2013 — Quantum transport modeling with GPUs.Abstract
In this thesis, we have developed a parallel GPU accelerated code for carrying out transport calculations within the Non-Equilibrium Green's Function (NEGF) framework using the Tight-Binding (TB) model. We also discuss the theoretical, modelling, and computational issues that arise in this implementation. We demonstrate that a heterogenous implementation with CPUs and GPUs is superior to single processor, multiple processor, and massively parallel CPU-only implementations. The GPU-Matlab Interface (GMI) developed in this work for use in our NEGF-TB code is not application specific and can be used by researchers in any field without previous knowledge of GPU programming or multi-threaded programming. … Read more

2013 — 'Being not alone in the world', .exploring reader responses to crossover booksAbstract
When contemporary readers, both young and old, claim "crossover books" such as Harry Potter, Twilight, and The Hunger Games as their own (Beckett, 2009; Falconer, 2009), they subvert socially constructed borders that segregate child and adulthood (James & Prout, 1997; Jenks, 1996). Some adults are perplexed and alarmed by this culture-sharing, because it challenges the dominant perception that child and adulthood are, and should remain, distinct states (Danesi, 2003; Postman, 1982). In this dissertation, I identify cross-reading as a critical practice that can encourage intergenerational connections by illuminating a continuum of experience between life stages and facilitating community and conversation … Read more

2013 — Estimating evolutionary rates using discrete morphological characters: a case study with birdsAbstract
The rate of evolution is a fundamental unifying concept in evolutionary biology and sets the stage for the investigation of genotypic, phenotypic and taxonomic biodiversity. This thesis specifically examined the rate of phenotypic evolution using discrete morphological characters, which are relatively understudied for this purpose compared to continuously-valued characters and traits. I first focused on heterogeneity in rates among characters in phylogenetic analysis. I used Bayesian model selection tools and 77 matrices of discrete morphological characters to show that a) models incorporating rate-heterogeneity among characters in phylogenetic analysis were preferred over equal-rates models in 80–88% of matrices, suggesting rate heterogeneity … Read more

2013 — Preposture, PostpostureAbstract
Preposture, Postposture is a seventeen-minute piece for four violins, viola, two celli, contrabass, electric guitar, two percussionists and live electronics. The title references the work's form, which alternates two dichotomous types of music; one calm, and the other, cacophonous. One type predominates earlier in the piece, while the other type gains prominence later in the piece. Sharply contrasting approaches to the role of the electronics and style of orchestration distinguish the two musical types; these distinct approaches are conveyed to the performers through design elements of the score. is thesis comprises three volumes: volume one is a written analysis of … Read more

2013 — Heme Oxygenase-1/sterol interactions in Alzheimer's diseaseAbstract
Read more

2013 — Egg protein interactions with phenolic compounds: effect on protein propertiesAbstract
Interactions of egg proteins (ovalbumin, conalbumin, egg white proteins, and egg yolk proteins) with selected phenolic compounds (flavone, chrysin, quercetin, and rutin) in aqueous media were examined by electrophoresis and fluorescence spectrophotometry. SDS-PAGE and native-PAGE results showed variable changes on the electrophoretic behaviour of egg white proteins in the presence of quercetin, while conalbumin-phenolic reaction products showed interactions under non-reducing conditions only. Fluorescence quenching technique was used to investigate the nature of egg protein-phenolic interactions and to estimate the effect of glycosylation and hydroxylation of phenolic compounds on the affinity to egg proteins. Stern-Volmer data revealed that the mechanism of … Read more

2013 — Advancements in the synthesis of oligoribonucleotides on solid support and in solution: Ionic soluble supports, blockmer ribonucleotide amidites, and orthogonal linkersAbstract
This thesis is focused on the investigation of synthetic approaches for the preparation of oligonucleotides in solution. We describe our efforts to produce these valuable molecules in a more cost effective manner relative to the current industrial standards employing solid supported synthesis. We demonstrate that an ionic tag supported synthesis technique can be successfully applied to oligonucleotide synthesis using a phosphonium-based ionic tag, using simple precipitation and phase separation methods without the need for chromatography to obtain reasonably high product purity at each step. We also explore the optimization of the technique as it is moved to the gram scale … Read more

2013 — Reflection and revision in the novels of Frances BurneyAbstract
"Reflection and Revision in the Novels of Frances Burney" constitutes the only comprehensive portrait of this major author as novelist at work (active 1778-1832), incorporating analysis of her revisions in manuscripts, proofs, and subsequent editions. Burney's Evelina, Cecilia, and Camilla are among a very small number of eighteenth-century novels with surviving manuscript drafts. The term "revision" is thus essential for my study, and I use it to describe Burney's process of composition, which is closely connected to the other key term in my study, "reflection." Reflection, a reflexive act often synonymous with self-awareness, is an important characteristic of the novel … Read more

2013 — Filling the gap: the role of sub-national government networks in a multi-level global climate change regimeAbstract
This thesis questions the contemporary perception of climate change governance as a purely international responsibility, to be primarily addressed by multilateral negotiations of nation states. An engagement with the geographic theory of scale demonstrates sub-national governments' (SNG) role in the governance of local causes and effects of climate change. SNG networks are an emerging actor in climate change governance, as SNGs have grouped together to tackle climate change collectively. This thesis considers the value of these SNG networks in influencing the laws and policies of their members, as well as the international regime. More broadly, the membership of SNG networks … Read more

2013 — Rapid solidification of an aluminum-lithium alloy for solid freeform fabrication applicationsAbstract
The solidification behavior of an Aluminum-Lithium-Copper (Al-Li-Cu) alloy, AA2199, and the microstructural morphology and solute distributions resulting from three rapid solidification processing techniques were investigated. Controlled-Short-Circuiting Metal-Inert-Gas (CSC-MIG) welding, Laser Re-melting (LRM), and Electrospark Deposition (ESD) were investigated. The morphology of the rapidly solidified material was then compared with the Kurz-Giovanola-Trivedi (KGT) model for microstructural development during rapid solidification, to allow for the estimation of the solidification front velocity (SFV) realized during processing. This SFV was then compared with that required for non-equilibrium solute partitioning as predicted by the Continuous Growth Model (CGM) of Aziz. The solute distributions where then … Read more

2013 — QoS- aware power allocation and frequency provisioning for multicarrier wireless systemsAbstract
This thesis studies and develops quality-of-service (QoS)-aware power allocation and frequency provisioning schemes for multicarrier wireless systems in a frequency-selective fading environment. We first develop an optimal subcarrier power allocation algorithm to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of a single-user multicarrier link under delay-outage probability constraints, where EE is defined as the ratio of the achieved effective capacity (EC) to the total expenditure power. Specifically, we formulate the QoS-driven EE maximization problem and show that its objective function is quasi-concave in the transmission power, and as a result, derive the global optimum solution using fractional programming. The developed optimal power … Read more

2013 — The anti-inflammatory potential of vitamin D in cystic fibrosisAbstract
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a fatal genetic disorder characterized by chronic inflammation in the airways, involving an accumulation of neutrophils induced by increased production of interleukin (IL)-8 by pulmonary macrophages and airway epithelial cells. Increased airway inflammation leads to progressive lung damage and early death in patients with CF. There is a need for more specific therapies targeting sources of airway inflammation in CF. Vitamin D deficiency is frequent in the CF population, affecting up to 95% of patients. Serum vitamin D levels have been shown to positively correlate with lung function, and negatively correlate with inflammation and infection. Restoring … Read more

2013 — Ethnic diversity and out-group approval in Germany: a test of the contact hypothesisAbstract
This paper analyzes the effect that ethnic diversity has on out-group approval and how inter-group contact mediates this relationship. Out-group approval is defined as the extent to which native Germans readily accept the existence of out-groups in German society. The indicators of this include diversity beliefs, support for building mosques, out-group trust, generalized trust, and ethno-centrism. I test this relationship using the DivCon survey, carried out by the MaxPlanck Institute in Germany. Using multi-level regression models, I find that neighbourhood diversity is not negatively related to out-group approval, but both weak-ties and strong-ties inter-group approval do mediate this relationship. I … Read more

Read more

2013 — Targeting antibiotic resistance through a versatile pantetheine scaffold: pantetheine derivatives as AAC(6')-Ii resistance inhibitors and novel pantothenamide antibacterial agentsAbstract
Read more

Parental care during the postnatal period has a major role in emotional development of the offspring. In the biparental species, the California mouse (Peromyscus californicus), both the father and the mother have a highly participative role in the postnatal care of pups. Previous studies have shown that if the father is removed, the mother does not compensate for his absence, thus the pups are deficient in care. Here we present results obtained after evaluating the emotional behavior and serotonin (5-HT) neurotransmission of adult California mice after father separation. Read more

2013 — Damping due to attachment losses in microresonatorsAbstract
Microresonators are crucial components of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) used for communicating and sensing. One of the main objectives while designing microresonators is to minimize all sources of energy dissipation leading to damping. This thesis focuses primarily on dissipation at the points of attachment of the microresonator to the larger supporting frame, package, and test setup. The sources of such attachment losses include stress-wave radiation at the supports and stick-slip friction at the clamps. In the absence of accurate models for all such sources, it becomes necessary to analyze attachment losses by using the limits of thermoelastic damping for calibration. The … Read more
