The purpose of this study was to assess the possible relationship between attitudes held by fathers and sons toward physical education and to determine the relationship between the two sets of measured attitudes with the physical performance of sons. Subjects involved in the study comprised the total grade VIII population of one high school and their fathers. Data were obtained through the use of a battery of physical fitness-performance tests selected from the CANADIAN ASSOCIATION FOR HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION MANUAL and the WEAR PHYSICAL EDUCATION ATTITUDE INVENTORY (Short Form). A method for measuring the rate of production of C-labelled 14 adenine nucleotides from C-ATP was developed and used to study the relationship of adenyl cyclase to other membrane-bound ATP utilizing enzymes and cyclic 3', 5'-nucleotide phosphodiesterase (PDE) in preparations of rat cerebral cortex and guinea-pig pancreas. It was shown that NaF and Mn++ increased cyclic AMP accumulation in these preparations, in part, by an inhibition of PDE activity. Adrenaline and ouabain stimulated cyclic AMP accumulation by a method not related to inhibition of other membrane-bound ATP utilizing enzymes or to inhibition of PDE activity. A theoretical and experimental study on acoustic, optical and acoustooptic diffraction in anisotropic crystals is presented. It is shown that even though optical activity in quartz introduces only very small changes in the optical wave vector loci, its effects on acoustooptic diffraction geometry are nevertheless easily measurable. A calculation procedure for the diffraction angles incorporating optical activity is described and then experimentally verified. Topez, an optically biaxial crystal, is used to demonstrate the effects on shear-wave acoustooptic diffraction geometry of acoustic propagation along other thon symmetry axes and of interaction in nonsymmetry planes. Rat liver slices system was chosen as a simple model to study the effects of incubation media containing different serum lipoprotein fractions on the release of labelled lipid and protein moieties of lipoproteins. The results obtained indicated the involvement of three different mechanisms in the release of labelled lipoprotein-bound phospholipids: 1: release of de nova synthesized lipoproteins. 2: exchange of liver phospholipids with circulating lipoproteins. 3: acceptance of phospholipids by a protein of d>1.21 with the resultant decrease in its density. Deoxyadenosine (dAR) kinase, purified about 140 fold from calf thymus, was shown to catalyze the transfer of a phosphate group from specific nucleoside 5'-triphosphate donors to the 5' position of dAR. A purification procedure involving fractionation by streptomycin, protamine sulfate, Sephadex G-150 and DEAE-cellulose was employed. The enzyme required a divalent cation and a phosphate donor for activity. The presence of mercuric ions inhibited the enzyme. The molecular weight of dAR kinase was determined by gel filtration to be about 63,000. Uridine kinase was purified 20-fold from Ehrlich ascites cells and shown to catalyze the phosphorylation of both uridine and cytidine. A number of physical and chemical properties were studied at various stages of the purification. Two catalytically active fractions were obtained during Sepharose 6B chromatography and their molecular weights, as determined by gel filtration, were approximately 120,000 and 30,000. The larger molecular weight species (Peak 1) was far more susceptible to heat inactivation and slightly less sensitive to CTP inhibition thon the Peak 2 fraction. The metabolism of phosphatides in the rabbit lung was studied in vivo and in vitro using slices, whole and fractionated homogenates. The FA profile of PC studied by phosphalipase A2 and GLC revealed that DPC is the predominant lecithin species. Neither glucose nor glycerol is incorporated well enough into lung lipids to account for the high rate of incorporation of palmitate, however, glucose is incorporated to a greater extent. During incorporation of palmitate in the absence of added FA acceptors lipid ester bonds and phosphorus levels remained relatively constant.
