The static mechanical properties of the respiratory system have been studied in newborn mammals (body size from rat to pig) and in animals (rats and rabbits) during growth. The elastic recoil pressure at functional residual capacity of the newborn is less than the adult value. The dry lung weight (LW)/body weight (BW) ratio is larger in the newborns (NB) than the adults (A). Functional residual capacity (FRC) is directly related to BW in the newborn. Canada has pursued during the postwar period a policy of accelerated capital cost allowances to stimulate private investment. Faster write offs increase a firm's cash flows and hence internal funds available for investment. These allowances reduce government revenues since taxes are deferred. These deferred taxes have grown rapidly and now more attention is being paid to the effects of tax incentive devices on investment and on government revenues. In the thesis non-neoclassical models of investment are employed for an analysis of investment in two manufacturing industries. Body composition studies (BC) by a multiple isotope dilution technique were performed for studying nutritional parameters and nutritional support. A group of anthropometric, biochemical and immunological parameters were measured and the data indicated that these parameters were valid measures of the nutritional state for epidemiological studies; but, of little value in assessing the individual's nutritional state. Of 44 morbidly obese patients undergoing jejunoileal bypass, 33 patients lost only body fat. Eleven patients lost both body fat and body cell mass (BCM) thus developing protein malnutrition. This thesis contends that the rationale for moral and religious instruction from 1960 to 1980, as it is given by the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, is: 1) brief but valid, in the eyes of the Provincial Government, the parents of students in the Board and the major Protestant denominations. 2) incomplete. The subject of this dissertation is the impact of Canada's position within the international capitalist system on foreign policy as manifested towards Korea from 1947 to 1955. Canada is characterized as an "advanced dependent-developed" country, exhibiting both "dependent" and "independent" directions in its economic development. The dissertation argues that a similar combination could be distinguished in foreign policy. A scale is elaborated identifying four hypothetical categorizations of policy: Independent; Limited-Independent; Active-Dependent; and, Dependent; and the scale is applied to critical points in Canada-Korea relations. This thesis presents for the first time a symmetrical, bilateral model of central pathways in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), based on known neural pathways and their interconnections on both sides of the brainstem. The model explains, simultaneously, the known behaviour of individual neural groups within the system (in central pathways) and of eye movements at its output. It does not require a long time constant "neural integrator" (NI) nor separate pathways for the generation of slow and fast phases of nystagmus, as in previous models. This study investigated the immunological aspects of Entamoeba histolytica infection in Syrian hamsters. Immunization of hamsters by an intradermal injection with live axenic amoebae, conferred complete protection against amoebic liver abscess. Protection was achieved with homologous or heterologous strains of E. histolytica and was dose-dependent. Combination of thymectomy and anti T-cell serum treatment significantly increased the size of liver abscess and metastatic dissemination of the parasite. It was shown that a cell-mediated immune response controls the healing of skin ulcers in vaccinated animals and thus confers on them resistance to intrahepatic amoebic challenge infection. Differentiation and gene expression in the oomycete Achlya ambisexualis ( strain E87) were studied during three responses, sexual antheridium formation, asexual sporangium formation and heat shock. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of proteins labelled in vivo and in cell free systems directed by poly(A) mRNA showed that during formation of antheridia only one change was detectable in the proteins synthesized. No detectable changes were observable in the translatable poly(A) RNA population indicating that post-translational events may be required for differentiation.
