Guinea pigs and rats digested the shredded wheat and ground wheat diets very well. Expressed in terms of dry matter, the digestibility coefficients ranged from 85-90%. The nutritive value of the two diets based on digestible energy varied from 83 to 89%. The guinea pigs digested the energy of the shredded wheat more efficiently than that of the ground wheat diet. The rats utilized the energy of the two diets almost equally. It is shown how to space series and shunt slots on a wave guide in order to obtain a beam emerging at angles 10° - 30° to the normal. Using matrix methods, the V.S.W.R. is shown to be less than 1.3. Formulae are developed for the calculation of the magnitude of the series and shunt elements, given the gabling on a power basis. Account is talc en of attenuation . The beta and gamma spectra of 6.9 day lutecium have been measured using a thin lens spectrometer. Gamma rays of average energies 112.2 ± 0.6 kev., 206.3 ±1.0 kev., and 317-3 ± 1.5 kev., have been found, the former two of comparable intensity and the latter much weaker. Characteristic X-radiation from Hf has also been observed. These energies are computed from four conversion lines on the beta spectrum at 46.9± 0.5 kev., 101.8±0.6 kev., 109.9 ±0.6 kev., and 141.4 ±0.8 kev., as well as from photoelectron lines using lead, gold, and tin radiators. The methods of overcoming the problem of high diagonal tension stresses in flat plate construction are: (1) to change the building dimensions or the concrete strength or both, (2) to use grillages, (3) to use a reinforcement system made from ordinary reinforcing bars. Efficiencies were calculated for the rectification of benzene-toluene in a square, plywood column containing eight copper plates, 11 inches by 11.5 inches. The plates supported three rectangular bubble caps. The column was run under total reflux conditions at superficial vapor velocities of less than 0.5 foot per second with various plate spacings. The effect of condensation and its relation to heat loss and plate efficiency are discussed. Design calculations for the column are given.  Read more

Although the action of acetylcholine (ACh) had been known to physiologists for many years, it was not until 1929 that Dale and Dudley(27) Isolated ACh from animal tissues for the first time. In 1936 Quastel, Tennenbaumand Wheatley(87) demonstrated the presence in brain cortex slices of an enzyme system which synthesizes ACh, and showed that the synthesis is closely associated with the aerobiobreakdown of glucose. This thesis is written to show that within the elastic limit of the material, the behavior of columns can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by means of the well-known Secant Formula or a combination of the Secant Formula and the Initial Curvature Formula. Nine aluminum alloy columns (Alcan 26S-T) in lengths ranging from 7’-0” to l’-6” have been tested with both central and eccentric loads, and measurements of stresses and deflections taken at intervals during the tests.
