2013 — Novel genetic and molecular regulation of HDL metabolism
    Abstract

Read more

2013 — Freeing philosophy from metaphysics: Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī's philosophical approach to the study of natural phenomena
    Abstract

2013 — An energy-efficient and load-balancing cluster-based routing protocol for wireless sensor networks
    Abstract

Clustering is a popular routing technique in configuring Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). It can determine the communications between all nodes to collect data in an efficient manner. It handles the main challenge of energy-efficiency in WSNs, and can be used to re-configure the network according to changes in the nodes' conditions. This thesis contributes to the routing in WSNs by proposing an Energy-efficient and Load-balancing Cluster-based (ELC) routing algorithm for Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA)-based WSNs. In particular, both distance and residual energy are taken into consideration in developing the cluster-head selection procedure while ensuring that the network has a …  Read more

2013 — Charge transfer in graphene monolayer transistor with SiO2 and Si3N4 dielectric
    Abstract

Read more

2013 — The influence of lexical biases and prosodic information during online interpretation of ambiguous pronouns
    Abstract

…  Read more

2013 — Investigations into the effects of xylomannan-based sugar compounds on methane hydrate kinetics
    Abstract

Over the past two decades, the focus of industrial research into hydrate inhibition has shifted from hydrate prevention to hydrate management, with emphasis on the development of environmentally-friendly, low-dosage kinetic inhibitors. The purpose of this work was to measure the effects of four naturally occurring polysaccharides on structure I methane gas hydrate nucleation and growth kinetics and to assess their application to industrial-type systems. These compounds were selected based on the xylomannan sugar found in the Alaskan beetle Upis Ceramboides that afforded 3.7°C of thermal hysteresis (Walters et al., 2009). Experiments conducted at 275.15K and pressures of 4645 and 5645 …  Read more

2013 — The intrinsic generation and flow of rhythmic activity in the hippocampus
    Abstract

Read more

2013 — Impact of genetic and nutritional disturbances in one-carbon metabolism on brain function and structure in mice
    Abstract

2013 — Roles of nucleocapsid proteins and 5' TAR in HIV-1 genomic RNA dimerization
    Abstract

Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) genomic RNA (gRNA) dimerization appears essential for viral infectivity via, among others, facilitating gRNA strand exchange during reverse transcription, but the gRNA dimerization mechanisms remain largely unknown. What is well known about gRNA dimerization is that the dimerization process requires the proteolytic processing of Pr55gag polyprotein into smaller products. If the gag processing is blocked experimentally, it will lead to the formation of low-mobility dimers which is termed immature dimers, as apposed to high-mobility dimers (mature dimers) formed in the wild type HIV-1. Two kinds of dimers have been isolated from HIV-1 particles: Immature …  Read more

Through a critical engagement with the family law modernization framework, this thesis argues for the need to take more seriously the internal and global jurisdictional issues that can arise from top-down, women-centred family law reform. It argues that the problem with the family law modernization thesis lies in its close relationship with the law and development school of thought, which endorses images of consensus, unity and uniformity with respect to family law reform. As an example, this thesis uses a broad political lens first to tease out how family law reforms adopted in Mexico City between 2000 and 2009 were …  Read more

Drawing on multi-scale, ethnographic research, it focuses in particular on the role of institutions, such as government departments and community-based organizations, in mediating between different understandings of change. Inuit knowledge is increasingly transmitted through land-based programs and supported by grant funding from outside the community. I argue that adaptation to climate change is therefore as much about understanding how to work within political and institutional frameworks as it is about responding to changes in the local environment. Many adults assume children are colour-blind, but the research literature indicates a rise in prejudice in young children between the ages of 4 and 8 years, which then declines after. As prejudice can have detrimental effects on children's intergroup relations and academic performance, interventions that address it early on are pivotal. The present studies examine the effectiveness of two interventions to improve attitudes towards Black children in young children between the ages of 4 and 8 years, for whom previous interventions have been largely unsuccessful. Reasons for the failure of previous interventions include the lack of sophistication of the theories …  Read more

Studying, diagnosing, and treating diseases are all becoming reliant on our ability to introduce drugs and genes into cells. Using an impinging inert gas jet promises to avoid the severe health risks associated with viral and chemical delivery, while also maintaining a low cost. This approach relies on applying a shear stress on the cellular membrane that will temporarily disrupt the membrane, allowing for macromolecules to passively diffuse into the cell. Work done at McGill University identified a range of gas dynamic pressures that cause temporary cell permeabilization for the specific setup used. This setup has been replicated to quantify …  Read more

Biological invasions are a major component of global environmental change and are increasing in frequency. Most community-level impact studies of invasions are concerned with interactions between exotic and native species. However, interactions among exotic species are becoming increasingly common, potentially altering their respective impacts on invaded ecosystems. This research identifies one possible outcome of such interactions: the growing phenomenon of 'exotic species replacement', whereby a newly arriving exotic species surpasses the abundance of a functionally similar incumbent exotic species. This phenomenon is explored here using two Eurasian dreissenid bivalves that invaded the St. Lawrence River in the early 1990s, the …  Read more

    Abstract

Spontaneous or self-heating of sulphides can occur under certain conditions of moisture, temperature and oxygen concentration. This can lead to emission of toxic gases such as SO2 and if uncontrolled, to ignition. Research has established that self-heating divides into three stages: A (below 100 oC), B (above 100 oC) and C (above 350 oC). The understanding is that conditions in stage A promote oxidation of sulphides to elemental sulphur which in stage B oxidizes to SO2. A standard test based on air injections is used to measure stage A and stage B self-heating. In this thesis, a mitigation method using …  Read more

Many natural signals of practical interest are inherently sparse (or at least highly compressible) in an appropriate basis. This is often true of Fourier and wavelet-based decompositions of images and audio, and the number of applications based on these transforms is a testament to this fact. These representations are important because a) they are typically parsimonious; and, b) they highlight the important signal information in terms of salient parameters. Interest in sparsity has steadily grown over the past several years, namely due to the large number of successful applications based on sparse signal processing, e.g., inpainting, denoising, and compressive sensing. …  Read more
