It has been proposed that contractile proteins may mediate the events of the exocytotic release of hormones or neurotransmitters because of the similarities between the process of stimulus-secretion coupling and excitation-contraction coupling. Bovine adrenal medullary chromaffin cells were isolated and cultured and the morphological and secretory characteristics of these cells investigated. The results demonstrated that cultured chromaffin cells were a good model for developmental and secretory studies. Two isomeric forms of actin ((beta) and (gamma)), differing in isoelectric properties, were purified from chromaffin cells and characterized. Canada's volunteer military faces a major manning problem. High attrition rates reflect youth indifference to military service, and research indicates that the manpower pool from which recruits are drawn will shrink significantly in the next two decades, exacerbating an already difficult situation. This thesis reports on the first part of a two phase study investigating some of the variables and the dynamics underlying training attrition. This thesis seeks to determine the nature and character of Canada's foreign policy towards Vietnam. Dependent upon Southeast Asian stability for strategic resources, a merchandise surplus and the expansion of the American economy, Canada also benefitted directly through increased exports of staple goods, automotive parts and war material. Ottawa's record on the International Control Commissions was characterized by partisan voting, complicity in the violation of the Geneva and Paris Agreements and the rationalization of Washington's strategy. The syntheses of nocardicin analogues 31, 52 and cephalosporin analogue 95 are described. None of the above compounds showed the significant antibacterial activity. The reaction of azidoacetyl chloride with various Schiff bases derived from phenylpropargyl aldehyde and substituted anilines, afforded (beta)-lactams in fair to good yields. A new bicyclic (beta)-lactam 162 was synthesized. The key step involved the phosphorylation of the nitrogen on an N-unsubstituted (beta)-lactam ring. A key intermediate 188 for the synthesis of monobactam analogue has been prepared.  Read more

The pattern of regenerating optic axons following various surgical manipulations in the goldfish brain has been studied using ('3)H proline radioauthography. The results demonstrate that in most cases severed optic axons regenerate preferentially into degenerating axonal pathways. It is therefore suggested that the degenerating axonal debris and the concomitant glial proliferation in a degenerating pathway, in some way, influences the entry of regenerating optic axons into the path. It is argued that for many regions of the earth, ground based remote sensing techniques for rainfall measurement are impractical due to their cost and limited range of coverage. Global rainfall estimates must therefore be provided largely by satellites, particularly those exploiting atmospheric windows in the visible/IR and microwave regimes. A 2-D pattern matching technique using visible and IR data is proposed and its accuracy investigated. Because these wavelengths respond primarily to cloud and not rain sized drops, significant accuracy may be achieved in rain areas, but not directly in amounts. The phototactic zoospores of Nowakowskiella elegans (Nowak.) Schroeter and Cladochytrium replicatum Karling are similar in their ultrastructure and typical of the revised Chytridiales (Barr, 1980, Can. J. Bot. 58: 2380-2394). For a carbon source both species utilize cellulose, D-cellobiose, D-glucose, D-xylose, and D-mannose. Several sources of organic nitrogen, and inorganic nitrate, and ammonium are utilized. Both species are deficient for thiamine. Germination of the zoospore cyst in both cases is exogenous, and daughter nuclei migrate and divide independently in the developing rhizomycelium. Efficient syntheses for appropriately derivatized methyl 8R,9(R and S), 11R-trihydroxy-12-oxododeca-5Z-enoates (53, 59) via their respective 5,6-anhydro-3-deoxy-1,2-0-isopropylidene-(alpha)-D-hexofuranoses (18 and 38) are described. These aldehydes were subsequently converted to the corresponding methyl 8(R and S), 9(R and S), 11R-trihydroxy-eicosa-5Z,12E,14Z-trienoates (64, 72, 82, 91). Model studies towards the synthesis of 8R,11R,15(R and S)-trihydroxy-9S,12-oxyeicosa-5Z,13E-dienoic acids (1) were carried out.  Read more

"The laboratory rat serves as the normal host for Nippostrongylus brasiliensis and as an abnormal host for the pig Ascaris, A· suum. The migration and behaviour of these parasitic nematodes in the rat and the parasite-induced changes in the host's lungs and blood were studied and compared. In its normal rat host, N· brasiliensis undergoes a regular and predictable pattern of migration via the blood circulation to the lungs and finally to the small intestine, where the worm becomes sexually mature. Learning disabled boys were categorized on the basis of consistency of lowest WISC/WISC-R factor scores over time. The Consistent subgroup with lowest scores on factor 3 also displayed significant factor score discrepancy. The Inconsistent subgroup had varying lowest factor scores with no significant discrepancy, such variation not apparently related to a delay hypothesis. Patterns in the Consistent Factor 3 group could be suggestive of either a delay or deficit. Group differences occurred frequently in patterns, rather than levels of performance, the Inconsistents displaying patterns similar to able learners. The European refugee problem between 1933 and 1947 posed serious difficulties for the nations of asylum. Despite the trend towards immigration restriction, France and the United States remained the foremost countries of refuge and resettlement during the interwar years. The overwhelming numbers of refugees, however, tested their tradition of asylum, and both nations failed that tradition from the humanitarian point of view. During the 1930's, the French harried the Americans for refusing to aid and resettle the refugees from France, complicating the diplomatic relations between the two countries. While terrorism as such has long historical roots, terrorist activities directed against aviation are recent and spectacular. States fighting this kind of violence have used dissuasion through national and international criminal law and have responded militarily after the fact, justifying their actions as humanitarian interventions. History and definition precede a study of the international concerted action against this plaque. Special chapters are devoted to an analysis of the three international conventions on aviation security, preventive measures such as passenger searches at airports, and a posteriori armed actions.
