2018 — Old cats/new tricks: Introducing improvisation to older adult musicians
    Abstract

This research project was designed to document, examine, and analyze the experiences of older adult musicians as they participated in a series of ensemble music improvisation sessions. One of the goals of the study was to synthesize and augment the following existing bodies of research: 1) current studies demonstrating improved quality of life for retired senior citizens who routinely participate in notation-based group music making; and 2) data supporting the theory that young people who engage in ensemble improvisation activities see significant improvements in their musical skills. To carry out this study, the researcher facilitated 12 weekly 90-minute music improvisation …  Read more

2018 — Development of coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy at optical frequencies and application to model chromophores
    Abstract

Ultrafast coherent multi-dimensional spectroscopies are a powerful set of techniques used to unravel complex processes. These processes range from electronic coherences in molecular chromophores to many-body interactions in quantum-confined materials. Yet these spectroscopies remain challenging to implement at the high frequencies of vibrational and electronic transitions, thereby limiting their widespread use. The work herein demonstrates three significant methodological improvements of two-dimensional spectroscopy at optical frequencies, followed by applications of the method on two different systems. First, we introduce a hollow-fibre setup for the production of broadband visible pulses. This source is comparatively simple to operate, and yields stable, 45 μJ …  Read more

    Abstract

Read more

2018 — Overcoming resistance to targeted and non-targeted therapies with combi-molecules designed to target PARP
    Abstract

Targeting cancer cells at multiple signaling pathways has become the most common approach to sensitize them to chemotherapy. It is in this context that our laboratory developed the combi-targeting concept, that seeks to design molecules to modulate different targets. Here, to overcome resistance to both targeted and non-target therapies, we investigated two major strategies: a) enhancing the potency of a chemotherapeutic agent by combining a DNA damaging agent with a DNA repair inhibitor in a single agent, and b) targeting the DNA repair inhibitor to a receptor overexpressed in cancer cells. In the context of these strategies, we demonstrated the …  Read more

2018 — Study of multi-point interactions in PFC models for complex structural transformations
    Abstract

The phase field crystal (PFC) methodology models material solidification and other transformations through the evolution of an atomic density field driven by dissipative dynamics. PFC permits investigation of atomic scale processes on dissipative time scales. Building on past PFC methodology, we develop and characterize several new models of atomic scale material phase transformations that were not possible with previous PFC modelling approaches. This thesis makes several new contributions to PFC modelling. These are described below.First, we develop a model of magnetism in materials by extending previous models. This model couples the atomic scale PFC density field to a ferromagnetic order …  Read more

Read more

2018 — Regulation of the prostate progenitor cell fate
    Abstract

Abstract

Understanding the process by which a piece of data or information disseminates throughout a network is of great importance in many real world applications. Whether we are in charge of spreading the information or we are merely able to observe its traces, we need to model the process by which the diffusion occurs. In this thesis, we develop frameworks to model the information diffusion processes and propose multiple algorithms to both control and infer them.We first study how we can proactively control the process of diffusion of information among a set of mobile nodes in the absence of a physical …  Read more

2018 — Differentiation failure in glioblastoma: Role of RUNX:CBFB transcription factor complex
    Abstract

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant primary brain tumour with a dismal survival rate of approximately 15 months. Standard treatment includes immediate surgical resection with adjuvant chemo and radiation therapy. Patient death is attributed to the near inevitable recurrence of the tumour due to the ineffective targeting of cancer cells by all current therapies. This is thought to be due to a specific subset of tumour cells that remain after treatment called cancer stem-like cells or brain tumour initiating cells (BTICs). These cells share many properties with adult neural stem cells such as self-renewal potential and the capacity for …  Read more

2018 — The concept pf prophecy and allegorical interpretation (ta'wil) within Abu Hamid al-Ghazzali's and Maimonides' oeuvres
    Abstract

Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazzālī (1055-1111) and Rabai Mosheh ben Maimun (1138-1204), better known in English as Maimonides, share the same religiously motivated concern towards scriptural exegesis: How one ought to interpret the divine (or divinely inspired) texts when a literal reading of the passages is at odds with one's reasoning. Since they consider the intellect (al-ʿaql) to be divinely endowed as well, al-Ghazzālī and Maimonides take it upon themselves to reconcile the belief in the authority of the revealed text(s) with what each author understands by independent intellectual reasoning. Their goal is to balance the limits of faithful belief in the …  Read more

2018 — The effect of the Macdonald farm-to-school summer program on children's agricultural knowledge
    Abstract

As the world population continues to rise there is an increased movement of people to urban areas and a greater disconnect from rural life. Children living in urban centers may lack the opportunities to learn about agriculture, which affects their daily lives. Studies on elementary aged children's knowledge and understanding of agriculture demonstrate that children have a low level of agriculture literacy. Interestingly though, many of these same studies show that a great deal of children's information on agriculture is acquired outside of school. Consequently, many education researchers have advocated for the incorporation of informal (out-of-school) learning opportunities in agriculture …  Read more

Read more

    2018 — Ree Morton and feminist installation art: 1968 – 1977
    Abstract

This dissertation takes the artwork of Ree Morton (1936 – 1977) as a case study to investigate the significance of women making installation art in the United States in the 1970s. Since the 1980s, academics and institutions have foregrounded and prioritized the legacies of male artists in narratives of installation art. In reproducing these gender-biased histories many women installation artists and the wider impact of gender and feminist politics in the emergence of installation art histories have been overlooked. This study examines Morton’s practice within the proposition of “feminist installation art” between 1968 and 1977 to argue that her and …  Read more

2018 — Understanding human papillomavirus vaccination and vaccine hesitancy among Canadian parents
    Abstract

The human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of several oral and genital cancers with potentially high morbidity and mortality. Vaccines that target the oncogenic strains of HPV have been developed and licensed in Canada for girls (since 2007) and boys (since 2010). These vaccines have been proven to be safe and efficacious and have been identified as a new frontier in cancer prevention. Achieving vaccine coverage targets is important for protecting individuals as well as the health of the general population. To support HPV-related cancer prevention, all Canadian provinces and territories have now implemented universal vaccination programs. However, problematically, school-based …  Read more

2018 — Case studies in vaccine evaluation
    Abstract

Vaccines are estimated to prevent 2.5 million deaths each year. As with any public health intervention, vaccines progress through many stages of development and their evaluation must continue post-licensure. We have used case studies to highlight four key aspects of the lifecycle of vaccines: i) preclinical evaluation, ii) clinical development, iii) safety and iv) long-term effectiveness. Preclinical evaluation - We have demonstrated, for the first time, cellular immune responses to a candidate norovirus virus-like particle vaccine produced in Nicotiana benthamiana (Medicago Inc., Ste-Foy, QC). Both oral and intramuscular formulations of the vaccine elicited a proliferative response and IFNγ-producing cells in …  Read more

2018 — Lineage commitment and specification of progenitors of the caudal mesoderm
    Abstract

The development of an embryo requires the interplay of signaling molecules and transcriptional regulators during lineage specification. This is particularly true during the commitment and differentiation of the caudal mesoderm which gives rise to a complex set of tissues and organs including the tailbud, kidneys, muscles and somites. We first developed a novel primary co-culture system to study and follow differentiation of caudal mesoderm progenitors (Chapter 2). Using this powerful assay, we identified a unique population of mesodermal progenitors in the tailbud whose identity is maintained and regulated by Bmp4 signaling. Inhibiting Bmp4 in these progenitors resulted in abberant differentiation of …  Read more

2018 — Approximate hessian for accelerated convergence of aerodynamic shape optimization problems in an adjoint-based framework
    Abstract

An approximation of the Hessian matrix is developed and used to accelerate the convergence of an adjoint-based aerodynamic shape optimization framework. Exact analytical formulations of the direct-direct, adjoint-direct, adjoint-adjoint, and direct-adjoint Hessian approaches are presented and the equivalence between the adjoint-adjoint and direct-adjoint formulations is demonstrated. An approximation of the Hessian is obtained from the analytical formulation by partially solving first-order sensitivities to reduce computational time, while neglecting second-order sensitivities to ease implementation. Error bounds on the resulting approximation are presented for the first-order sensitivities through perturbation analysis and eigenvalue analysis. The proposed method is first assessed using an inverse …  Read more

2018 — Investigating the biological role of gamma-tubulin phosphorylation in spindle alignment and assembly
    Abstract

Read more

    Abstract

This project is about structural data analysis on musical scores. From a structural point of view, a score is a data object in which multi-dimensional internal relations participate in abstract musical design. The purpose of a structural analysis is to describe aspects of the shape of a score. Treating the score initially as a low-dimensional, discrete Cartesian system, we build higher-dimensional structure, increasing the quantity and dimensionality of available information about the internal relations within the score. Since there are many ways of finding structure, structural score analysis is framed as an open, descriptive exploration. Three particular constructions are described, …  Read more

2018 — Sperm histone methylation is implicated in paternal epigenetic inheritance
    Abstract

Paternal epigenetic inheritance has been described in human cohorts and animal models ranging from worm to mouse. Chemical or nutritional challenge during key developmental time points have been correlated with physiological change in future offspring that oftentimes span multiple generations. Despite these observations, the underlying molecular mechanisms of non-genetic (epigenetic) inheritance remain unknown. Recent studies have shown that sperm histones are retained at genomic regions high in CpG. Specifically, activating histone marks, such as histone H3 lysine 4 di-methylation (H3K4me2) and H3 lysine 4 tri-methylation (H3K4me3), are retained at promoters of genes with functional roles in embryonic development. Therefore, we …  Read more

The system studied is a single-input single-output differentially flat system. The exact nonlinear tracking control law is constructed ex-ploiting flatness. The approach employs a local fourth order LTI model structure that adapts overtime to best fit the measured output trajectory of the nonlinear system. The locallyfitted LTI system is then combined with a moving window …  Read more
