The thesis is a test of Eric Nordlinger's Conflict Regulation in Divided Societies. Nordlinger's theory of how communal conflicts are regulated puts emphasis on the ability of elites to overcome hostility at the nonelite level in order to voluntarily regulate communal conflict, among themselves. If there is structured elite predominance and political security of elites with respect to second-rank leaders, elites are able to act on conflict regulating motives in order to regulate conflict through six conflict regulating practices. Antibodirs raised against rat thyroglobulin were labeled with the enzyme horseradish peroxidase, when sections of rat were placed in contact with the labeled antibodies, the staining for peroxidase revealed the sites of binding of the antibodies to the sections. In another series, the antibodies were labeled with radioactive 125I-iodide and tho sites of binding detected by radioautoqraphy. Light and electron microscopic study by either procedure revealed that the luminal colloid was the most active site of bindinq. Within follicular cel1s, the following organelles were labeled: rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, apical vesicles and colloid droplets. The supraoptic nucleus of the hypothalamus and the neural lobe of the hypophysis were examined in 120 g rats made "water deficient" by ingestion of hypertonic (1.75%) sodium chloride solution for 14 days, in comparison with controls given tap water. In the salt-treated group, activation of lupraoptic neurons was indicated by their enlarqement and by depletion of neurosecretory material from most of their terminals in the neural lobe. Administration of apomorphine, a dopamine (DA) agonist, led to a short-term decrease in adrenal catecholamines (CA) and a long-term increase in adrenal tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) activity. The lowered CA were not responsible for the increase in enzyme activity. Instead, the increase was the result of changes in sympathetic activity to the adrenal medulla. DA agonists and a DA precursor increased adrenal TH activity in rats; this increase was prevented by blockade off receptors. Destruction or blockade of serotonin (5-HT) neurons also increased adrenal TH; this effect was partially reversed by a 5-HT precursor. The orientation of human erythrocyte membrane proteins was examined using the following techniques: i. lactoperoxidase-catalyzed iodination of the external surface with l25I and the cytoplasmic surface with 131I followed by proteolytic digestion of either the external surface (resealed ghosts) or cytoplasmic surface (inside-out vesicles), ii. phosphorylation of inside-out vesicles with alpha-32P-ATP in conjunction with alkaline phosphatase treatment; and iii. phospholipase C treatment of intact cells followed by enzymic iodination.
