2024 — The development of a postgraduate family medicine artificial intelligence curriculum framework
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Mental health care with 2SLGBTQIA+ clients during COVID-19
    Abstract

Research with 2SLGBTQIA+ communities is a growing domain of interest in Canada (MHCC, 2012), yet, still considered inadequate (Waite & Denier, 2019). Research on mental health, for instance, is robust in the description of the characteristics of mental health across these populations (Filice & Meyer, 2018; Kidd et al., 2016; McIntyre et al., 2011; Veltman & Chaimowitz, 2014); however, there are insufficient initiatives investigating the kinds of care and treatment that would best serve these communities (Pachankis et al., 2022). 2SLGBTQIA+ populations are known to be negatively affected by stigma and discrimination, which impact mental health outcomes and treatment access …  Read more

2024 — A computational modeling framework for public health decision-making: Evaluating vaccine distribution strategies
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Just like other girls: socialising conventionally with the Brontës, George Eliot, and Emily Dickinson
    Abstract

In this dissertation, I develop a definition of “conventional characters” in realist fiction and a more expansive theorisation of social conventionality as a literary construct. To do so, I examine Emily Dickinson’s poems alongside six novels by her favourite Victorian writers: Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë, and George Eliot. Methodologically, I position this project against an ongoing scholarly tendency to separate formal studies of narrative and poetry, as well as the widespread critical assumption that literature’s ethical, aesthetic, and political potential primarily rests on the representation of difference. Transatlantic literatures of the nineteenth century have a particularly strong association with …  Read more

2024 — Mitochondrial dynamics and aging: conditions and molecular mechanisms by which genetic alterations of mitochondrial fission and fusion genes promotes longevity
    Abstract

Aging is the greatest risk factor for multiple chronic human pathologies, including diabetes, neurodegeneration, cancer and heart disease. Using C. elegans as a model organism, we investigate the cell and molecular mechanisms involved in longevity in order advance our understanding of the aging process and the mechanisms by which healthy aging can be promoted. While the biology of aging is incompletely understood, accumulating evidence indicates that mitochondria play a significant role in the aging process. Multiple mitochondria exist in the form of an interconnected network within a single cell, where they undergo fission, to break away from the network, or fusion, …  Read more

2024 — Improving Engagement & Inclusive Pedagogy Within High-School Music Education
    Abstract

Music education has the opportunity to give many mental, cognitive and social benefits to students, especially those in high school who may find themselves navigating challenges associated with adolescence. However, many students aren’t continuing to pursue music education post-grade nine, thereby limiting exposure to these unique benefits. Despite the strong intent of teachers to support their students, opportunities may be missed for teachers to truly understand what motivates their students to stay connected to music. My research aims to fill the gap in Ontario high school engagement research by exploring the engagement needs and trends across a schoolboard in Niagara. …  Read more

2024 — The Sex-Dependent Role of the RNA-Binding Protein (RBP) HuR in the Differentiation of Myf5+ Progenitor Cells into Skeletal Muscle and Brown Fat.
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Characterization of Sod1 knockout mouse embryonic fibroblasts
    Abstract

Sod1 encodes a superoxide dismutase, the only type of enzyme that directly converts superoxide into hydrogen peroxide, both of which are reactive oxygen species. In humans, the dysregulation of this enzyme has been associated with many diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, heart failure, cancer, diabetes, Down’s syndrome, and Parkinson’s disease. Although germline Sod1 knockout mice (Sod1−/−) displayed an accelerated muscle atrophy with age, a ~30% reduction in lifespan, and an increased incidence of liver cancer, their phenotype is milder than what would have been expected from the central roles played by SOD1. Sod1 is highly conserved between species from …  Read more

2024 — Beyond abstract morality: towards a Hegelian conception of solidarity
    Abstract

This thesis explores the topic of solidarity as understood in political theory and Hegelian thought, building on Rahel Jaeggi’s work on solidarity as cooperation. Across various works, analyses of solidarity frequently situate it as a matter of abstract moral obligation or universal human rights. Focusing on the question of why solidarity matters at all, I suggest that there exist possibilities in the Hegelian tradition of modern political philosophy that merits careful attention. Drawing on this tradition, I argue that support for liberatory struggles is intrinsically valuable in ways that abstract claims for universal human rights do not capture. I further …  Read more

2024 — Regulation and functional inference of alternative polyadenylation
    Abstract

More than half of mammalian genes express alternative polyadenylation (APA) transcript isoforms that differ solely in the 3’ untranslated regions (3’UTRs) by utilizing alternative poly(A) signals (PASs). This thesis investigates the regulation of APA, as well as its impact on transcript stability and expression across mammalian cell lines and mouse cancer model systems. The functions of 3’UTRs arise from the dynamic interplay between their encoded cis-regulatory elements and a diverse network of RNA-binding proteins, microRNAs, and their effectors. Inclusion and exclusion of cis-regulatory elements through APA can thus have a broad impact on post-transcriptional regulation of mRNA stability, translatability, and …  Read more

2024 — Transferrin receptors 1 and 2 are dispensable for iron supply to hepatocytes
    Abstract

Iron is essential for many biological processes, including but not limited to oxygen transport and erythropoiesis. However, iron is toxic in excess due to its ability to catalyze a propagation of free radicals associated with cellular damage. Circulating iron is bound by its carrier transferrin, maintaining a redox-inert state, and facilitating iron internalization into tissue cells via ubiquitously expressed transferrin receptor 1 (Tfr1, gene name: Tfrc). Transferrin receptor 2 (Tfr2), a Tfr1 homologue, is primarily expressed in hepatocytes and has a ~25-fold lower affinity for transferrin-bound iron. Its main function involves sensing of iron levels and signaling to the iron …  Read more

2024 — Examining and modelling alpha-synuclein spreading and pathology using mouse and computational models of synucleinopathy
    Abstract

Synucleinopathies, such Parkinson's disease (PD), like all neurodegenerative disorders, present a significant health burden globally. Synucleinopathies manifest with a spectrum of motor, as well as non-motor symptoms, attributed to the accumulation of misfolded alpha-synuclein (aSyn) protein first observed postmortem in the brains of suffering patients. However, the exact mechanisms underlying brain atrophy and disease progression remain elusive, but evidence suggests aSyn spreads in a prion-like manner throughout the brain, contributing to the Lewy pathology in the brain. Despite these advancements in understanding aSyn spreading, its translation to atrophy and clinical symptoms remains unclear. This thesis investigates the hypothesized prion-like aSyn …  Read more

2024 — Western European or Oriental? Armenian “Western Art Music” and the Influence of Folksong at the Fin-de-Siècle
    Abstract

This dissertation addresses the roles that Armenian, French, and Russian musicians and music scholars played in shaping ideas about “authentic” Armenian music during the fin-de-siècle (1880s to the 1920s). I argue that their efforts, which involved analyzing and repositioning Armenian folk music, resulted in codifying what many may recognize today as Armenian art music. Their work unfolded in specific homeland and diaspora contexts. Both Armenians and non-Armenians in the group were motivated by the concept of national music in the final decades of the Ottoman and Russian Empires (respectively dissolving in 1922 and 1917). Given the Armenian nation’s geographical proximity …  Read more

This thesis contains five manuscripts concerning various problems in structural graph theory and graph searching. The problems all concern sparse graphs, either graphs with forbidden minors, with bounded maximum degree, or trees.First, we consider two variants of Hadwiger's conjecture on the chromatic number. Hadwiger's conjecture states that the number of colours required to properly colour the vertices of a graph (that is, adjacent vertices receive different colours) is at most the order of the largest complete graph we can obtain by contracting edges and deleting vertices (we call the obtained graph a minor of the original graph). Our variants are …  Read more

2024 — Connecting functionality to conformational dynamics in class II Lanthipeptide Synthetases and characterizing a novel Lanthipeptide Cluster using Mass Spectrometry-based approaches
    Abstract

Lanthipeptides are a family of ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptide (RiPP) natural products that originate as genetically encoded precursor peptides (LanAs) and undergo multistep modification catalyzed by lanthipeptide synthetases. Class II lanthipeptide synthetases (LanM enzymes) catalyze the dehydration of multiple serine/threonine residues in the LanA precursor peptide, followed by the intramolecular addition of cysteine thiols onto the nascent dehydration sites to construct multiple thioether bridge macrocycles. LanMs utilize two separate active sites in an iterative, yet highly coordinated manner, and maintain a remarkable level of regio- and stereochemical control over the multiple macrocyclization events. This biosynthetic fidelity is thought …  Read more

2024 — Exploring How Health Care Providers Define Phenotypic Features in Children: A Survey Study
    Abstract

Purpose: It is estimated that 10% of children with cancer have a cancer predisposition syndrome (CPS). CPSs are genetic conditions that increase the probability of developing cancer throughout life. Over 50 CPSs exist, many associated with a spectrum of non-cancer phenotypic features, such as congenital anomalies (CAs). The presence of CAs in oncology patients might raise suspicion for a CPS but might also be unrelated. While CAs may help clinicians suspect CPSs, existing approaches to identify and classify CAs differ, leading to heterogeneity in clinical genetic referral practices in pediatric oncology. We aimed to explore how clinicians recognize and classify …  Read more

This doctoral research project in architecture aims to enhance critical dialogues between space-focused disciplines and urban and cultural studies. It does so by exploring the relations between immigration and Toronto’s “modernist suburbs,” a remarkable suburban type, influenced by postwar planning in European welfare states, which structured some parts of the city’s metropolitan area from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. Initially addressed to middle-class populations of European origin, modernist suburbs have increasingly become home to multicultural communities with complex and distinctive social, cultural, and spatial patterns. The relational specificities between contemporary immigration and modernist suburban space remain underexplored in …  Read more
