As Liberia recovers from nearly a decade and a half of civil war, the largest obstacle to long-term stability remains the divisive issue of land. Drawing from data collected in central (Salala District, Bong County) and northwestern (Foya, Quardu Gboni and Voinjama Districts, Lofa County) Liberia, this thesis explores the conditions that produce and perpetuate land conflict. The violence and social dislocations of war created an opportunity for Liberians to confront their tumultuous relations with pre-war authority. Methyl ferulate and isolated feruloylated non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) from sugar-beet pulp and wheat bran were used as substrates to evaluate the levels of feruloyl esterase (FAE) activity and substrate specificity of twenty multi-enzymatic preparations. The synthesis of feruloylated monosaccharides by FAEs expressed in the six best multi-enzymatic preparations from Bacillus spp. (Ceremix), Humicola spp. (Depol 740L), Aspergillus oryzae (Flavourzyme), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (Multifect P 3000), Bacillus subtilis (RP-1), and Trichoderma reesei (Depol 670L) was investigated using a surfactant-less organic microemulsion system as reaction medium. The human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) can be phylogentically classified into multiple groups, subtypes, sub-subtypes and recombinant forms. Subtype B HIV-1 is responsible for approximately 10% of the pandemic and is primarily located in the developed regions of the world, whereas subtype C HIV-1 is responsible for over 50% of the pandemic and is primarily located in the sub-Saharan African countries. This ethnographic account of scientists' reasoning is based on thirteen months of anthropological fieldwork among the hundred scientists in a Canadian government directorate mandated to assess the safety and efficacy of proposed medicines while "respecting philosophical and cultural diversity." Background A gap exists within healthcare between identifying and treating adverse psychological outcomes to abortion. Meanwhile, 30% of women worldwide experience significant emotional distress after abortion. Specifically, younger women are at the highest risk for developing mental health problems after abortion. No empirical data for interventions to relieve psychological distress after abortion were found. Goal: This thesis provides a framework to identify and treat psychological distress after legal, induced, voluntary abortion. Cette thèse à pour objet d'étudier les effets des ions ferreux (Fe(II)) sur la stabilisation, par neutralisation à base de chaux, de l'arsenic (As(V)) contenu dans des solutions acides sulfatées. Le rôle des ions ferreux a été analysé à l'aide de différents types d'expériences. Randomized gossip algorithms are attractive for collaborative in-network processing and aggregation because they are fully asynchronous, they require no overhead to establish and form routes, and they do not create any bottleneck or single point of failure. The present study is an examination of the association between attachment relationships and academic achievement in First Nations adolescents. Mother, father and peer attachment was assessed using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (IPPA; Armsden & Greenberg, 1987) and final grades were used as a measure of academic achievement. Seventy-six First Nations students from a remote community in northern Quebec participated in the study. The results of a regression analysis indicated that attachment to father significantly predicted academic achievement. Current sea-ice models evolve towards higher spatial resolutions and levels of convergence of their numerical solution, which refines their simulated ice deformation fields, while still employing the values of the dynamic parameters used in earlier models. In this work, we investigate the effect of spatial resolution and convergence on the choice of optimal model parameters by comparing drag coefficients and ice compressive and shear strength sensitivity studies conducted with a viscous-plastic sea-ice model of the Arctic. Inattention and reading problems are commonly recognized as co-occurring difficulties that are associated with academic underachievement. However, studies in both domains of research tend to focus on discrete interventions, with fewer observational studies of naturally existing teaching practices associated with growth in children's reading and behavioural development. The least-used direction (LUD) rule is one of a class of largely unanalyzed pivot rules - the history-based rules. History-based pivot rules guide the progression of edge following algorithms like the Simplex method. This thesis investigates the problem of finding an exponential length LUD path on a particular kind of digraph known as an acyclic unique sink orientation of a hypercube (AUSO). In addition, a survey of six well-known history-based pivot rule and examples to illustrate their independence is given. This thesis examines women's insights as mothers on participating in a support group for intimate partner violence. Qualitative research using semi-structured interviews were conducted with 8 women, aged 36 to 60 years, who lived in Montreal, Canada, and had one or more children. Open-ended and semi-structured interview questions were designed to elicit information regarding experiences of mothering through intimate partner violence, including participation in a support group. En effet, les chercheurs sont contraints par son imprévisibilité et la grande échelle spatiale sur laquelle ces mouvements surviennent. The current conceptualization of the disorder divides affected individuals into subtypes, with the two most common being ADHD-Predominantly Inattentive and ADHD-Combined (inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity).
