1981 — Taurine transport in mammalian kidney : genetic and environmental influencesAbstract
Taurine transport in purified brush-border membranes from rodent kidney is concentrative and driven by the Na('+) gradient and transmembrane potential difference. The high-affinity, low-capacity carrier is specific for (beta)-amino compounds. Inherited, strain-dependent influences on taurine reabsorption were investigated in the C3H/HeJ strain, a low excretor of taurine in urine and the C57Bl/6J strain, a high excretor. Although both strains transport taurine similarly at the luminal membrane, impaired exit at the baso-lateral membrane of renal epithelium in the hypertaurinuric strain results in increased intracellular levels of taurine and subsequent backflux into the urine. The kidney is an important arbiter of taurine … Read more

1981 — Chemical separation in electrostatic precipitatorsAbstract
This work was carried out to investigate the mechanisms of solid-solid separation in electrostatic precipitators. The separation of mixture of pure compounds from each other and the components of an industrial dust has been studied in a wire-and-duct type laboratory-scale electrostatic precipitator. Particle size distribution affected the separation most, but both the dielectric constant and electrical resistivity of the dust can be important. Operating voltage and air velocity in the precipitator also affected the separation along the precipitator length. The SRI computer model of precipitator performance gave reasonable predictions of separation under conditions of negligible re-entrainment. An apparently unique relationship … Read more

1981 — D.H. Lawrence's revision of E.M. Forster's fictionAbstract
Lawrence's revision of the fiction of his English comtemporary E. M. Forster is a key to the way in which Lawrence's imagination worked. He discovered in early 1915 that Forster was already producing a body of fiction which treated many of his own themes in a manner which resembled the visionary and prophetic mode he wished to create. This study demonstrates that Lawrence's motivation and method in the writing of many scenes in The Rainbow, Women in Love, The Lost Girl, Aaron's Rod, and St. Mawr are governed by his compulsive misreading of scenes, symbols, characters, settings, plots and motifs … Read more

1981 — An Analysis of structures : Phase/Timbre.Abstract
Music is an art expressed through the presentation of successivetenporal spans. '!he resulting patterns create form.Tatporal spans may be articulated by arrj perceptual change in themusical fabric. In Structures: Phase/TiIrbre divisions are expressed bychanges in texture, density, timbre, register, ha:rnony, and dynamics.'!he structures created by the tenporal spans, or P'lases, arepatterned on a nodel of tinbre. Tinbre is the result of many aoousticalIilenonena., one of which is the overtones present in a sound. 1981 — Theoretical and experimental studies of the flow of cohesionless granular materialsAbstract
A study of the constitutive equations of the flow of cohesionless granular materials at large rates of deformation and low stress levels is presented. The interstitial fluid effects are assumed negligible and the particles approximately incompressible. Dimensional arguments and experimental observations suggest that two different regimes of flow may occur. At low rates of deformation, the Coulomb friction gives rise to stresses that are rate independent (of the plastic type). At large rates of deformation, momentum transfer arises from particles collisions and the resulting stresses become rate dependent (of the viscous type). A continuum model that includes both types of … Read more

1981 — The development of an in vitro perfusion system to assess the function of rabbit kidneys and its application towards the treatment of kidneys with the cryoprotectant dimethylsulfoxideAbstract
A colloid-free, reduced pressure in vitro normothermic perfusion system was developed to assess rabbit kidney function following cryobiological manipulation. Rabbit kidneys retained significant levels of function with stable or increasing GFR, sodium reabsorption of 40 to 60%, and glucose reabsorption of greater than 80% of the filtered load. Including dextran in the perfusate as a source of colloid osmotic pressure was deleterious to kidney function. The kidney demonstrated sensitivity to exogenous energy substrate; supplementation of lactate and glucose resulted in better function over butyrate with glucose or glucose alone. The system proved sensitive to ischemia and to stimulation with an … Read more

1981 — Crystal growth and photoconductivity of tellurium and selenium-tellurium alloysAbstract
A study of the growth of monocrystals of tellurium and selenium-tellurium alloys by the Czochralski method has been made, together with measurements of the photoconductivity in such materials. In tellurium, it was found that large temperature gradients occur within a growing ingot which cause an increase in the concentration of lattice defects. This concentration can be reduced by subsequent annealing. An etch pit orientation effect was observed enabling the growth direction of an ingot to be determined, arising from a correspondence between preferential growth and etching planes. Photoconductivity in tellurium at 77 K was found to be decreased by abrasive … Read more

1981 — Reactions of 1, 2-dithiolium cations and formation of metal thio-l-dicarbonyl compoundsAbstract
The decomposition of three phenyl-substituted 1,2-dithiolium salts, 3,5-diphenyl-, 3-phenyl- and 4-phenyl- in aqueous, ethanol and DMSO solutions have been examined. With bases of the type hydroxide, ethoxide, DMSO, and acetate, the 1,2-dithiolium ion formed adducts reversibly. Orders of adduct stability were determined in ethanol and water. Many of the adducts were unstable and decomposed to monothio-(beta)-dicarbonyls. The monothio-(beta)-dicarbonyls were in turn unstable and decomposed in aqueous media to the corresponding-(beta)-diketone in the case of the monothiodibenzoylmethane. Reaction of the 1,2-dithiolium ions with sodium sulphide or sodium borohydride led to dithio-(beta)-dicarbonyls. These species were unstable and decomposed to monothio-(beta)-dicarbonyls in the … Read more

1981 — Single cell protein from spent sulphite liquor using yeasts and their fused variantsAbstract
Spent Sulphite Liquor (SSL) derived mainly from hardwoods, was used as enrichment to isolate microorganisms able to utilize the liquor for SCP production. Among the seven types of yeasts and ten types of fungi isolated, two strains of Candida krusei, two strains of Candida rugosa and an unidentified fungus (F-20) were characterized further. Optimal conditions of biomass production were obtained (pH 6.0, 28(DEGREES)C, SSL diluted with water 1:1, addition of 0.2% NaH(,2)PO(,4)). As a result of optimization, efficiencies of conversion ranged from 25% for C. krusei, to 44% for C. rugosa. The yeast species grown in mixed cultures increased the … Read more

1981 — André Gide, traducteur d'anglais littéraireAbstract
This thesis contains eight chapters. The first deals with Gide's knowledge of English, the second with his ideas on translation. The remaining six examine his versions of the following: Gitanjali by Rabindranath Tagore, parts of Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman, The Post Office by Tagore, Typhoon by Joseph Conrad, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by William Blake and the preface of The Old Wive's Tale by Arnold Bennett. The principal conclusions reached are that his English was alarmingly weak, that he must have depended a good deal on the help of others, that his theory of translation was … Read more

1981 — Grid region and and coalescence zone gas exchange in fluidized bedsAbstract
In the coalescence zone, we obtained ozone concentration profiles of pairs of bubbles in vertical and oblique alignments, which show rapid decrease in the interaction period and more gradual decline in the late stages of coalescence. In the grid region, the hydrodynamics of a stream of gas injected vertically into a bed of solids was observed in a semi-circular column containing particles of several sizes and densities. This was found to be similar to those reported in the literature. Furthermore, experiments were carried out in a 15 cm diameter column to characterize the magnitude of gas transfer from spout to … Read more

1981 — Regulation of protein biosynthesis in L-cells infected with reovirusAbstract
The regulation of protein synthesis was examined in L-cells infected with reovirus. To carry out these studies, an in vitro protein synthesizing system was developed from L-cells. Examination of these L-cell extracts showed that the translational apparatus undergoes a transition from cap dependence to cap independence as a function of time post infection. Reovirus progeny subviral particles contain an active RNA polymerase enzyme and inactive or masked guanylyl transferase and methylase enzymes. The 5' terminal structure of the mRNA synthesized by these particles is pGpCp... Examination of the 5' terminal structure of reovirus mRNA associated with polysomes of L-cells infected … Read more

1981 — Phosphorus limitation and competition in the phytoplanktonAbstract
Interspecific competition for phosphorus was studied in continuous lake water cultures of phytoplankton communities from Lake Memphremagog, and its outcome shown to depend primarily on the size of the competitors. Comparison of the activity of the inducible enzyme alkaline phosphatase between the lake and cultures operated at various dilution rates (0.06-0.93 day('-1)) established that in situ phosphorus limitation rarely depressed average community growth rates much below 0.6 day('-1). Growth rates under comparable, or even more severe (0.2-0.3 day('-1)) limitation in culture decreased significantly with increasing cell size. Phosphorus uptake kinetics and cell quotas measured by track autoradiography on the competing … Read more

1981 — The image of the city in the novels of Gogol, Dostoevsky and Bely /Abstract
Gogol, Dostoevsky and Bely are three Russian novelists, most of whose writings are set in the city of St. Petersburg, and whose feelings for their city were a bizarre mixture of love and hatred. This dissertation is divided into four chapters, the first of which is a survey of the attitudes held by the literary predecessors and contemporaries of Gogol, Dostoevsky and Bely toward St. Petersburg, and a discussion of the influence of the French feuilletons on the nineteenth-century Russian urban novel. The second chapter is an investigation of the overall image of the city as presented to the reader … Read more

1981 — Development and application of contour radiographyAbstract
This thesis describes the development and applications of a new, high-speed, non-invasive, radiographic method by which the orientational and configurational characteristics of an internal human organ can be determined. The application of the method requires the organ to possess a radiologically recognizable contour seen simultaneously by two X-ray sources. The method does not rely on the existence of anatomical landmarks or implanted artifacts, neither is any prior information about the general orientation of the contour necessary, nor does the operator need to have stereoscopic acuity. In the presentation, first the developed algorithm is analyzed then the method is described in … Read more

1981 — The mechanical properties of the human lumbar spine /Abstract
This thesis is concerned with the investigation, in vitro, of the mechanical properties of the intact and injured human lumbar spine under general loading conditions, by both experimentation and use of a numerical simulation. For the experimental investigation, a three dimensional loading apparatus and displacement transducer were constructed. In order to standardize the experiment, the influence of several secondary variables was investigated. The load deflection properties of intact and injured joints were then studied. Eight states of injury were considered. As well, the effect of various types of preloading upon joint response was determined. Using the data generated by the … Read more

1981 — The chemical synthesis of ribonucleotides using the dichlorophosphite method : a thesisAbstract
The synthesis of the tertbutyldimethylsilyl derivatives of adenosine is described. The 2',5'-protected nucleosides were rapidly and easily prepared in relatively good yields. The silylated nucleosides are easily incorporated into ribonucleotides using the fast and efficient dichlorophosphite method. The ribonucleotide GpCpApApCpCpA corresponding to the 3'-terminus of (DIAGRAM, TABLE OR GRAPHIC OMITTED...PLEASE SEE DAI) was successfully synthesized in a stepwise fashion. The stepwise and block condensation pathways were compared in the synthesis of CpCpCpCpC. The syntheses of A2'p5'A2'p5'A and other 2',5'- and symmetrically-linked ribonucleotides were readily accomplished. ('31)P NMR was very useful in elucidating the structure of the diribonucleoside monophosphates. A study … Read more

1981 — Mutagenesis in Lotus corniculatus L.Abstract
Some 7,500 seeds of Lotus corniculatus cv. Mirabel were treated with X-rays (3,000-12,000 Rads), ethyl methanesulfonate, 8-ethoxycaffeine, n-hydroxyurea, and 2-aminopurine (0.001 to 1.0% solutions). A total of 93 selfed, partially inbred, and open-pollinated lines, comprising some 22,000 plants, were generated over four generations. Mutagenic effects were assessed on germination, seedling survival, meiotic aberrations, pollen abortion, seed and forage yields, pod dehiscence, winter hardiness, brown floral keel tip color, and cyanoglycoside (HCA) content in the leaves. Dose effects were largely confined to the M(,1) generation. Germination and seedling survival could not be used to predict mutation rates. Higher levels of forage … Read more

1981 — Manifesto, a preliminary model for discourse analysisAbstract
"Manifesto belongs in the class of polemic and didactic discourses. Using rhetorical devices, it seeks to persuade its audience, define its own creators as a cohesive group, and contrast that group with those who oppose it. Manifesto seeks to cause shock and outrage; it causes violence in the discursive, social and political systems. Situated in a marginal position, it seeks to institute its ideology in a central position of power. This accomplished, it usurps the power of the hegemonic discourse, thus losing its previous marginal position and violent character. On a larger scale, Manifesto can be seen as a model … Read more

1981 — The continuity of the hunt theme in palace decoration in the elghteenth century in France /Abstract
The long tradition in the arts of the Hunt, domestic and exotic, as a surrogate for war in peacetime is reflected in the Amiens Hunting Series (1736-1739) along with influences from the waning years of Louis XIV and early trends in the reign of Louis XV. Two of Francois Boucher's lesser known works form part of the Amiens canvases executed for Louis XV's private gallery at Versailles. Carle Van Loo, Charles Parrocel, Jean-Francois de Troy, Jean-Baptiste Pater and Nicolas Lancret contributed to the Series, but Boucher's work is unique due probably to his study of the hunts of Peter Paul … Read more
