In 1868 Miescher (1), by digesting pus cells with pepsin-hydrochloric acid and then shaking with ether, isolated nuclei and prepared from them an unknown compound which he called "nuclein". The substance was acidic in nature, insoluble in dilute acid but readily soluble in dilute alkali, and contained a high proportion of phosphorus. This latter property was noteworthy, for at that time the only known organic compound of phosphorus in the tissues was lecithin. The discovery of radioactivity in 1896 was almost immediately followed by studies of the effects of high-energy radiation on materials. As early as 1899, the Curies reported the discoloring effect of radiation on glass, which was probably the first ‘experimental result’ in the radiation chemistry of high molecular substances. The galvanomagnetic properties of solids at low temperatures and high magnetic fields have been of interest since 1930, when the oscillatory dependence of the transverse magnetoresistance of Bismuth on the magnetic field was discovered by Schubnikow and de Haas (1). This thesis includes the test of a modified Jacob L-6MB 7-cylinder radial engine. In its original form the engine was not suitable for bench test measurements (the reason for this is explained in Chapter 5). Therefore, six cylinders out of the seven were disconnected and all of the tests and investigations were executed on the single-cylinder engine. The adult mammalian thyroid (122) is a bilobed, highly vascular, solid organ related to the pretracheal fascia which binds it to the larynx and trachea. Historically, the research scientist did not require a supporting organization for the pursuit of his scientific interests. There appears to have been a pattern followed by scientists until the early 18th century; many scientists were “gentlemen of leisure” and scientists by hobby. As well, the necessary equipment for scientific investigation in its rudimentary stages was inexpensive enough so that individuals could afford to purchase or construct their own. However the increasing complexity and cost of equipment and supplies used in scientific research has now made it practical and necessary for centralization and corporate ownership of research facilities.  Read more

The efforts towards the international unification of air law have been carried on since the Age of Aviation began. In 1911, the Comité Juridique International d'Aviation presented the first suggestion of a uniform law, the Code International de l'Air. International conferences and conventions have contributed to the partial unification of some rules in international air navigation. The geographical location of the Island of Montreal, where the St. Lawrence River meets the Ottawa, is perhaps the most significant factor contributing to Montreal’s commercial importance. Geology has assisted in making Montreal an entrepot between the Atlantic and the St. Lawrence - Great Lakes hinterland. The Sault St. Louis or Lachine Rapids, at the south-west corner of the island, are composed of extremely hard rock which resists the erosive character of the river. Besides the extractives, which in certain species of woods can be very considerable, the three main components of wood are cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Cellulose is a linear polymer consisting or B-D-glucopyranose residues linked together by (1 4) glycosidic bonds. In native celluloses, no less than 5,000 such residues are probably present in an average cellulose macromolecule, corresponding to a weight-average degree of polymerization of 10,000 if the ratio between number and weight-average values is assumed to be the usual 1:2.  Read more

Rock Mechanics, as such, is a comparatively young science. It has gradually evolved from minor branches of activity in Engineering, Physics, and Geology. Today it may be considered as being a separate field of scientific endeavour. The earliest investigations into the behaviour of rocks under pressure were described over a hundred and fifty years ago. The resonant frequency of the Cl35 Nuclear Quadrupole in KCLO3 has been measured as a function of temperature in the range 16.5°K to 273.2°K. Comparison has been made with Bayer’s theory based on lattice vibrations, and agreement is excellent below 80°K. It has been found that the result obtained by Kushida, using an equation of state of the solid, is not exact. The possibility of using this temperature dependence as the basis of a sensitive thermometer also has been studied.  Read more

It has long been known that laboratory tissue preparations from excised brain are capable of carrying out a vast number of metabolic processes when incubated in suitable media. Whether this in vitro metabolism represents a true picture of the metabolism of the tissue in situ is indeed a debatable point. In the past, close parallelism of in vivo and in vitro work has been the rule rather than the exception, although some definite discrepancies have occurred.  Read more

The laws of physics have played an increasingly important role in the understanding of the aero and hemodynamics of the cardio-respiratory system over the past 15 years. The use of electronic techniques have furthered the translation of physical phenomena into physiological behaviour. Numerous tests of pulmonary function have been refined in this manner so that they now become routine procedures in many diagnostic laboratories. However, the use of various systems in which different physiological variables are monitored to test identical "function" of lung has occasionally resulted in divergent results.  Read more

This thesis describes an S-Band parametric amplifier which was designed and subsequently built to study this type of amplifier at microwave frequencies. The signal, idling and pump were at the frequencies 2975, 7000, and 9975 megacycles respectively. The amplifier worked satisfactorily giving stable gains as high as 20 db. The bandwidth was, however, very low. Some theoretical investigations were performed on such topics as the stability and optimum load of the amplifier, and the negative conductance of parametric diodes. The use of organic pesticides* on fruit and vegetable crops is widespread. Residues of the pesticides are frequently present when the fruits and vegetables are marketed as foods. Since many pesticides are toxic to humans, it is necessary to have methods for the detection and measurement of pesticide residues on foods. Analytical procedures for the determination of pesticide residues ordinarily involve the following steps: (a) extraction of the pesticide with a suitable solvent; (b) purification of the extract; and (c) the performance of qualitative and quantitative analyses for the pesticides.  Read more

The Natashquan river is one of several rivers flowing to the Gulf of St. Lawrence from Labrador-Ungava, which have deposited large quantities of sediment at their mouths since the end of the last glacial period. The Natashquan deposit is composed largely of coarse and medium grained sand. Downwarping of the North Shore, resulting from the weight of ice during the Pleistocene, was followed by emergence during and after the deglaciation. The outstanding feature of the diplomacy of western Europe, at the end of the thirteenth, and throughout the fourteenth century, was the conflict between France and England. This conflict revolved about the English possessions in France. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, these had been very extensive comprising Normandy, Maine, Anjou, Poitou, Saintonge and Aquitaine. The study to be reported, was undertaken to obtain further knowledge into the skin temperature changes which occur following burns and frostbite. This was stimulated by the availability of a new device for the assessment of skin temperatures. This device, the Thermoscan Model 102, was developed by the Radiation Electronics Company, a Division of Comptometer Corporation of Chicago. The Thermoscan has been used successfully by Dr. R. N. Lawson for the assessment of the temperature changes in human breasts. (94), (95). The behaviour of frozen soil under loading conditions has been studied in terms of fundamental factors contributing to the strength of the soil. Electro-chemical theories based upon forces of interaction between charged particles have been applied by considering fine-grained soils as platelets with unbalanced charges. It has been shown that the quantity of water remaining unfrozen in a soil-water system is directly related to the surface potential and the potential halfway between two adjacent charged plates. Unfrozen water content is dependent on the original water content, temperature, clay content, charge density, and electrolytic concentration.  Read more

The world of Soviet law differs so much from the world of Western lawyers that anyone attempting to write on the communist legal system without an explanatory introduction would run the decided risk of being misunderstood.
