1973 — A new lipolytic-melanotropic peptide from human pituitary.Abstract
Read more

1973 — Emergency revascularization of the acute myocardial infarction effect on ventricular function and myocardial contractilityAbstract
The mortality and morbidity of the acute myocardial infarction treated conservatively is unacceptably high. The possibility of restoring flow to the ischemic area as soon as possible after occlusion by means of aortocoronary bypass surgery has been suggested. The theoretical basis for such a procedure rests on the histologically demonstrated zone of reversible ischemia persisting around an infarct after permanent necrosis has occurred in the center. This study was designed to investigate the functional significance of this peripheral zone of temporary ischemia and to define the critical time within which blood flow would have to be restored. Ventricular function, myocardial … Read more

1973 — Metabolism of pregnenolone and its sulphate in normotensive control subject and patients with benign essential hypertension.Abstract
The urinary excretion of total etiocholanolone and four delta5-3beta-hydroxysteroids viz, pregnenediol, 17alpha-hydroxy-pregnenolone, pregnenetriol and dehydroepiandrosterone isolated from the glucuronide and sulphate fractions by sequential hydrolysis, have been compared between normotensive controls and hypertensive subjects. Normotensive subjects excreted significantly more etiocholanolone, pregnenetriol and dehydroepiandrosterone sulphates while no difference was observed in the rest of the steroids. Upon the intravenous injection of pregnenolone-14C and pregnenolone-3H-sulphate, hypertensives excreted in their urine more l4C and less 3H radioactivity than. normotensives. The urinary production rates of pregnenolone and pregnenolone sulphate calculated from pregnenediol-14C-glucuronide and pregnenediol- 3H-sulphate respectively were both higher in hypertensives but only the … Read more

1973 — The ribonuclease activities of two single-strand specific nucleases from Neurospora crassa.Abstract
N. crassa exonuclease and endonuclease degraded denatured reovirus RNA rapidly but did not release acid-soluble material from native viral RNA. The exonuclease was optimally active with rRNA at pH 8.3 in 10^-3 M MgCl2; the endonuclease was optimally active at pH 8.5 in the absence of MgCl2. The relative rates of degradation of poly rU, poly rI, poly rA and poly rC were 100:94:57:30 for the exonuclease and 100:163:54:15 for the endonuclease, respectively. The mononucleotide fraction from an early exonuclease digest of rRNA was 62% UMP, 20% GMP, 9% AMP and 9% CMP. The 5'-phosphoryl ends of the products of … Read more

1973 — Théorie et critique littéraires dans la revue Présence africaineAbstract
Founded in 1947, the review Présence Africaine has been at the cross-roads of the social, political, and cultural revolution of the Black world; it was instrumental in the coming of a literature. In this thesis, we have attempted to show the main avenues followed by literary criticism in Présence Africaine. In keeping with the unity of the review, we have placed the different problems, in the chronological order, as they were posed by the Africans. From its beginnings up to the sixties, Présence Africaine has been particularly active in defining literature in relation to the colonial situation of Africa. A … Read more

1973 — An application of programmed instruction to the learning of selected badminton skillsAbstract
The purpose of the study was to develop an illustrated linear programmed text of badminton skills for grade nine girls and to evaluate whether this programme was more or less effective than the conventional teacher-directed method. The subjects were enrolled in the Mount Royal High School. One grade nine class of twenty subjects used the programmed text while another grade nine class of twenty-three followed traditional teacher-directed method. Both classes were pre-tested using two tests of badminton skills, the Miller Wall Volley and the Short Serve Tests. At the conclusion of fourteen instructional periods the two tests were repeated. Independent … Read more

1973 — Cellular differentiation events during humoral antibody formation in the mouse - a kinetic approach.Abstract
The present investigation has attempted to examine the cellular differentiation events which occur within T and B lymphocyte cell lines during the course of antigen-induced humoral antibody formation in the mouse. The data have supported the conclusion that the T cell line acts throughout all stages of the primary and secondary humoral antibody response to quantitatively but not qualitatively amplify the production of antibody by members of the B cell line. This amplification was demonstrated whether sheep erythrocytes or brucellin was employed as the immunizing stimulus. The data have also supported the hypothesis that the sequential production of humoral antibody … Read more

1973 — The pathogenesis of spina bifida and dysraphism: clues from diastematomyeliaAbstract
A review of the clinical and pathological findings in 30 patients with diastematomyelia further defines the distinct pathological anatomy of diastematomyelia and further elucidates its association with a variety of other midline dysraphic anomalies. These definitions allow the formulation of an integrative, universal hypothesis on the origin of virtually all forms of spina bifida and dysraphism and cranium bifidum. The essence of the hypothesis is the formation, in early embryonic life (18-30 d.), of a sagittal cleft of the embryonic neuraxis which involves neuroectoderm, notochord, and endoderm. Incorporation of a persistent neurenteric canal is invoked to explain the origin of … Read more

1973 — Studies on the effect of cold-storage on rat atria.Abstract
The effect of cold-storage was studied on rat atria. Storage did not change the spontaneous rate but caused a reduction in the contractility. Stored atria had a low intracellu1ar K+ concentration and had a reduced resting potential, action potential height, duration, area and depolarization rate. Incubation in low K+ produced an increase in the contractility of the stored but not of fresh atria. Fresh atria incubated in 12 mM K+ had electrophysiological characteristics similar to but had a contractile force greater than those of stored atria. ATP content of stored atria was reduced. Incubation of stored atria with adenosine increased … Read more
