Grâce à des avancées considérables, notamment la co-administration de la bléomycine, étoposide et cisplatine (BEP) qui suit l'orchidectomie, le taux de guérison atteint aujourd'hui plus de 90%. Songbirds use vocal signals for social communication. Song can be produced in a variety of social contexts, and previous studies have demonstrated that the structure and organization of song significantly changes across social contexts. However, little is known about the neural circuits and neurotransmitters that contribute to the social modulation of song. Here we combine behavioural, immunocytochemical, and pharmacological experiments to reveal the mechanisms underlying context-dependent changes to syllable sequencing and structure in Bengalese finches. This thesis develops a moral theory of secession grounded in a right of nations to self-determination based on the intrinsic and instrumental value of the nation. Using a reconciliatory approach to theory-building which combines the strengths of both ideal and nonideal theory, the thesis outlines the moral grounds underlying a right to secession, identifying the agents that can legitimately claim such a right, and examining its institutionalization in domestic and international law. This dissertation examines the formation and milieu of a group of artists working in Chicago after the Second World War, known as the “Monster Roster.” It argues that this group was marginalized in large part because the grotesque and vulnerable bodies often depicted in its artists’ work were incompatible with the dominant trend of abstraction in postwar American art and art history, as well as the national political project of solidifying the United States’ reputation as a powerful, liberating force on the global stage. Glutathione is an important cellular molecule for its antioxidant abilities and has a role in multidrug resistance. Literature has attempted to quantify glutathione using a variety of techniques and has shown conflicting results of glutathione content between chemotherapeutic sensitive and resistant cell lines. The purpose of this study was to develop a universal method of glutathione quantification in HeLa and multidrug resistant variant HeLa cells in order to establish the relationship between glutathione content and multidrug resistance via multidrug resistance associated protein-1 membrane transporters. E138K, a G→A mutation in the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) reverse transcriptase (RT), is preferentially selected by etravirine (ETR) and rilpivirine (RPV) over other substitutions at position E138 that offer greater drug resistance. We hypothesized that there was a mutational bias for the E138K substitution and designed an allele-specific PCR to monitor the emergence of E138A/G/K/Q/R/V during ETR or RPV selection experiments. E138K, as well as E138G, consistently emerged first during selection experiments, followed by E138A, E138Q and E138R. Religious communities have marked the history of Montreal since its founding in 1642, playing a key role in the shaping and developing of the current Montreal landscape and urban form.This research examines and analysizes one such community, the Hôtel-Dieu, by identifying the functional characteristics of its gardens for the period between 1861 and 1945, such as the production of edible and medicinal plants and the provision of a certain financial autonomy for the regular operations of the community and the hospital.The study finds that the Hôtel-Dieu shows an important recycling potential, thanks in part to the increasing interest urban residents …  Read more

In 2011, an estimated 3 million children died in their first four weeks of life. The majority of these neonatal deaths are avoidable if effective low-cost interventions, such as clean delivery practices, exclusive breastfeeding, and newborn resuscitation are available. However, these interventions are clearly not reaching many of the women and newborns who need them most. A major challenge is how best to expand access to essential obstetric and newborn interventions, particularly among disadvantaged populations and in areas with poor access to health services. It is well established that a river's natural flow regime is a key determinant of ecological integrity and that dam regulated-flow releases can in some cases be detrimental to biotic communities (e.g. Poff and Zimmerman, 2010). To improve the understanding of the long-term effect of forest potassium (K)-fertilization, I revived a 23-year-old base cation fertilization experiment in a sugar maple stand in southern Quebec (45°59.6'N 73°59.9'W). My main objectives were to determine (i) the long-term percent of K derived from fertilizer in the soil-plant system using the rubidium (Rb)/K reverse tracer method, (ii) if fertilization had altered the diversity of the understory plant community, and (iii) if there was still an effect on the growth and nutrient status of the sugar maple trees. In the symbiotic association between S. meliloti and its plant host, the nutrient exchange from plant to bacteroid is in the form of C4-dicarboxylic acids such as malate. These compounds directly enter the TCA cycle and the derived energy is used for the nitrogen-fixation process. Malate dehydrogenase (mdh), the two subunits of succinyl-CoA synthetase (sucCD), and two of the three subunits of 2-oxoglutarate dehydrogenase (sucAB) are encoded as an operon with the order mdh-sucCDAB. A major problematic concerning Goethe's West-östlicher Divan is the possibility of a mystical interpretation of this cycle of poetry. Opinions regarding this issue range over a wide spectrum, covering the extremes of a total rejection of such an interpretation and a thoroughly Christological/Christian reading. Though general protein synthesis or mRNA translation has been well described, selective translation of subsets of mRNAs, remains ambiguous. The objective of this thesis was to study the recently described 4EHP-GIGYF2-ZNF598 translational repressor complex. This study sought to characterize the interaction between 4EHP and GIGYF2 using Isothermal Titration Calorimetry. Finally, this study describes the purification of the structured regions of novel ZNF598 protein and shows its interacting region with GIGYF2. Since water vapor plays an important role in the atmosphere, many different instruments capable of measuring quantities of vapor are available to atmospheric scientists. One such instrument is the microwave radiometer that can measure low-resolution profiles of water vapor. However, in the case of boundary layer and convective initiation studies, the resolution requirements by the scientific community are more demanding than what the instrumentation is currently capable of providing. As the international investment regime, bolstered by the powerful process of investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS), continues to expand into and gain influence in distant corners of domestic environment governance, the pressure points created where the investment regime comes into conflict with environmental regulation have also multiplied. Reinforcement learning covers a broad category of control problems in which the learning agent interacts with the environment in order to learn to maximize the collected utility. Such exploratory interaction is often costly, encouraging sample-efficient algorithms to be used in the process. The Neoarchean was a time of enhanced continental crust formation and wide-spread mafic magmatism related to global mantle melting. Mafic and ultramafic intrusions were emplaced across a large portion of the Ungava craton of the Northeast Superior Province, synchronous with the crystallization of large volumes of ca. 2.74-2.70 Ga intermediate to felsic plutonic rocks. The ca. 2.72-2.70 Ga mafic/ultramafic intrusions are locally known as the Qullinaaraaluk, Chateguay and Couture plutonic suites, and are herein referred to as the Q-suite. The following thesis is an examination of the way Seneca constructs Phaedra, the main character of an eponymous tragedy. It aims to prove that the tragedian uses a mixing of mainly two literary genres, tragedy and elegy, and it analyzes the way the elegiac genre is transformed so it can fit this new generic hybrid. Seneca finds inspiration for the elegiac topoi in Ovid's love poems. Using point processes to model neural spike sequences allows the application of classical estimation techniques in their analysis. Estimation of the time varying rate at which spikes occur is often conducted to draw inference on the stimulus which triggered the response. Such estimation schemes are often founded on the assumption that spiking follows Poisson statistics, however, the observed firing rate is a product of both the stimulus and bio-physical properties of the neuron. This dissertation seeks to account for the consolidation of the indigenous women's movement in Mexico. It examines the dynamics of this movement through a sub-national comparative analysis of three states—Chiapas, Oaxaca and Guerrero—that vary in terms of movement consolidation. While the indigenous women's movement is consolidated in Oaxaca and Guerrero, it is not in Chiapas. In order to explain this sub-national variation, this thesis combines an intersectional approach in feminist studies with the political process model in social movement studies.
