2024 — Measurement of the Branching Fraction of Charmless Semileptonic B Meson Decays and the Quark-Mixing Matrix Element |Vub| with the Belle II Experiment
    Abstract

This thesis presents the first inclusive untagged analysis of $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ decays using data from the Belle II experiment. Within the Standard Model theory of particle physics, these are weak decays of the $B$ meson to a hadron containing an up quark, $X_u$, a charged lepton (either an electron or a muon), $\ell$, and the corresponding lepton neutrino, $\nu$. The decay rate is governed by the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix element $V_{ub}$. The value of the $V_{ub}$ matrix element is one of the fundamental parameters of nature, a quantity that cannot be theoretically predicted and therefore must …  Read more

2024 — Revisiting the Last Ice Area Projections from a High-Resolution Global Earth System Model
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Killing the business: affect, work, and kayfabe in professional wrestling
    Abstract

Killing the Business: Affect, Work, and Kayfabe in Professional Wrestling approaches pro wrestling as a “liminal genre” of cultural practice that strategically makes use of and conventionalizes media, work, and sociocultural discourses and practices between events. It investigates how pro wrestling’s generic conventions mediate and pattern pro wrestling’s structures of feeling, and the formalized ways in which the industry operates as an affective economy that generates lived material and social effects (Ahmed, 2014; Berlant, 2008; Chow, 2014). Since the 1880s, pro wrestling has operated as a “practice of staging contradictions” (Levi, 2008, p. 5). The most fundamental of these contradictions …  Read more

2024 — Pseudocapacitive Batteries: Towards High Energy and Power Densities with Quantized Capacitance
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Shifting focus: How emerging media are redefining environmental documentary
    Abstract

Environmental documentary was a marginal genre by the late 20th century, but in the 1990s and early 2000s, the genre’s prominence flourished with a boom in the production and prestige of environmentally minded nonfiction film. After 2010, the genre seemingly declines. I argue that this shift does not signal disinterest, but an intriguing destabilization of environmental documentary. With social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram attracting over one billion monthly users, traditional feature-length documentaries screened through festivals make up only a portion of video-based environmental content. These emerging media thus present an under-explored opportunity to reimagine the boundaries of environmental …  Read more

    2024 — Reinforcement Learning-Assisted Robotic Insertion
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — Investigating dilepton production rates and polarization at finite baryon density
    Abstract

Read more

    Abstract

2024 — Base excision repair auxiliary factors stimulate the enzymatic activities of DNA polymerase β
    Abstract

Read more

2024 — (Mis)understanding in youth peacebuilding: a textual analysis of variation in the objectives of the United Nations Security Council’s Youth Peace and Security Agenda and grass-roots youth peace organisations.
    Abstract

This thesis explores the (mis)understanding in youth peacebuilding by analysing the objectives of the United Nations Security Council’s Youth, Peace, and Security (YPS) agenda and those of grassroots youth peace organisations. Through an interpretative content analysis of UNSC resolutions 2250 (2015), 2419 (2018), and 2535 (2020), and intertextual comparison with documents from 65 member organisations of the United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY), the study uncovers fundamental differences in the framing and implementation of YPS objectives. While the UNSC focuses on youth as key agents in overcoming global security issues, grassroots organisations emphasise building everyday, durable peace that benefits both …  Read more

Read more

2024 — Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms Controlling Cumulus Layer Expansion at Ovulation
    Abstract

Read more

    Abstract

The solubility of UO2 solid and the speciation of U(IV) in fluoride-bearing aqueous fluids were investigated experimentally at a temperature of 200 °C and vapour-saturated water pressure. Oxygen fugacity was controlled by the hematite-magnetite buffer to ensure that it was below that of the UO3/UO2 equilibrium boundary and that dissolved uranium was dominantly as U(IV). The experiments were performed at a fluoride activity ranging from 1.6x10-7 to 0.17 m and pH values from 2.1 to 7.5. The concentration of dissolved uranium increased with decreasing pH and increasing fluoride activity from about 1.28x10-5 to 2.32x10-3 m, suggesting that H+ and F- …  Read more

2024 — “Little Known and less Frequented”: colonialism and conceptions of the environment in nineteenth-century British-Canadian imperial thought
    Abstract

This thesis presents case studies in imperial relationships with nineteenth-century Canadian environments. First, it tackles perceptions from the centre of the British empire through the Aborigines’ Protection Society (APS), a group of philanthropists who promoted the civilizing mission. The APS propagated their perception of the environment as tameable which had direct consequences for Indigenous people. The second case utilizes the anti-conquest framework to evaluate how travel literature by British writers transformed a partially tamed wilderness into an Eden for hunters, setting the groundwork for further colonization of the environment. The final case examines the writings of Canadian intellectuals to show …  Read more

2024 — Novel functions for the extended SLAM family of receptors in macrophages
    Abstract

The signaling lymphocytic activation molecule (SLAM) family of receptors is constituted by six canonical members (SLAMF1, SLAMF3, SLAMF4, SLAMF5, SLAMF6, and SLAMF7) and, traditionally, one non-canonical member named CD48 (also known as SLAMF2). Recently, two other non-canonical family members, SLAMF8 and SLAMF9, have gained attention as their expression levels have been associated with diverse pathological conditions. Most of the SLAM receptors have homotypic interactions, but in the case of SLAMF8 and SLAMF9, it is still unclear whether this occurs, or they have uncharacterized ligands. Moreover, only a few studies describing a possible function for these proteins have been done.In this …  Read more

2024 — Insights into mechanisms for reductive dechlorination by sulfidated nanoscale zerovalent iron
    Abstract

Sulfidation of nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) results in nanoparticles that are a composite of FeS and Fe(0) and are significantly more reactive and colloidally stable than nZVI alone. Sulfidated nZVI (S-nZVI) possesses high reactivity towards several chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons and yet has limited hydrogen evolution rate, which provides high selectivity to target chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons in aqueous matrices. The rates and extents of target compound degradation by S-nZVI is known to be influenced by the S and Fe precursors, the synthesis procedure (one-pot or two-pot procedure) the sulfur content of the S-nZVI and pollutant type. Crop species diversity plays an important role in agricultural landscape sustainability and resilience. In recent decades, the intensification of agriculture in some regions has often coincided with more homogenous agricultural landscapes, with fewer crop species being grown in larger fields. This has important implications for the provision of ecosystem services in agroecosystems (e.g., soil health and resilience to different disturbances), particularly when general landscape diversity is also reduced through conversion of forests and other remnant natural vegetation to agriculture. While past research has addressed various aspects of crop species diversity at aggregate (e.g., national) and fine local (e.g., single landscape) …  Read more
