1951 — The pathogenesis of lesions produced in rabbits by administration of foreign serum proteins.Abstract
Ever since it was demonstrated that pathological alterations of the hearts (l-13), arteries(2-18), and kidneys(14,19-22) can result from administration of foreign serum proteins in animals, interest in these lesions has resulted from their apparent resemblance to certain diseases in man whose cause is still unknown. The lesions of the heart have been likened by most investigators to the lesions occurring in the hearts of human cases of rheumatic fever(2,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,ll,12,21); the lesions of the arteries to the lesions occurring in human periarteritis nodosa(2-18,21) and those of the kidney to human glomerulonephritis(14,19-22). Whereas the opinion regarding the comparison of the lesions of … Read more

1951 — Solvent effects in cis-trans isomerization.Abstract
Of the factors that may govern the rate of a homogeneous chemical reaction in solution, probably the least understood is the part played by the solvent. The lack of a clear understanding of solvent effects on reaction rates can be readily appreciated when it is realized that kinetic interpretations in such systems involve merely as one element the difficulties generally inherent in the interpretation of any physico-chemical behaviour in the liquid state or in solutions. 1951 — The influence of choline on experimental arteriosclerosis.Abstract
Many substances have been used during the last three decades to influence the course of experimental arteriosclerosis. Amongst these choline and other lipotropic agents have occupied a prominent place. No uniform results have, however, been obtained in these researches, so that it was considered worthwhile to re-investigate the problem, employing the rabbit as experimental animal and choline, which is not only a potent lipotropic substance but also, because of its many physiological functions, a potentially important therapeutic agent. 1951 — Villon et Baudelaire, poètes de Paris.Abstract
[...] Read more

1951 — The twin method and its application to the study of genetic and environmental factors of some human diseases.Abstract
Until very recently it had been an age-old question and a favourite topic of debate to ask whether environment or heredity was responsible for some particular human trait. The implication of such a discussion was that the concepts of environment and heredity were mutually exclusive and if a trait was governed by one, the other could have but very little effect upon it. 1951 — The Reaction of 2-bromo-2-nitro-1, 3-indandione with pyridine.Abstract
The main object of this work was to investigate the reaction of 2-bromo-2-nitro-1, 3-indandione with pyridine in order to elucidate the chemica1 character of the former compound and of the bromine atom in particular. From the previous publications of other workers it is known that the bromine atom is very active in 2-bromo-2-nitro-1, 3-indandione; therefore two possibilities could be foreseen in the interaction of the above named substances: first, the formation of a pyridinium salt with bromine as an anion, and second, the action of 2-bromo-2-nitro-1, 3-indandione as a brominating and an oxidizing agent on pyridine. 1951 — Formation of Acetaldehyde and Alcohol in Frozen Peas and Their Relation to Off-flavour DevelopmentAbstract
It is well recognized that vegetables, such as peas, develop off-flavours during freezing storage if they have not been properly blanched previous to freezing. These off-flavours increase in intensity at least during the first year of storage at -17.8 degrees Celsius. They become noticeable first in unheated samples and then in order of increasing extent of heating. This would indicate that the compounds responsible are formed from some procurer existing in a rather concentrated liquid phase during freezing storage. Diehl, et al. (1936) reported undesirable flavour changes in raw peas as early as six weeks after storage at 120.6 degrees … Read more

1951 — Igneous dyke rocks of the Aillik-Makkovik area, Labrador.Abstract
No geological map has been published of the Aillik-Makkovik area, as previous work was not done in sufficient detail to make correlation possible with the rest of the North American Pre-Cambrain, or for that matter, between different sections of the Labrador coast. The correlation of rocks at different sections of the coast is particularly complicated by the imperfect knowledge of the relative age of the tectonic movements of the bedrock. [...] Read more

1951 — The Geology of the Nelson and adjoining part of Salmo map areas, British Columbia.Abstract
The "Rossland volcanic group" is subdivided into two volcanic formations, separated by a dominantly sedimentary formation of Jurassic age. These rocks were folded along north-south axes and subsequently faulted and bent into an arc around a protuberance of the Cretaceous(?) Nelson granodiorite batholith during or just prior to its intrusion. A quartz-diorite stock and tongues, partly sheared, antedate the batholithic stage. Metadiorite, a feldspar-hornblende gneiss with coarse pyroxene-hornblende border facies, was formed by assimilation or metasomatic reconstitution of chiefly volcanic rocks prior to the batholithic stage. Syenite intrudes it in places, in others a gradational contact shows evidence of metasomatic … Read more

1951 — The effect of humidity on the viability of the egg of the caecal worm of chickens.Abstract
Heterakis gallinae, the caecal worm of poultry, was described by Taylor (35) as "as perfect a parasite as can be found in that it does no harm to its host". In its normal host, Gallus gallus, the adult stages of the parasite are found in the lumen of the caeca. The larval stages may be found in the lumina and epithelium of the caecal glands as late as the seventh day following infection but usually no tissue invasion is present beyond the tenth day. The degree of typhlitis produced by the larval invasion is variable, depending on the degree of … Read more
