Intonation in singing is a complex phenomenon that has received only limited empirical attention in the literature to date. Previous studies have observed that singers do not conform to either equal temperament or any other fixed-intonation system. However, none of these studies have explored whether singers' intonation practices are systematically related to musical context. Ce type de cancer représente la principale forme de tumeur intraoculaire maligne au sein de la population adulte, comprenant approximativement 5% de tous les cas de mélanome diagnostiqués. Macrophages are the first line of defense against microbial pathogens; they recognize microbial structures and products via surface receptors (Fc, C3b, SR, TLR) and intracellular antigen sensors (NLR family). Engagement of surface receptors results in phagocytosis of the microbe into a specialized vacuole, the phagosome. Through a series of fusogenic events, the phagosome matures into a fully microbicidal phagolysosome that is highly acidic and contains a number of degradative enzymes and toxic molecules that cause destruction of the microbe. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may be understood as a failure of the mechanisms for psychological recovery following trauma. Thus, examination of the recovery process is critical for an understanding of PTSD. This thesis addressed this issue from a neural perspective. Functional and structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was employed to examine brain activity and structure in severely symptomatic PTSD patients at the beginning of therapy (Time 1) and then six-to-nine months later (Time 2), when the majority no longer met diagnostic criteria for the disorder. Following the collapse of the Soviet regime, the post-communist states of Central and Eastern Europe faced the distinct issue of socialist propaganda permeating the public landscapes. In three unique cases, political elites in Russia, Lithuania, and Hungary established "statue parks" in order to formally display and contain a collection of communist statuary that previously stood in public streets. By doing so, the creators of the parks altered the ideological meaning attached to these monuments and reconstructed historical narratives about the communist past, while also providing an interesting destination for curious tourists. L'objectif de cette recherche était d'examiner la possibilité d'utiliser le dioxyde de carbone (CO2) des gaz d'échappement d'un système de chauffage à la biomasse afin d'enrichir les serres en CO2 et favoriser le rendement des cultures. Infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). One factor contributing to the increased infection risk is glucocorticoid (GC) therapy.The risk of infection associated with GC therapy in patients with RA is addressed in two manuscripts for submission. The first is a systematic review and meta-analysis of GC-associated infection risk from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies. Summary estimates of risk ranged from no increased risk (RCTs) to a two-fold increased risk (observational studies). Reasons for the discrepancy are discussed. Based on the technical and societal characteristics of this type of data, it argues in favour of the necessity to secure access to it. The distinction between moderate and heavy precipitation during the warm-season involves subtle differences in the combination of lifting mechanisms, moisture supply, and atmospheric stability. Such subtle differences make forecasting heavy precipitation events particularly challenging. We address this challenge with a multi-scale study of particularly extreme warm-season events at Montréal, a station located in the Saint Lawrence River Valley. We find that quasi-geostrophic forcing for ascent is a significant contributor to heavy warm-season precipitation in Montréal. The primary objective of this study was to predict the consequences of climate change on agriculture. This thesis explores the ways in which the art museum as a powerful cultural medium shapes the public understanding of artworks and how this work is affected by digital media when the museum displays art online. In an analysis of the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) I focus on how the artwork is encountered and understood in physical and digital contexts through the examination of three modes of museum practice: memory, information, and narrative. As such, it is a lead structure in the development of new cancer drugs. Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus (TNDM) is a rare congenital disorder of the pancreas. The multidimensional construct of body image is an established risk factor related to numerous maladaptive outcomes. Examining the role of the body in self-destructive behaviours, Orbach (1996) theorized that negative bodily experiences and attitudes reduce self-preservative attitudes, and foster the development of detachment and hatred associated with the body, facilitating the likelihood of engaging in self-destructive behaviours. Orbach's theoretical perspective has been validated among self-destructive acts such as disordered eating behaviours, suicidal ideation, and suicidal behaviours. Informed by social theorist Pierre Bourdieu's work on fields of cultural production, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the competing ways in which scribal agents have attempted to shape and lay claim to the wedlock trope for the purpose of legitimating their theopolitical interests. The wedlock trope speaks to a very real and authoritative conception of order in the ancient world. Scribes considered this order self-evident and 'natural.' The wedlock trope participates in this underlying world-view of order. It follows the nutritional discourses of doctors, governmental agencies, home economics experts and food corporations. Through the examination of diet and food advice, the thesis identifies values and prescriptive ideals in order to relate them to dominant ideologies and explain their impact on municipal, provincial and federal policies. The reverse transcriptase (RT) enzyme of human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) is an RNA- and DNA-dependent DNA polymerase that also exhibits RNase H activity. The polymerase and RNase H active sites of RT are structurally linked through the connection domain. RT is a major antiretroviral target but the development of viral resistance often leads to therapy failure. The partial replacement of conventional plants with modern wind plants may cause system frequency regulation to fall below acceptable levels, especially in isolated power systems. Prostate cancer (PCa) is among leading causes of cancer related mortalities in the western world. Patient's death is attributed to androgen-refractory tumor cells that survive chemotherapy. Underlying molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. The host laboratory reported on the role of the Fer tyrosine kinase in the survival and growth of PCa cells. Fer is over-expressed and localized in the cell nucleus of more aggressive prostate tumors in comparison to normal tissues.
