    Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) is a small retrovirus that highly depends on the host cell machinery to replicate by completing its lifecycle and producing new infectious viral particles. The complexity of HIV-1 life cycle regulation only reflects the diversity of the virus-host interactions. Cellular helicases are enzymes involved in every step of nucleic acid metabolism, through rearranging ribonucleoprotein complexes. His critical editions and personally-annotated scores reveal a similar approach, where only the universal structure of a piece—attained through analysis and a consideration of the composer's intentions—should inform performance. Schenker's restrictions on the performer's agency and personal interpretation stand opposed to current scholarship, where a reciprocal and equal relationship between performers and analysts is central.     Ralph Adams Cram (1863–1942) was among the rare Gothicists who practiced both Gothic architecture and literature. He designed several Gothic-Revival churches and campuses across North America, and he wrote a book of Gothic ghost stories in 1895, calling the collection Black Spirits and White. Traditionally, scholars have assumed that the discourses of modern, Anglo-Gothic architecture and literature parted company after the 1830s.     This thesis offers analyses of two of Michael Haneke's most provocative films, *Funny Games US,* and *The Piano Teacher.* Contrary to the popular critical conclusion that Haneke is a cinematic sadist, this thesis argues that the aesthetics and thematic concerns of his films are best understood through the dynamics of masochism, not sadism.     Zellweger spectrum disorder (ZSD) is due to defects in any one of 13 PEX proteins, encoded by PEX genes, which are required for peroxisome biogenesis. ZSD features neurologic, hepatic and renal abnormalities; however, one common mutation, PEX1-p.Gly843Asp (G843D), confers a milder phenotype and represents 30% of all ZSD alleles. Thus, identifying treatments for this allele will benefit many patients. Fieldwork took place in May 2008 in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and June-July 2010 in the Rocky Mountains at sites in Colorado, Wyoming, and Alberta.
