1972 — Dental health programmes for school childrenAbstract
The two most crippling diseases of the mouth are periodontal disease an d dental caries (10) . Focusing on the severity of the problem , the 1966 Feder al Census figures , reported by the Canadian Dental Association _ (7), show that 60.73 per cent of the five-year-olds in Canada have dental caries and 31.61 percent have poor oral hygiene habits indicative of future periodontal disease if permitted to continue . These percent ages increase as the children grow older , and in Quebec treatment needs are about twice as great as those reported for the American population (47) .[...] Read more

1972 — The gastric mucosal barrier.Abstract
Bidirectional chloride and sodium ion fluxes, and net hydrogen ion fluxes were measured across segments of gastric oxyntic gland mucosa with intact blood supply, in anaesthetized dogs. Bidirectional chloride ion fluxes increased with increasing luminal sodium chloride or hydrochloric acid concentration. Chloride insorption was the same from equal concentrations of either sodium chloride or hydrochloric acid. Sodium ion was insorbed from sodium chloride solutions, but not from hydrochloric acid solutions. Sodium ion exsorption was independent of luminal electrolyte concentration. Stimulation of gastric acid secretion with histamine or bethanechol, resulted in a decreased chloride insorption. Treatment of the mucosa with two molar … Read more

1972 — A quantitative analysis of the effect of body temperature on tidal volume and respiratory frequency in anesthetized catsAbstract
In 8 anesthetized, tracheotomized cats, at different body temperatures (range: 36 to 40°C), we have studied the immediate effect of added inspiratory elastic loads on tidal volume and respiratory frequency. At any given temperature, the addition of elastic loads resulted in a decrease in both tidal volume (VT) and respiratory frequency (f), the relationship between VT and f being given by: VT = m (f – fo), where m is a constant reflecting the vagal (lung volume-dependent) contribution to frequency, and fo ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬is the non-vagal (bulbo-pontine pacemaker) component. Indeed, following vagotomy, f was the same as the intercept fo determined … Read more

1972 — The immunosuppressive effect of the graft-versus-host reaction in miceAbstract
The graft-verus-host (GVH) reaction suppresses both cellular and humoral immune responses and is often lethal. Studies were performed to determine whether the GVH reaction itself could be altered by various cell treatments. GVH reactions were induced in adult CBA X A F1 mice by the injection of various doses of parental (A strain) lymphoid cells. Later the GVH animals received either an A strain thymus graft (PTG), CAF1 thymus graft (FITG) CAF1 bone marrow cells (SM)) CAF1 spleen graft (SG), F1TG and SM) F1TG and SG) or sham thymus graft (ST). At the higher cell doses it was found that … Read more

1972 — The relationship between cell-mediated and humoral immunity in the normal adult rabbit.Abstract
Normal outbred rabbits responded to antigenic stimulation with antibody formation through activation of either a two cell (antigen-reactive cell and antibody-forming cell) or one cell (antibody-forming cell) pathway system. Similarly multiple pathway systems were observed to be operative in the induction of cell-mediated immunity. This latter conclusion is based on the fin ding that lymphoid cells of a sensitized rabbit lost the capacity to transfer the delayed hypersensitivity skin reactivity to a normal recipient or to be inhibited in their migration in vitro by the specific antigen although the cell donors were still capable of giving optimal delayed hypersensitivity skin … Read more

1972 — Calcium and phosphate homeostasis after the discovery of calcitonin investigation into the action of calcitonin on the kidneyAbstract
The cellular control of calcium and phosphate is still confusing and controversial. The reviewer has tried to put useful hypotheses and existing knowledge into a more or less unified theory like all theories based on rational hypothesis this review may usefully serve in making predictions that could be experimentally tested. Calcitonin lowers the plasma calcium and phosphate, while parathormone lowers the plasma phosphate and increases the plasma calcium. However, it appears that calcitonin does not act as a competitive antagonist of parathormone but acts on a different cellular pathway. The action of calcitonin on the kidney is the subject of … Read more

1972 — Implication of cyclic AMP in the physiopathology of labile high blood pressure.Abstract
The etiology and the physiopathological mechanism of essential hypertension is, in 1972, still unknown. Many groups of workers, particularly that of Genest, Küche1, Nowaczynski and Boucher, have contributed to a better insight of humoral disturbances in this entity by their studies on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, mineralocorticoids, progesterone, catecholamines, and other parameters. 1972 — Pakistan: Pre-Partition Theories on Her Political Form.Abstract
This study attempts to (1) determine the validity of the claim that Pakistan was demanded and achieved on the basis of Islamic Ideology, and (2) assess the pre-partition views of the Muslim leaders concerning the polity of Pakistan. The first chapter is a brief survey of the historical background from 1857-1930 demonstrating the forces effecting Islamic conciousness and separatism. Chapter two analyzes Muhammad Iqbal' s religio-political thought as it emphasized Islamic Ideology and motivated religious modernisme. The balance of the study indicates the increase in the Muslim ambition for religio-political autonomy. The Islamic ideal is further magnified. With the advent … Read more

1972 — Glomerular filtration rate measurement; a new cumulative integral methodAbstract
A reliable method of assessing glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is useful in measuring the degree of impairment of kidney function resulting from renal disease. The standard technique is the constant infusion method utilizing inulin as described by Shannon and Smith (33) in 1935. The GFR is calculated using the derivative formulation based on the equation of Van Slyke (32) modified for use with inulin, GFR = urine inulin concentration x urine volume / plasma inulin concentration x time, for each short urine collection period of 20-30 minutes. The physiological basis and inherent weaknesses of this test are described. Read more

1972 — The transition from thermal to thermally activated flow in a-zirconiumAbstract
The mechanical behaviour of polycrystal line a-zi rconium was studied by means of compression testing obetween 375 and 625 C. The sampJes were prepared from sponge zi rconium and were strain annealed prior to testing so as to produce a coarse recrystal lized grain structure. Decade intervals of strain rate were covered from 10-1 s-I to 10-5 s-1 In the low temperature part of the range, the yield stress was observed to be nearly independent of strain rate, and to depend on temperature only through Young's modulus. This behaviour is discussed and compared with the predictions of current theories. By … Read more

1972 — Quantitative study of the spermatogonial stem cell population of the ratAbstract
The spermatogonial stem cell population of adult rats was analyzed quantitatively in whole mounts of seminiferous tubules and in radioautographed sections of testes collected at various time intervals after injections of 3H-thymidine. Various classes of type A spermatogonia were identified on the basis of their nuclear morphology and topographical distribution along the tubular basement membrane. The data suggested that the isolated type A spermatogonia were generally non-proliferative and were possibly equivalent to the "reserve stem cells" postulated by Clermont and Bustos-Obregon (1968). Paired type A spermatogonia also appeared to belong to this class of cells. Type A1 spermatogonia, which formed … Read more
