    Abstract

    The Planar Cell Polarity (PCP) signaling pathway is crucial for tissue morphogenesis. Vangl2 protein is central in the PCP pathway: its loss is embryonic lethal causing neural tube defects in mice and humans. In the kidney, PCP signaling is thought to be important for the organization of glomerular epithelial cells, podocytes, along the glomerular basement membrane. Podocyte cell protrusions, foot processes (FPs), are critical for kidney filtration functions; loss of FP architecture results in proteinuria and, in severe cases, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS).     2014 — Nano-scale Surface Wrinkling in Chiral Liquid Crystals and Plant-based Plywoods
    Abstract

    We present theoretical scaling and computational analysis of nano-structured free surfaces formed in chiral liquid crystals (LC) and plant-based twisted plywoods. A nemato-capillary model is used to derive a generalized equation that governs the shape of cholesteric free surfaces. It is shown that the shape equation includes three distinct contributions to the capillary pressure: area dilation, area rotation, and director curvature. To analyse the periodic relief in plywood surfaces, these three pressure contributions and corresponding surface energies are systematically investigated.     The latch-state is the capacity of smooth muscle to maintain force for long periods of time with low energy consumption. The prevalent theory to explain the latch-state suggests that if myosin gets deactivated (dephosphorylated) while attached to actin, it remains attached and maintains force. Other theories suggest that dephosphorylated and detached myosin can bind to actin to maintain force and that actin regulatory proteins participate in the force maintenance.     Abstract

    PKC Apl II, a novel PKC in Aplysia californica, is required for reversal of depression, the cellular analog of behavioral dishabituation. The neurotransmitter 5HT activates PKC Apl II in sensory neurons and can induce the reversal of depression. Here we investigated the ability of 5HT to activate PKC Apl II and the molecular pathway involved. Reversal of depression can occur at concentrations as low as 1.6 μM. We observed that activation of PKC Apl II, as measured by membrane enrichment, can occur at similar concentrations (1 μM).     This thesis examines preferential diffusion effects in laminar and turbulent premixed combustion. Stretched, fuel-lean, laminar flames of methane, propane and hydrogen are studied experimentally in a counter-flow flame configuration to investigate the effect of Lewis number on stretched flames. Laminar flame results show that a maximum reference flame speed exists for mixtures with Le >= 1 at lower flame-stretch values than the extinction stretch rate.
