1972 — The reign of the Caliph al-Wathig (842-847 A.D.) according to al-Tabari’s history: an annotated translationAbstract
This thesis concerns the Reign of al-Wathiq, the ninth ‘Abbasid caliph (227-232/842-847), a time considered the seal of the Golden Period of the ‘Abbasid Caliphate. The thesis comprises a translation into English of the account of al-Tabarï on the reign of al-Wâthiq which has not previously been translated into any other language. The Annotations give an explanation of the important events, terms and personalities mentioned in the text, and correct some information related to certain events. The Introduction gives portraits of al-Wâthiq as viewed by other historians; the Conclusion gives a brief comment on and evaluation of the caliph in … Read more

1972 — Radiocalcium and radiostrontium update in bones of rats with relation to effect of vitamin D action and inositol synergismAbstract
The objectives of these studies were to investigate the effect of inositol on 45Ca absorption by bone of rats in comparison with 89Sr; and whether there has been evidence that it could play a part in reversing the loss of calcium-proteinate in osteoporotic bones of rats previously given corticosteroids, as a model of the human disorder, both idiopathic or following drug treatment. The relationship of inositol was the prime concern, as a primary objective, but was enlarged to study the interrelationships between several hormones and inositol in terms of bone calcium content. 1972 — Action of Human Chorionic Gonadothrophin on Steriod synthesis in placental and adrenal tissuesAbstract
The action of RCG on pathways of steroid biosynthesis was studied 'in vitro' using different tissues. In placental minces, testostercne aromatization to estrone and estradiol was increased by NADP, further enhanced by the simultaneous addition of HCG and/or cyclic 3 ; ,5, -AMP, but not to the same extent as following addition of G-6-p. The effect of HCG required intact cells and was only observed after a lag period of one to two hours. In the absence of NADP, HCG and cyclic 3 ,I ,5I -AMP inhibited aromatization. In adrenal tissues from either newborn infants or adult rats, HCG inhibited … Read more

1972 — Launching efficiency of the HE11 surface wave mode on a dielectric tubeAbstract
A theoretical investigation into the launching of dipolar surface waves on a dielectric tube is presented. The source under consideration is a transversely oriented point electric dipole situated on the axis of the tube. It is found to excite only the dominant HE11 mode. Phase and group characteristics as well as some field distributions are given for the source -free case; however, these are independent of the choice of the source, and are dependent only on the particular mode being excited. Surface-wave as well as radiated powers are obtained in terms of the current in the source dipole, and the … Read more

1972 — Iatrogenic factors in periodontal disease.Abstract
"Primum non nocere has been the cardinal rule in medicine, including dental medicine, since Hippocrates. In order to follow this simple humanitarian rule, it is necessary to have a deep knowledge of the changes of iatrogenic nature. An eighteenth century German theory was to give the patients some more of the poison that was believed to cause their disease. Such treatment was, at best, an experiment in the survival of the fittest. However, the idea behind it may coincide with the idea of modern vaccines. Also, .American medical history has its notorious stories of diseases of iatrogenic nature. Blood letting … Read more

1972 — Purification and properties of bovine lenticular proteins. Partial characterization of a soluble protein fraction of intermediate molecular weightAbstract
Bovine soluble lens protein was fractionated by a variety of Chromatographic procedures. Bio-Gel A-1.5 M gave a reproducible elution profile consisting of 5 fractions, designated l -> V. The physicochemical properties and degree of heterogeneity of the fractions were studied in dissociating and/or non dissociating solvents by the following methods: ion-exchange chromatography on DEAE-cellulose, sedimentation velocity, high-speed meniscus depletion sedimentation equilibrium, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, immuno-diffusion, determination of spectral quantities, amino acid analysis and sulfhydryl group estimation. Comparison of the data with the literature suggestion that Fractions I, II and III, IV, and V were a-, β-, βs- and γ-crystallin respectively. … Read more

1972 — The organ sources(s) of the cells mediating a cellular immune reaction in vitro.Abstract
The objective of this investigation was to establish an in vitro counterpart to the in vivo graft-versus-host reaction. The generation in vitro of plaque-forming cells from spleen of rabbits previously immunized with sheep red blood cells could he completely suppressed by the simultaneous incubation of the memory cells with allogeneic circulating lymphocytes, sacculus rotundus, appendix or Peyer's patches cells (collectively referred to as SAPP effector cells). Spleen and lymph node cells were less effective in inhibiting the in vitro immune response whereas thymus and bone marrow exhibited no inhibitory activity. It was demonstrated that the inhibition of the generation of … Read more

1972 — Automatic detection methods for psychophysiological dataAbstract
"Data were collected from psychophysiological experiments in which subjects were asked to verbalize the emotions of joy and anger while two physiological signals, cardiac interbeat interval and galvanic skin response, were simultaneously recorded. The first objective of the subsequent analysis was to find whether a test could be devised to decide automatically, on the basis of intra-subject ~ priori records, which of the two putative emotions had been verbalized. First, detection methods were applied to the cardiac interval data based on the Bayes maximum likelihood criterion, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov two-sample test, and a mean absolute deviation test. The "best" method, as … Read more

1972 — Measurement of the levels of diphenylhydration and phenobarbital in patients with epilepsyAbstract
Approximately one-half of one percent of the total population suffers from epilepsy, a neurological disorder characterized by the paroxysmal occurrence of seizures. "An epileptic seizure is a state produced by an abnormal excessive neuronal discharge within the central nervous system." (Penfield and Jasper, 1954) Two drugs very widely used for the medical management of "the epilepsies" are phenobarbital and diphenylhydantoin (5, 5-diphenylhydantoin, phenytoin). These pharmaceutical agents are the prime concern of this thesis. Read more

1972 — Electron microscopic study of the secretory activity of the normal and hyperactive parathyroid gland of the ratAbstract
Fine structure of normal and activated rat parathyroids was studied using routine and glycoprotein staining. The chief cells of the gland contained organelles concerned with the formation of secretory material, that is rER and Golgi apparatus. In routine staining, the Golgi apparatus consisted primarily of flattened saccules and connecting profiles. The prosecretory and secretory granules associated with the connecting profiles contained a dense central core surrounded by a clear halo. With glycoprotein staining the Golgi saccules showed a gradual transition from the unstained forming face to the moderately stained mature face. In this region the connecting profiles outlined a network … Read more
