Read more

1979 — Neuronal regulation of adrenal ornithine decarboxylase.Abstract
The role of the central nervous system in the regulation of adrenal ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity has been studied. Medullary and cortical tissues were separated and the enzyme activities measured in vitro. Many factors affecting ODC activity were analyzed separately and in combination: pharmacological (oxotremorine, methylatropine, reserpine); surgical (splanchnicotomy, spinal cord transection); hormonal (hypophysectomy); and environmental cold exposure, restraint). […] Read more

1979 — Spectral analysis of operators polynominalsAbstract
The main result of this thesis is a necessary and sufficient condition for an operator polynomial, L(A)-A1A, to have a Wiener-Hopf factorization with respect to a simple closed contour, y, not intersecting the spectrum of L. A spectral approach to the particular case of stable factorization was developed by Gohberg, Lerer, and Rodman. This approach is developed further here, so that the general case can be considered. One obtains a spectral theory of operator polynomials which is an extension of the spectral theory of linear operators. Read more

1979 — The ecology of Oreaster reticulatus (L.) (Echinodermata : Asteroidea) in the Caribbean /Abstract
Oreaster reticulatus was studied in eight populations inhabiting shallow-water grassbeds and/or sand bottoms off Carriacou and Union Island in the Grenadines, and off St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands (Caribbean). The sea star is fundamentally an omnivorous, microphagous substratum grazer: grassblades and/or surface sediments are accumulated beneath the disc by tube feet, and associated micro-organisms and detritus are ingested and digested by extraoral eversion of the cardiac stomach. Substratum grazing involves minimal foraging effort; however, the low concentration of particulate food resources necessitates frequent feeding. O. reticulatus also has a limited capacity for herbivory and can hydrolyze soluble algal … Read more

1979 — Approaches to the chemical synthesis of oligoribonucleotidesAbstract
The conversion of 8,2'-S-anhydroadenosine to adenosine was studied in order to determine the feasibility of using 8,2'-S-anhydropurine nucleosides for oligoribonucleotide synthesis. Sulfoxide derivatives of 8,2'-S-anhydroadenosine were prepared efficiently; however when they were subjected to Pummerer reaction conditions in an attempt to introduce a 2'-substituent, extensive decomposition occurred. The synthesis of t-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives of cytidine and guanosine nucleosides was accomplished. Preparations were fast and simple, and most of the desired 2',5' diprotected nucleosides were obtained in greater than 50% yield from the nonsilylated nucleosides. Using the phosphorodichlorodite procedure, silylated nucleosides were easily incorporated into ribonucleotides. In addition to 3',5'-linked ribonucleotides, 2',5'- … Read more

1979 — Modes of production and guaranteed annual income in James Bay Cree societyAbstract
This thesis analyzes the consequences for the domestic mode of production of the Cree-Montagnais of Quebec of its successive articulations with the Euro-North American capitalist economic and state formation. By examining the historical and ethnographic literature, and on the basis of our own case study at Paint Hills of the periods immediately prior to and following the implementation of a guaranteed income for hunters, we demonstrate the persistence of traditional relations of production through a series of changing productive forces and relations with the larger society. We are led to reject the idea that relations with the capitalist economy and … Read more

1979 — A study of the development of agric horizons in Quebec soils /Abstract
Pan layers have been observed in profiles of humo-ferric podzol soils of the St. Lawrence Lowland region (Quebec, Canada). Physical, chemical and mineralogical studies were conducted on four selected profiles, three cultivated, and one non-cultivated, in order to assess the influence of cultivation in the development of an agric horizon. The non-clay fractions (2-0.02 mm) of the parent material contained chlorite, mica with feldspar and quartz as the predominant light minerals, hornblende, pyroxenes, olivines, epidote, magnetite, ilmenite, anatase and rutile in the heavy mineral fraction. The fine silt (2-20 (mu)m) and clay (< 2 (mu)m) fractions of the sandy parent … Read more
