Read more

1979 — An EMG analysis of the validity of using weighted hockey sticks of specific overload trainingAbstract
"This investigation was lU1dertaken to determine the effectiveness of weighted hockey sticks in overloading selected muscles involved in the execution of the ice hockey snap shot. Four varsity hockey players performed snap shots using a control hockey stick and three weighted experimental sticks. An EMG investigation was conducted on six muscles - the pectoralis major, triceps brachii, flexor carpi ulnaris, biceps brach1i, teres major and rhomboid major. The measure of comparison was the computer calculation of integrated sums. All three experimental sticks placed an overload on three of six muscles tested - the pectoralis major, rhomboid major and teres major. … Read more

1979 — Studies on the prostaglandin system in brain with emphasis on the precursor-product relationshipAbstract
The arachidonic acid released post-mortem from the complex lipids of rat forebrain labelled with {('3)H(,8)}-arachidonic acid had a specific activity close to that of the total phospholipids and much lower than that of the neutral lipids. The arachidonic acid is probably released from a mixture of phospholipids which excludes phosphatidylserine and phosphatidic acid. In the microsomal fraction, the specific activity of free arachidonic acid was very close to that of phosphatidylinositol. In rat cerebral cortex slices incubated in the presence of {('2)H(,8)}-arachidonic acid, prostaglandin F(,2(alpha)) reached maxiumum labelling before any of the lipids examined except for a pool of rapidly … Read more

1979 — Origin and evolution of the Pleistocene Olorgesailie Lake series : Kenya Rift ValleyAbstract
The Olorgesailie Lake beds were investigated in order to explain the existence of the former lake, place the beds in a Pleistocene chronology, and evaluate the evidence for climatic change. This was done by preparing a denudation chronology for the Kenya Rift Valley. Chronologies derived from volcanic and sedimentary stratigraphies, palaeomagnetic observations, and geomorphological analysis were combined to produce an account of drainage since 2.3 Ma BP.There was a sequence of Quaternary Lakes, Olorgesailie representing only one episode in a transition from continental to internal drainage caused by the evolving Rift. The stratigraphic facies originated in volcanic and tectonic events, with … Read more

Read more

1979 — The economic allocation of government expenditures in Canada and the role of social rate of return analyses /Abstract
This study concerns itself with the process of public sector resource allocation in Canada from 1965-1975. An examination of the Federal Government's own procedure manual for program evaluation, and the analysis of several program evaluations for Departments of Health, Education and Manpower, reveal that the analytical procedures and economic precepts used depart significantly from accepted norms of economic theory. Consequently, the rates of return claimed for these programs are distorted and, where they are used for the rationing of public sector resources, collective welfare will not be optimized. The major causes of these problems are improper analytical methodology and the … Read more

1979 — Facial expression and redundancy in American sign languageAbstract
Native and non-native signers' comprehension of American Sign Language {ASL) with and without facial expression in good and. Poor viewing conditions was investigated with a shadowing task. Removal of the face did not reduce shadowing accuracy for any shadowing measure under any experimental condition. Visual noise tended to disrupt shadowing more when the face was present than when it was absent. The effects occurred for both groups with native signers being superior to non-native signers under all conditions. Shadowing accuracy was correlated with comprehension-question performance. Detailed analysis of shadowing errors showed that omissions were more common than substitutions. Linguistically, native … Read more

1979 — Stochastic fatigue crack growth : an experimental studyAbstract
This thesis experimentally investigates the statistics (mean and variance) of the fatigue-cycle-dependent evolutions of both the crack tip front penetration's distribution function and the microscopic growth rate's distribution function, as a fatigue crack propagates to final fracture. A novel technique which facilitates striation counting and striation spacing measurements, is developed and used for extracting and analyzing the relevant statistical data for characterizing the stochastic fatigue crack propagation in polycrystalline metals. Two types of pure copper materials are investigated. The investigation confirms the existence of the mean and variance of both the crack front penetration and its growth rate. Details of … Read more

1979 — The Campaign against tuberculosis in Canada, 1900-1950Abstract
The campaign against tuberculosis in Canada began as part of a whole urban social reform movement occurring at the turn of the century. Reformers fought the disease on two fronts: using a bacteriological approach (to eliminate the germ as the cause of the disease) and a social reform approach (attacking the underlying social causes, such as long working hours and alcoholism). This changed after the First World War. Now the bacteriological approach to the disease was pre-eminent, with federally expanded facilities, increasing provincial involvement, a growth in technology, and a resulting division of labour. The specialists directed the campaign, new … Read more
