2026 — Modeling the Climate Impact of Organic Waste Management in Canada using Life Cycle Assessment
    Abstract

Read more

2026 — Participation involvement and mental health among young people with physical disabilities: preliminary findings using the experience sampling method.
    Abstract

Background: Involvement in meaningful activities is a key aspect of participation and an important facet of well-being in youth with physical disabilities. This group tends to experience greater restrictions in participation and is often seen to be socially isolated and lonely. This may increase their vulnerability to mental health problems like anxiety and depression. While evidence on the positive association between participation (as depicted by family of participation-related constructs framework), and overall well-being is emerging, it largely relies on proxy reports or retrospective self-report methods. The experience sampling method (ESM) offers a promising avenue to capture the unique association between …  Read more

2026 — An investigation of the mechanisms of memory retrieval and learning in the hippocampus-ventral tegmental area loop
    Abstract

The hippocampal formation (HPC) is a crucial region in the encoding and retrieval of memory, thought to be mediated through ensemble formation and recruitment. Ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine (DA) neurons have been suggested to act as a teaching signal through coding for reward prediction errors to regulate learning and updating of memory when predictions are not met. A functional loop between the two regions has been described as the substrate of learning and memory, as well as novelty signaling. However, fundamental mechanisms into how each region supports its basic function have yet to be elucidated, making studies into their …  Read more

2026 — Re-examining the dopamine candidate gene theory of obesity: evidence from the UK Biobank and the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study
    Abstract

Obesity is a complex, chronic condition that is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Dopaminergic signaling has been implicated in reward processing, impulsivity, substance use and obesity. However, associations between dopamine polymorphisms and obesity have been inconsistent in candidate gene studies and genome-wide association studies (GWAS). The aim of this thesis was to reassess the dopamine candidate gene theory of obesity by examining dopamine gene polymorphisms and their associations with obesity and impulsivity-related traits in two large and developmentally distinct cohorts. A multilocus dopamine gene score was constructed which included polymorphisms from dopamine type 1 receptor (D1R), dopamine type …  Read more

2026 — Heterogeneity at the interface with biological surfaces
    Abstract

Read more

2026 — Reducing power consumption of photoplethysmography (PPG) based wearables with no-LED mode and current-to-digital converter (CDC) readout
    Abstract

In recent years, photoplethysmography (PPG) is considered extensively because it is a low-cost electro-optical technique for measuring the volumetric variations of blood and contains valuable health information such as heart rate (HR), respiration rate (RR), blood pressure (BP), and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). However, PPG sensing in wearable devices remains constrained by two primary challenges for long-term deployment: (1) the high-power consumption of the light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and (2) the requirement for high dynamic range in signal acquisition. In order to enable energy-efficient, wearable, and long-lasting health monitoring devices this work addresses these challenges by proposing two innovations: (1) a …  Read more

2026 — Beading Myself Home: An Autoethnography of Urban Indigenous Resurgence, Pan-Indigeneity, Displacement, and the Threads of Holding On
    Abstract

Anishinaabe cultural practices have long sustained the transmission of knowledge through relationships, shared practice, and community responsibility. Among these practices, beadwork functions not only as artistic expression but also as a site of cultural teaching. While beadwork is often assumed to be learned within traditional territories or family networks, many Indigenous learners now encounter these teachings in urban environments. In cities, Indigenous people gather in workshops, community spaces, and digital environments where knowledge continues to circulate through relational networks. This thesis examines how urban Indigenous beaders learn their craft and what these learning pathways reveal about Indigenous knowledge transmission in contemporary …  Read more

Read more

2026 — Within-Host Genetic Diversity of Clinical Pseudomonas aeruginosa Isolates Is Associated with Differential mRNA Expression of Inflammatory Response Markers in Airway Epithelial Cells In Vitro
    Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) establishes chronic infections in the cystic fibrosis (CF) airway, where prolonged colonization drives within-host genetic adaptation and the emergence of bacterial lineages that differ in virulence and immune activation. While chronic infection with P. aeruginosa is a hallmark of CF lung disease, the extent to which within-host evolution alters epithelial transcriptional responses remains poorly understood. This thesis investigated how genetic divergence among closely related clinical isolates shapes the activation of Toll-like receptor (TLR) and aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) pathways in airway epithelial cells.Clinical isolates were obtained from CF patients as longitudinal early/late pairs or as co-isolated …  Read more

2026 — Effects of chronic nicotine and its withdrawal on the induction and desensitization of c-Fos protein in fifteen regions of the rat brain
    Abstract

It is widely thought that nicotine-dependent individuals smoke tobacco to obtain nicotine’s stimulatory effect upon nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) in the brain, with withdrawal reflecting nAChR underactivity. However, nicotine is a two-faced drug: while it acts acutely as a nAChR agonist, during chronic exposure its predominant effect appears to be desensitization. In this view, withdrawal would be driven by nAChR overactivation by the endogenous neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This project aims to determine where in the brain nAChRs desensitize during chronic nicotine administration and to show whether nAChR supersensitivity occurs during nicotine withdrawal, and if so what temporal and regional pattern this …  Read more

2026 — Influence of natural water matrices on the toxicity of copper sulphate and S-metolachlor in early-life-stage fish
    Abstract

Understanding how environmental context modifies chemical toxicity is a fundamental challenge in aquatic ecotoxicology. Traditional laboratory tests typically expose organisms to single compounds in controlled, simplified media, producing results that often fail to capture the complexity of natural environments where organisms are exposed to diverse contaminant mixtures. In freshwater ecosystems, fish often spawn and develop in rivers and tributaries contaminated with agricultural runoff, industrial effluents, and urban wastewaters, where water chemistry and pollutant mixtures can vary widely over time and space. The chemical composition of these natural waters can strongly influence the speciation, bioavailability, and toxicity of pollutants. Consequently, a …  Read more

2026 — Trait plasticity and the maintenance of biodiversity
    Abstract

The rapid advancement of generative models has fundamentally transformed medical imaging, enabling breakthroughs in data synthesis and augmentation, cross-modality translation, image quality improvement, and disease progression modeling. However, high-resolution medical imaging—particularly 3D neuroimaging—introduces substantial scaling challenges related to memory, computational efficiency, volumetric consistency, and controllability. Existing generative models often struggle to preserve fine-grained anatomical and pathological structure across full 3D volumes, limiting their clinical relevance. Moreover, while recent vision–language models (VLMs) enable text-guided image synthesis, maintaining reliable prompt–image alignment and supporting clinically grounded counterfactual reasoning in high-resolution 3D medical imaging remains largely underexplored. X-ray mammography, the current gold standard, exposes patients to ionizing radiation that limits exam frequency, while magnetic resonance imaging is costly and reserved for high-risk cases. Microwave imaging uses non-ionizing radiation and exploits dielectric contrast between healthy and malignant tissues, making it an attractive low-cost complement to established diagnostics. Over the last decade, the RF Breast Cancer Detection Group at McGill University has been developing flexible near-field biosensor arrays mounted on bra-like supports with the long-term vision of a …  Read more

2026 — A multi-dimensional study of perceptual distortions mapping in amblyopia
    Abstract

Read more

2026 — From aging clocks to molecular mechanisms: novel strategies to combat aging
    Abstract

Age-related diseases, such as cancers, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative disorders, are the main causes of disability and death in humans. The aging process is a major causal factor in the development of age-related diseases and is characterized by the progressive accumulation of damage at molecular, cellular, tissue, and organismal levels. Therefore, targeting aging is a promising strategy for improving human health and extending life. My thesis focuses on identifying and characterizing novel interventions to slow aging and reverse its consequences using cutting-edge experimental and computational approaches.A central challenge in targeting aging lies in how to measure aging progression …  Read more

2026 — Stability-Instability Paradox Reconsidered: deterrence and conflict between Iran and Israel.
    Abstract

Since 1979, but particularly between 2005 and 2025, Iran and Israel have maintained a rivalry that has led to direct confrontation. This thesis focuses on their relationship through the lens of the stability-instability paradox. We observe how a mutual capacity to threaten each other's fundamental interests has resulted in tactical instability, coexisting with strategic stability within a context of nuclear asymmetry. Despite Israel's nuclear monopoly and conventional superiority, the two actors managed—until 2024-25—to deter each other from any major attack, thus perpetuating a limited conflict. Iran has engaged in asymmetric deterrence, partially compensating for its conventional inferiority. Israel has engaged …  Read more

2026 — Hybrid graph representation learning for molecular optical property prediction in low-data regimes
    Abstract

Deep learning has emerged as a powerful tool for molecular property prediction, yet many experimental workflows operate in data-limited regimes where current state-of-the-art graph neural networks (GNNs) are unstable or impractical. This thesis investigates hybrid modelling strategies that decouple molecular representation learning from downstream regression for the prediction of optical properties of organic molecules. By combining directed message passing neural networks (D-MPNNs) with gradient-boosted decision trees, we demonstrate that hybrid architectures outperform end-to-end neural models for absorption wavelength prediction in small-to-mid-sized data regimes, particularly under distribution shift. To understand the origin of these gains, we analyze predictive variability using a …  Read more
