This thesis proposes a methodology for planning, scheduling and on-line control of an energy storage system for the integration of wind energy. Using the case study of a remote wind-diesel system, the different time frames of the design and implementation process are detailed. First, a long-term planning approach for rating of the power and energy capacities of the ESS is presented, based on stochastic optimization. The formulation is then adapted into a hourly scheduling approach and results are compared with the expected cost of energy and energy requirements resulting from the planning study. LOX is a marker of poor prognosis in several malignancies and is hypothesized to promote a migratory phenotype in hypoxic breast carcinomas. This thesis aims to characterize the expression of LOX and LOXL2 in human UM and to evaluate the transcriptional control of LOX under simulated hypoxic conditions. DPA and BAPN, both LOX catalytic inhibitors, were used to evaluate the effect of inhibiting this enzyme on cellular proliferation and invasion. Eighty-one percent of FFPE samples stained positive for LOX. High LOX expression correlated with the aggressive epithelioid cell type and was associated with shorter metastasis-free survival. Globally, deforestation is threatening medicinal plant species. Concern about this process has led to renewed interest in medicinal plant research, in an effort to discover medicinal properties before species become extinct. However, little research has been done on the local social impacts of deforestation in regions where populations depend on medicinal plants for their primary health care. This study investigates the impact of deforestation on medicinal plant availability and use in the Bilili Game Management Area in southern Zambia, where rapid deforestation is taking place, and where the local population uses medicinal plants extensively. This research is based on the hypothesis that by permanently immobilizing Fibronectin (FN) on a metal substrate surface, it will be possible to enhance endothelial cells (EC)/surface interactions. FN was covalently bound onto self assembled monolayers (SAMs) modified gold surfaces with COOH terminal groups. SAMs composed of various surface ratios of X/COOH (X=CH3, OH, NH2) were formed in order to control the surface conformation of FN by modulating the surface charge (potential) and wettability. Human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) attachment and proliferation onto such surfaces was investigated. In this thesis, we study the rate of convergence of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on $n$-dimensional at tori. After stating some well known results about the convergence of the eigenfunctions and their Fourier expansion due to Bourgain, Jakobson, and Mockenhaupt, we prove Jakobson's conjecture, which states that the Fourier expansion of the square of eigenfunctions on $n$-dimensional tori are in $l^n$. Lamin A/C, an important component of the nuclear envelope, has been associated with cell differentiation and tissue development. In bone, recent studies have described that altered function of lamin A/C, due to mutations or incorrect processing, is associated with accelerated and severe bone loss. This could be due to alterations in the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) induced by lack of lamin A/C activity. Biological system simulation is an increasingly popular field of study that provides biologists with the tools necessary to simulate biochemical systems in order to obtain quantitative models. The purpose of this thesis is to describe an accelerated version of GridCell, a stochastic biological system simulator. GridCell tracks each individual particle's location in the system, as well as the time evolution of the concentration of each species involved. In electromagnetics, they have largely been applied to scalar, quasi-static, deterministic problems. Regrowth in the lesioned central nervous system is impeded by inhibitory molecules including myelin-associated inhibitors (MAIs) and chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs). Inhibitory molecules engage neuronal cell surface receptors and activate the small GTPase RhoA in injured neurons to mediate neurite outgrowth inhibition through targeted modifications to the cytoskeleton. We study quasi superharmonic functions in Brelot spaces and the relationship between a reduced function, and harmonic and Jensen measures. We introduce the concept of quasi multiply superharmonic functions on a product of two Brelot spaces and study their properties. A technique is presented for designing high-order continuous-time (CT) delta-sigma modulators with noise-transfer-function (NTF) enhancement. This enhancement is achieved by injecting the quantization noise into the forward path of the CT delta-sigma modulator, through a passive CT filter. This passive filter introduces a real pole-zero pair into the NTF. Thus, the order of the NTF is increased, without affecting the signal transfer function (STF). Horticultural producers are in need of efficient and timely techniques for determining crop water requirements. The question of when and how much to irrigate, termed irrigation scheduling, is particularly important for high-value crops such as strawberries (Fragaria ananassa). During the growing season, irrigation scheduling decisions are influenced by climatic variables such as rainfall, temperature and humidity, which directly impact soil moisture levels. A field study was therefore conducted to evaluate two soil moisture sensors for irrigation scheduling of commercial strawberries on a farm in Simcoe, Southern Ontario. A 5kb fragment of the pufferfish Fugu rubripes NR1 promoter spanning nucleotides -2729 to + 2343 was shown to be sufficient to drive expression of the NR1 gene in zebrafish. I performed a cross-species sequence comparison of the 5kb Fugu NR1 promoter with homologous pufferfish (Tetraodon nigroviridis), zebrafish (Danio rerio) and stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) genomes and identified five non-coding evolutionary conserved regions (ECRs) containing cis-elements that serve as putative binding sites for eleven different trans-acting factors. Following endocytosis, cargo is delivered to the sorting endosome, where it is selected for degradation or recycled back to the cell surface. The various trafficking steps within the endosomal system are regulated by Rabs, small GTPases, which toggle between an inactive GDP-loaded conformation and an active GTP-loaded conformation. During mammalian skeletal development, endochondral ossification is preceded by the establishment of a cartilage template through a process termed chondrogenesis. Disruptions in chondrogenesis result in chondrodysplasia, a disorder of the appendicular skeleton which is characterized by disproportionately shortened limbs. A severe chondrodysplasia phenotype is observed when site-1 protease (S1P) is disrupted in both the zebrafish and the mouse, indicating that S1P is essential for normal skeletal development. Uganda has reached a peace agreement with the leaders of the LRA, indicted by the ICC, in which they would be tried by national tribunals and serve “alternative sentences”. The LRA demands the withdrawal of the ICC warrants as a pre-condition to any settlement. This Master's thesis aims to answer two questions: (1) Why do states sign international investment agreements (IIA)?; (2) What determines the substantive strength of these agreements? I use an event history analysis and an ordered logit model, respectively, to answer these questions. I find partial support for the hypothesis according to which the interests of capital-exporting states determine the pattern of IIA diffusion.
