1973 — Distribution of blood flow in the myocardiumAbstract
Hemorrhagic necrosis involving the inner third of the left ventricle is seen in 50% of deaths post-cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). It occurs almost exclusively in hypertrophied ventricles which fibrillate during CPB. The normal distribution of blood flow is epicardial (EPI) in systole and endocardial (ENDO) in diastole. The net result is an EPI/ENDO ratio of 0.8 (0.5 - 1.1). We propose that any imbalance between the driving forces and resistance in the heart may lead to a redistribution of blood flow which may jeopardize the viability of the endocardium. Read more

1973 — Growth of vesicular stomatitis virus in mosquito cell lines.Abstract
Cocal strain of vesicular stomatitis virus was propagated in Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti cell lines. Infection of the cell lines at 30°C resulted in a low titered virus infection involving only a small proportion of the cell population with no cytopathic effects. Virus titers in A. albopictus were increased by adsorption with DEAE dextran or by increasing temperature of incubation. Use of a high input multiplicity and incubation of cells at 37°C resulted in 100% infection of cell cultures allowing a limited electron microscopic study of virus development. Persistent infection was established in both mosquito cell lines and maintained … Read more

1973 — Piece for four track tape recorder Canada unlimited number twoAbstract
This paper is submitted as an accompaniment to my thesis presentation of April 25, 1973 at McGill University, Montreal. A tape recording of the concert, along with this paper will be deposited in the McGill University Archives. Herewithin are notes relating to l} production, 2} performance conditions, 3} a general description of the tape part of the work, and 4) the participation of the group METAMUSIC, in my piece, Piece for Four Track Tape Recorder Canada Unlimited Number Two -subtitled Sam McGee, abbreviated as PFFTTRCUNTsSMc. Preceding the body of the paper are 1) a table of abbreviations and 2} explanation … Read more

1973 — Permanent technological unemployment reconsideredAbstract
This thesis consists primarily of a critical review of recent literature on the subject of the employment effects of technological change. The analysis of this literature is derived from a 1942 article by Hans P. Neisser, directed against the orthodox denials of the possibility that technological progress could cause "permanent" or unreabsorbed displacement of labour. Arguments classified under one of the Say's Law, neoclassical, or wage fund schools are examined using the Neisser framework. As a secondary aspect, some elaboration is undertaken of the process by which uncompensated technological unemployment could arise. The main conclusion made is that, in agreement … Read more

1973 — Physicochemical and immunochemical studies of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and its tumour-specific determinant group.Abstract
In order to determine the structure of the tumour specific immunodominant groups of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) of human gastrointestinal tumours, immunologically active fragments were prepared by partial acid hydrolysis using non-dialyzable polystyrene sulphonic acid and by enzymatic hydrolysis using the proteolytic enzyme nagase. The immunologic activity of the fragments was tested using the Z-gel radioimmunoassay technique for CEA. With the use of these two methods of hydrolysis for CEA, followed by subsequent purification of the hydrolysates, it was found that various polymeric arrangements of N-acetyl glucosamine are important immunological constituents of CEA. Furthermore, evidence is presented which suggests that … Read more

1973 — Effects of infra-articular steroids on joint cartilageAbstract
Joint destruction after intra-articular glucocorticoids was investigated applying histological, biochemical and tracer methods. Adult rabbit knees received 2 – 12 weekly injections of hydrocortisone acetate and were sacrificed thereafter. Fissures and cysts occurred in the midzone of weight bearing joint areas. Their number increased with the amount of hydrocortisone given. A linear decrease of hexosamine to less than 50 percent after 12 injections was accompanied by a marginal change in DNA find hydroxyproline content. The synthesis of proteoglycans and proteins was reduced to one third, while the production of collagen dropped to less than 20 percent. The changes in thymidine … Read more

1973 — DNA synthesis in isolated nuclei from Hela cells.Abstract
Read more
