1971 — A study of intestinal motility: (with comments on post-operative paralytic ileus)Abstract
The peristaltic reflex is regulated by complex nervous and hormonal mechanisms. It can be elicited in vitro by stimulation of the intestinal mucosa, but the functional relationships between the mucosa and the motor activity of the intestine are virtually unknown. Such a relationship is suggested by the frequent association of paralytic ileus with the stress ulcer syndrome. This problem was investigated in vivo in the awake dog. Elective stimulation of the mucosal peristaltic reflex was attempted by instillation of 0.1 N HCl into the intestine. Such a stimulation was followed by a reproducible motor response. Read more

1971 — Studies on the metabolism of corticosteroids C-21 yl sulfates with particular reference to cortisol sulfate.Abstract
Investigations on biogenesis and metabolism of 17-hydroxy and 17-deoxysteroids of the pragn-4-ene C-21 yl sulfate series showed that (a) such conjugates are little if at aIl hydrolyzed by placental sulfatase and are poor substrates with respect to placental 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase compared to the corresponding steroid alcohols; (b) following injection to adult subjects, cortisol sulfate is in part metabolized to ll-oxo and 11beta-hydroxy etiocholanolone glucuronides, but not to C-2l steroid glucuronides of the pregn-5-ene series; its rate of secretion represents only a fraction of that of cortisol; (c) when H-cortisol and C-cortisol sulfate or H-corticosterone and C-corticosterone sulfate are injected to … Read more

1971 — Kinematics of deformation of inhomogeneous solidsAbstract
The aim of the present work is to study the deformation of polycrystalline materials when subjected to a general force field using the classical field and probability theories. Fundamental relations related to the proposed theory of deformation will be treated first. Two basic assumptions are made, e.g. that the medium is composed of a finite number of grains or crystals which are randomly distributed in the configuration space, and that each grain can be treated as a finite continuum obeying the laws of the classical field theory. Continuum field theories and some essential points of statistical and probabilistic mechanics are … Read more

1971 — The background of romanticism : secularism in Europe, 1789-1815.Abstract
The following pages represent an attempt at what I might call, with some hesitation, 'applied theology'. In them I endeavour to describe the development during a specific period of European history, of a phenomenon which has been, especially in the last fifteen years or so, a topic of intense theological discussion. That phenomenon is secularism. Now, the concept 'secularism', as it is understood nowadays, played no part in the theological discussions of the years we shall consider. The closest term was 'atheism', which we, from our perspective, in consideration of the secular theism of the French Revolution, for example, can … Read more

1971 — Studies on a mammalian deoxythymidine kinase: purification, properties and kinetics.Abstract
Deoxythymidine kinase has been purified about 300- fold from calf thymus. Among various nucleosides tested, only dTR and to a much lesser extent, dUR and its 5-halogenated derivatives could serve as phosphate acceptors. All kinds of ribo- and deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates, except for dTTP, were found to be active as phosphate donors, ATP being the most effective. Calf thymus dTR kinase is inhibited specifically by deoxynucleotide derivatives of thymine; the potency of inhibition being in the order of dTTP > dTDP > dTMP. The molecular weight of dTR kinase was found to be approximately 55,000, as determined by gel filtration. Evidence … Read more

1971 — Current Concepts in OcclusionAbstract
Centric relation, centric occlusion, power eccentric, ccentric occlusion, acquired occlusion, habitual occlusion, maximum intercuspation, rest position, intercuspal position, retruded position; - these are just some of the many terms that have been used in attempting to describe dental occlusion. This multitude of terms, and the many different eanings that have been applied to the same terms, is indicative of the confusion that has existed, and still exists today in our understanding of occlusion.[...] Read more

1971 — The effects of experimental airway obstruction on the distribution of ventilationAbstract
We studied various indices of ventilation distribution before and after airway occlusion (AO) was produced by insufflation of beads into bronchi of excised dog lobes. AO delayed multiple breath N2 washouts and markedly increased the slope of the alveolar plateau of the single breath N2 curves. To detect diffusion gradients, the HE/SF6 ratio was measured during expiration following a single breath of these gases. Before AO we found small gradients. However, after AO, we consistently found the initial gas HE rich and later samples SF6 rich. Absolute concentrations of both gases fell during expiration. Breathholding reversed both effects. Gas sampled … Read more

1971 — Lung cancer among the Jewish and non-Jewish of Montreal, Quebec, 1956-1966: mortality rates, and cigarette smoking behaviourAbstract
The study attempts to describe and account for the overall lung cancer mortality pattern, by ethnic group and religion, of the City of Montreal from 1956 to 1966. Lung cancer mortality appeared high for Jewish females relative to her non-Jewish equals and low for Jewish males compared with non-Jewish males. The Jewish male and female lung cancer cases had lower proportions of “epidermoid or anaplastic” cell types comprising their total pathologies, higher proportions of nonsmokers, and they consumed fewer cigarettes, on the average, than did their non-Jewish counterparts.
