1973 — The influence of phonatory transitions on stutteringAbstract
The influence of phonatory transitions on stuttering was examined in a group of 14 young adult stutterers. Subjects performed five oral readings of two passages, one containing all-voiced sounds, and the other both voiced and voiceless sounds. Results showed, in contrast to a previous study by Adams and Reis (1971), that more stuttering was associated with the all-voiced passage and that rate of adaptation was similar for both passages. Adams and Reis's method of comparing passages appeared to be misleading, since a strong context effect was found in the present study or frequency of stuttering on voiced to voiced transitions, … Read more

1973 — Copper distribution in rat liver cytosol.Abstract
The distribution of copper among the proteins of rat-liver cytosol was studied with Sephadex G-75. Analysis of the Sephadex profiles showed that copper is distributed differently within the cytosol of normal rats and those whose copper levels have been increased by intraperitoneal injection of copper. Distribution of copper in cytosol of neonatal rats is similar to that for copper-loaded, adult rats. The uptake of copper into the cytosol is an ordered process which cannot be reproduced in vitro. In normal cytosol the major portion of the copper co-chromatographs with proteins of 40,000 daltons. After rats have received injections of copper … Read more

1973 — Some aspects of a floc barrier module for turbidity removalAbstract
Turbidity is one of the typical characteristics of surface water sources, and may be caused by inorganic and organic matter in coarse, fine and colloidal suspensions. While it may not be dangerous to health, turbidity is objected to from the standpoint of appearance. The coarser matter is kept in suspension by flow velocity of surface waters, and this type of turbidity is easily removed by reducing the flow velocities and thus removing the particles by gravity subsidence. Colloidal particles, however, cannot be conveniently removed in this manner, and represent the true cause of the milky and opaque appearance of raw … Read more

1973 — The phenomenology of Adolf Reinach : chapters in the theory of knowledge and legal philosophy.Abstract
Read more

1973 — A biomechanical analysis of the posture of muscular dystrophy. The compensatory role of lordosis and equinus.Abstract
This study reports on a biomechanical analysis of the vertical standing posture of normal human subjects and muscular dystrophy patients. The compensatory roles of lordosis and equinus in stabilizing the knee joint were studied using a force plate, cinephotographic and electromyographic methods. The results indicate that both lordosis and equinus stabilize the knee in extension. These compensatory mechanisms are progressively negated by progressive knee flexion contractures, resulting in inability to stand when the quadriceps muscles are severely weakened. An explanation is offered for the significant clinical observations of lordosis which disappears with knee bracing, requirement for knee bracing following heel … Read more

1973 — Vascular sensitivity of sympathomimetic aminesAbstract
Six sympathomimetic amines were used to investigate the postulation that the neuronal uptake process determines the sensitivity of the isolated perfused rabbit central ear artery to extra- and intraluminally applied noradrenaline and related amines. The artery was found to be more sensitive to intra- than to extraluminal noradrenaline, but the reverse was true for metaraminol, methoxamine, metanephrine, and isoproterenol. No difference was noted between the sensitivity of the artery to intra- and extraluminal phenylephrine. Drugs and procedures which impair the neuronal uptake process appeared to diminish the difference between the sensitivity of the artery to extra- and intraluminal noradrenaline, but … Read more

1973 — Origin and renewal of the four types of epithelial cells in the mouse small intestine.Abstract
The electron microscope, with or without radioautography, was used to examine the life history of the four cell types of the epithelium of the small intestine: columnar, mucous, argentaffin and Paneth cells. All four are derived from epithelial cells which are rich in free ribosomes and therefore, considered to be immature; they are situated next to Paneth cells at the base of the crypts. Young stages of each cell type are similar to the immature epithelial cells. This resemblance is gradually lost with age as the cells migrated away from the crypt base. Columnar and mucous cells behave in a … Read more
