Neck pain is an increasing problem in industrialized societies. Research is necessary to find ways to objectively measure neck dysfunction. The purpose of this Master's project was to examine the test-retest properties of a dynamometric system for neck force measurements and to obtain reference measures on isometric cervical strength in a healthy population. Twenty-eight healthy subjects participated in this study; 16 males and 12 females. Cervical strength was measured using the MCU(TM) Multi-Cervical Unit (BTE Technologies(c)) in six directions: flexion, extension, protraction, retraction and right and left lateral flexion. Malgré leur importance dans le budget radiatif terrestre et les modèles atmosphériques, les nuages arctiques restent mal documentés et incompris. Le déploiement d'un radar millimétrique et d'un lidar à haute résolution spectrale à Eureka (80°N) en août 2005 offre un ensemble unique de données pour l'étude des nuages arctiques. We define the notion of relative sectional curvature for 2-complexes, and prove that a compact angled 2-complex that has negative sectional curvature relative to planar sections has coherent fundamental group. We analyze a certain type of 1-complex that we call flattenable graphs Gamma→ X for an compact angled 2-complex X, and show that if X has nonpositive sectional curvature, and if for every flattenable graph pi1 (Gamma) → pi1( X) is finitely presented, then X has coherent fundamental group. ABSTRACT Based on a new conception of airports, and recognizing the airport's preeminent role in strengthening a region's economy, this thesis centers on the positive and negative aspects of privatizing international airports. Turbo codes have achieved near Shannon limit performance in data communication over noisy channels. Recently introduced EXtrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) Charts [15] have become an essential part of turbo code design and have also been used as a complementary design tool for the traditional bit error rate simulations. Depending on their context of activation, the balance of B cell production of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines is affected. Recent work has shown that Toll-like receptor (TLR) ligation is an important signal affecting B cell activation. The main objective of this thesis is to study and investigate the dynamics and stability of cantilevered structures subjected to internal, external, or simultaneous internal and external axial flows. This was accomplished, in some cases, by deriving the linear equations of motion using a Newtonian approach and, in other cases, by making the necessary modifications to existing theoretical models. This research presents automatic aerodynamic shape optimization results for the NREL S809 wind turbine profile. The objective of this re-design was to improve the total lift to drag ratio for steady low-Mach number flows. This research sets the groundwork for the development of a multidisciplinary optimization framework for complete wind turbine rotors. To develop the aerodynamic design framework for the wind turbine applications, low-Mach preconditioning and Menter's k-omega SST turbulence model have been implemented into the flow solver. Pour élaborer à ce sujet, ce projet a comme objectif principal d'évaluer les perceptions de compétences dans les domaines scolaires de mathématiques et d'épellation sur un groupe de 60 adolescents dont 30 avec TA et 30 sans TA. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung hyperinflation has been suggested to reduce cardiac output (Qc) and impede peripheral blood flow, thereby contributing to reduced peak oxygen utilization (VO2) and exercise intolerance observed in this population. Multiple-point simulation (MPS) methods have been developed over the past decade as a mean to generate stochastic simulations while reproducing complex geological patterns, such as high-grade depositional veins, groups of high-grade lentil shaped orebodies, or the spatial geometries and patterns of diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes. A crucial element affecting individuals' responses to a health threat is how certain or uncertain they feel about whether that health threat will occur. Moreover, individuals differ in the degree to which they are affected by uncertainty. I propose that state and trait differences in uncertainty interact to predict psychosocial responses. The first manuscript shows that a higher intolerance of uncertainty (IU) leads to greater information-seeking about a health threat. These impacts include collision risks, direct and indirect habitat loss and barrier effects. This study compares the willingness to pay values from two different stated preference methods, choice modeling (CM) and contingent valuation (CV). The CV approach used was a multiple bounded discrete choice (MBDC) format. The WTP values were estimated for different food products that contained different environmental and health attributes. The two methods were found to generate statistically different WTP estimates for tomatoes and pork and were statistically similar for milk. The design and mechanical performance of a helicopter horizontal stabilizer slat made by resin transfer moulding (RTM) can be evaluated with finite element analysis (FEA). To verify the validity of the assumptions used in the modelling of the slat structure, static mechanical tests were performed on prototype slats which were half of the full-size length. Progranulin is a secreted high molecular weight growth factor. While inappropriate over-expression of the progranulin gene has been associated with many cancers, haploinsufficiency leads to atrophy of the frontotemporal lobes and development of a form of dementia (FTLD-U). We have demonstrated that progranulin is abundantly expressed in mouse motor neurons in vivo and primary cultures in vitro. The cellular location of progranulin was examined using confocal microscopy. Progranulin was localised to organelles using immunocytochemistry and by examining the intracellular fate of exogenously expressed flu orescently-labelled progranulin. Objective: To compare low birth weight (LBW) (< 2,500g) between infants born to adolescent and adult mothers in Iquitos, Peru. Methods: A random sample of 4,467 birth records was collected. Multivariate analyses were performed to compare both the proportion of LBW and mean birth weight of newborns of adolescents (10-14 yrs, 15-19 yrs) and adults (≥ 20 yrs) and then for primiparous mothers only. Results: For all mothers, all adolescents had significantly greater odds of having a LBW infant than adults. For primiparous mothers, the same was true only for 10-14 year-olds. The theme of this dissertation has been to look at characteristics of neurogenesis of the interneurons of mammalian telencephalon, mainly in the striatum and cortex, and compare with neurogenesis patterns of projection neurons. In addition, we have looked at developmental postnatal anterograde thalamostriatal survival mechanisms of striatal neuronal populations and their possible implications in Huntington's disease. Motivated by the interest in graphene as a chemical sensor, this thesis presents an analysis of how the conductance of a fabricated graphene field effect transistor can be modulated by the presence of water vapour and oxygen in the substrate of the device. The fabrication process of a graphene field effect transistor consists of optically locating a graphene monolayer on an oxidized silicon substrate, and contacting it with metal electrodes using electron-beam lithography. "Development of others" appears consistently in leadership competency frameworks; managers are now being asked to think of themselves as teachers in addition to their myriad other roles. Little empirical evidence however seems to exist that managers who teach their employees learn to lead better, generate more employee satisfaction and are indeed more effective than those who do not. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system (CNS). The pathology of MS is characterized by the infiltration of immune cells into the CNS and by the destruction of myelin-producing cells, the oligodendrocytes. During spermatogenesis, there are massive alterations to the epigenome associated with tightly regulated gene transcription and chromatin reorganization including a tightly regulated pattern of histone H3 methylation. In vitro experiments were conducted to determine whether folate depletion could alter global histone H3 methylation at lysine 4 and 9 in cultured spermatogonia-like GC-1 cells. Borehole and 3-D seismic data were integrated to define the stratigraphic architecture and generate 3-dimensional geological models of the Mannville Group in Saskatchewan. By measuring the local Brownian motion of water molecules, diffusion MRI provides estimates of local fibre orientations in tissues such as the white matter of the brain.
