2018 — Human antigen R (HuR) regulates Cigarette Smoke- induced inflammation: Implications in COPDAbstract
Read more

2018 — Can the growth pattern of colorectal cancer predict the histopathological growth pattern of the liver metastasis?Abstract
Introduction:Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide. CRC liver metastases (CRCLM) is a significant clinical problem. Untreated, patients will survive for a few months only. Three CRCLM histopathological growth patterns (HGP) have been identified: 1) the desmoplastic, in which, tumors grow by neoangiogenesis with no direct contact between the tumor cells and hepatocytes 2) the pushing, in which liver cell plates are pushed aside by the growing tumor and 3) the replacement, where tumors grow by co-opting the normal hepatic vessels and the tumor cells display infiltrating pattern by replacing parenchymal cells in the liver plates. Patients … Read more

2018 — Prostate tumor heterogeneity and aggressiveness revealed via the androgen receptor expression and activation by tyrosine phosphorylationAbstract
Purpose: Prostate cancer (PCa) is among leading causes of cancer deaths in North America. To date, androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is the gold standard treatment for patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy. However, ADT invariably fails and is followed by castration resistance (CRPC) and further progression of the disease. The host lab study on signaling through the Fer tyrosine kinase in PCa has led to the identification of the androgen receptor (AR) as a Fer substrate, activated by phosphorylation on the tyrosine (Y) 223 residue, a step followed by the accumulation of Fer and activated AR … Read more

2018 — Gram-negative bacterial infection enhances the potential of gastric adenocarcinoma peritoneal metastasis via TNFR1 dependent mannerAbstract
Adenocarcinoma of the proximal stomach is the fastest rising malignancy in North America, and is associated with a high rate of recurrence to the peritoneum. As part of cancer treatment, the majority of patients undergo at least one invasive surgical procedure. Recent clinicaldata has linked postoperative infection complications with adverse oncologic outcomes;however, the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that duringinfection the release of TNFα, a key inflammatory cytokine facilitates cancer progression. The role and mechanisms of gram-negative bacterial infections in facilitating the metastaticpotential of gastric cancer to the peritoneum is unknown. We hypothesized that incubation ofgastric cancer cells or peritoneal MCs … Read more

2018 — The effects of gamification based formative assessment on motivation and vocabulary acquisition in ESL classroomAbstract
Gamification is a new concept in education, defined as the use of game-based mechanics and game thinking to engage students, motivate action, and promote learning. In this study, gamification was integrated with classroom formative assessment and produced via technology to investigate its potential to enhance motivation and learning of vocabulary as opposed to traditional paper-based formative assessment methods. As of yet, there is not much research comparing the effectiveness of technology game-based formative assessment (GBFA) and paper-based formative assessment (PBFA) to promote vocabulary learning and motivation inside second language (L2) classrooms. This study investigated whether technology GBFA can improve vocabulary … Read more

2018 — Performance and optimization of analog and digital filtering algorithms for the Phase-ll upgrade of the Hadronic End-Cap CalorimeterAbstract
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be upgraded in 2024-26 to increase its beam intensity by a factor of up to 7 from its original design value. To cope with increased interaction rates and radiation exposure at this new High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), upgrades to multiple ATLAS detector subsystems are planned to take place alongside those to the LHC's accelerator chain. In this context, a re-design of the Hadronic End-Cap (HEC) calorimeter's electronic readout chain is required in order to maintain its energy reconstruction performance at the HL-LHC. The HEC readout electronics was implemented in a simulation framework capable of … Read more

2018 — Consuming quantification and recipes for resistance digesting Canada's food guideAbstract
Read more

2018 — Knot formation on nanochannel-Confined DNA and Flow-assisted DNA disentanglement and linearizationAbstract
Inspired by the knot abundance on biopolymers such as extracted DNA from phage capsids, DNA in nanofluidic systems and proteins, we introduce a knot factory on-chip based on hydrodynamic compression of single T4 DNA molecules against barriers in nanochannels. The proposed method provides an efficient way to form knots on DNA under compression and detects the independently evolving knots during the relaxation process following the compression. We observe that knotting probability increases with pressure as well as with the waiting time in the compressed state. Moreover, we develop a free energy formalism derived from scaling arguments, which describes our experimental … Read more

2018 — Spontaneous imbalance in rotating stratified turbulenceAbstract
Whereas high-frequency waves are valid solutions to the Boussinesq equations in certain limits, their amplitudes are generally observed to be small in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic data. Traditionally, this has led to the development of balance models, reducing the dynamics to only the slow subset. Their solutions, however, can spontaneously generate imbalance in the context of the full equations. To study this phenomenon, we perform high-resolution turbulence simulations of the non-hydrostatic Boussinesq equations, starting with a high-order nonlinearly balanced initial condition. To produce this initial condition, we employ the nonlinear normal mode initialization scheme that was introduced by Baer and … Read more

2018 — Microfluidic platform for the fabrication and loading of nanoscale liposomes by 2D hydrodynamic flow focusingAbstract
This thesis aims to examine liposomes generation in microfluidic systems. As such, it presents the continuous flow formation by two dimensional hydrodynamic flow focusing (2D HFF) of nano-sized liposomes in microfluidic channels. Using our platform, different lipid size particles are generated by altering the flow rates and flow rate ratios of two miscible fluids; a central stream of DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) lipids in ethanol and an aqueous buffer. The effect of varying both the lipid composition and flow parameters for the synthesis of DPPC nano-sized liposomes within our platformwas assessed with regards to size, concentration, charge and polydispersity of the resulting … Read more

2018 — The future of flood-prone areas in Africa and Europe: predicting changing inundation patterns under climate changeAbstract
Wetlands and floodplains play an important role in a myriad of environmental services including flood and drought protection, water provision for humans and agriculture, sustainment of fisheries, water quality regulation, carbon storage, and habitat provision for a multitude of species. As a result of these important services, changes to inundated areas can have major socioeconomic and environmental consequences. In addition to continued anthropogenic degradation, global climate change is expected to pose an increasingly large threat to wetlands and floodplains in the coming century. Despite their importance, the fate of wetlands and floodplains under climate change is poorly understood at large … Read more

2018 — Performativity as critical praxis: J.L Austin, Jacques Derrida, Judith Butler, Catherine Malabou, c. 1955-2014Abstract
In the second half of the twentieth century, the concept of “performativity” came to play a leading role in academic discourse in the philosophy of language, deconstruction, queer and gender studies, art theory, and performance studies. Most recently, it has taken centre stage in the emerging interdisciplinary field of performance philosophy. Despite its ubiquity, however, performativity remains enigmatic. Accounting for the capacity of speech to bring about the action that it designates, and the processes through which identities are enacted, and meaning is produced, the concept lies somewhere in the tensions among language, embodiment, and action. As such, it is … Read more

2018 — Investigating age-related differences in functional brain activity and connectivity underlying source memory: An adult lifespan approachAbstract
Episodic memory encompasses an extraordinary range of diverse cognitive functions that are integral to daily functioning. Healthy aging is associated with declines in episodic memory, which may impair older adults' ability to remember the rich contextual details of previously experienced events. By the age of sixty, older individuals may have a reduced ability to remember spatial or temporal contextual features of past events (e.g., where or when you last took a prescription medication). Previous studies have focused on understanding the anatomical and functional neural correlates of episodic memory decline in young and older adulthood, but how these underlying mechanisms contribute … Read more

2018 — Role of FAM57B2 and Lactosylceramide in ChondrogenesisAbstract
Chondrogenesis is critical for the healing of fractured bones. After an initial inflammation stage, a "soft callus" composed of chondrocytes bridges the injury site, to be later mineralized and substituted by bone. When studying bone healing in mice deficient for Cyp24a1, which cannot synthesize the vitamin D metabolite, 24,25(OH)2D3, a significant and reproducible impairment in callus formation is observed. We used callus tissue of Cyp24a1 knockout mice to clone Fam57b2 (Family with sequence similarity 57, member B), which encodes a transmembrane protein that specifically interacts with 24,25(OH)2D3. Previous work from our laboratory revealed 24,25(OH)2D3-dependent production of lactosylceramide (LacCer) by FAM57B2. … Read more

2018 — Towards a roadmap for implementing a self-management approach for people with multiple Sclerosis in Saudi ArabiaAbstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most disabling neurological conditions affecting young adults. MS is becoming more common in Saudi Arabia where specialized health services are still being developed. Many people with MS in Saudi Arabia look for help where they can and risk getting information from unreliable sources. In such a context, self-management would be crucial for reducing the impact of MS. Success at self-management requires acknowledging the specific problems, recognizing that solutions are possible, and contextualizing self-management for the individuals within their culture. This PhD thesis aims at setting a roadmap to aid in the translation of knowledge … Read more

2018 — Developing drug and gene therapies for peroxisome biogenesis disorders of the Zellweger SpectrumAbstract
Zellweger spectrum disorder (ZSD) usually results from biallelic mutations in PEX genes required for peroxisome biogenesis. PEX1-G843D is a common hypomorphic allele associated with milder disease. We previously showed that fibroblasts from patients with a PEX1-G843D allele recovered peroxisome functions when cultured with the nonspecific chaperone betaine and flavonoid acacetin diacetate. To identify more effective flavonoids for preclinical trials, we compared 54 flavonoids using our cell-based peroxisomal assays. Diosmetin showed the most promising combination of potency and efficacy; co-treatments of diosmetin and betaine showed the most robust additive effects. This was confirmed by 5 independent assays in primary PEX1-G843D patient … Read more

2018 — New methodology to generate floor design spectra (FDS) directly from uniform hazard spectra (UHS) for seismic assessment of non-structural components (NSCs) of buildingsAbstract
Read more

2018 — Porcupine-dependent Wnt signaling in endometriosis development and maintenanceAbstract
Endometriosis is a debilitating condition that affects over 10% of women and is characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, most often in the pelvic cavity. It is thought to arise through retrograde menstruation where endometrial tissue is displaced into the peritoneal cavity where it implants and develops into lesions that can cause inflammation, tissue scarring, and it can subsequently result in pelvic pain in response to estrogen cycling. Although this disease affects a large number of women and impacts their quality of life, its underlying molecular mechanisms are not understood. Wnt signaling plays a role in … Read more

2018 — Femtosecond laser micromachining of polymer surfacesAbstract
Cependant, on … Read more

2018 — On dynamics near an idealized tropopauseAbstract
The near-tropopause energy spectrum obeys a -5/3 power law at mesoscales. Some theories accommodating this fact assume ageostrophic dynamics but ignore the abrupt stratification jump characterizing the tropopause. Alternatively, it has also been proposed that the mesoscale spectrum results from tropopause-altered geostrophic turbulence. This thesis investigates the respective roles of the stratification jump and of ageostrophic dynamics in shaping the near-tropopause flow. To do so, a numerical model is constructed that integrates the non-hydrostatic Boussinesq equations in the presence of an arbitrary stratification profile. Decaying turbulence simulations are performed over a wide range of Rossby numbers both with and without … Read more

Read more

2018 — Examining the influence of inflammatory signaling on drug-induced behavioursAbstract
Lewitus and colleagues (2016) determined that microglial tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) acts as a compensatory mechanism to limit some of the behavioural changes induced by chronic cocaine. By using a TLR4 agonist to induce cytokine production in microglia, they found that microglial activation suppresses the expression of cocaine-induced psychomotor sensitization. However, this model entails passive drug taking; examining voluntary cocaine use is more clinically relevant, as it is a hallmark symptom of addiction. In the first chapter, we hypothesized that a TLR4 agonist would reduce the motivation to self-administer cocaine. The first part of the study determined a non-toxic … Read more

2018 — Deconstructing the modern subject: negotiating identity in Pablo Picasso's « Kahnweiler» and Gertrude Stein's «Picasso»Abstract
Read more

2018 — The role of ocean heat transport on rapid sea ice declines in the Community Earth System Model Large EnsembleAbstract
Many climate models predict future rapid sea ice declines in the Arctic. These events are linked with anomalous northward Ocean Heat Transport (OHT). Using the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LE), we find that the partitioning of the poleward OHT between the different gates of the Arctic (Barents Sea Opening (BSO), Fram Strait or Bering Strait) is key to this link with the rapid declines. In total, 64 of the 79 rapid declines in CESM-LE are linked with anomalous OHT. The interaction between OHT and sea ice happens mainly over continental shelves. The Bering Strait OHT is linked to … Read more

2018 — Lessons from protein tyrosine phosphatase-pest interactome: towards a better understanding of pancreatic cancer progressionAbstract
Protein tyrosine phosphatase -PEST (PTP-PEST, PTPN12) is a cytosolic ubiquitous protein, which in addition to its PTP domains, contains five proline-rich motifs allowing its interaction with various protein complexes. PTP-PEST plays a multidimensional regulatory role in cellular motility, morphology and adhesion via its association with different substrates to control actin organization during focal adhesion turnover and formation of membrane protrusions. As recent reports showed ambivalent roles of PTP-PEST in cancers, including pancreatic cancer, and with the increasing number of PTP-PEST binding proteins, we hypothesize that distinct PTP-PEST protein complexes are at the origin of its cellular functions. Hence, we aimed … Read more

2018 — Militia and insurgency violence: The politics of sectarianism in IraqAbstract
The central research question this thesis addresses is the following: In cases where the state is weak, to what extent do sectarian identities explain the diverging and often converging objectives and strategies of various sectarian militant groups vying for political power and territorial control? In order to answer this question, this study focuses on the case of contemporary Iraq. The main argument of this thesis is that sectarian identities alone play little role in defining and determining the political objectives and military strategies pursued by various sectarian affiliated groups. I argue instead that it is the motivation of greed, which … Read more
