2022 — Multi-objective neural architecture search for image segmentation
    Abstract

…  Read more

2003 — The application of the sag power index to ore body hardness characterization for the design and optimization of autogenous grinding circuits /
    Abstract

The SAG Power Index test (SPI) is a tool for forecasting autogenous mill performance. Much effort has been directed towards the development of the process models relating SPI to throughput estimates, but little has been directed towards ore body modeling. Blending studies are presented showing that the SPI is not additive, affecting the geostatistical procedures. A method is given to ensure that additivity is respected during geostatistical interpolation. A procedure for relating mean SPI precision to sample spacing is given. This procedure is combined with a study of the process model error to estimate the precision of the mean throughput …  Read more

2025 — Calibration and interpolation techniques in data analysis for the PRIZM global 21-cm experiment
    Abstract

Read more

2018 — Consuming quantification and recipes for resistance digesting Canada's food guide
    Abstract

Read more

1950 — A follow-up study of brief service contacts in a child guidance center
    Abstract

A follow-up study in the child guidance field usually stems from an interest in the amount of success met with in past treatment endeavours. From the material obtained by interviewing former patients or speaking to persons close to them it often becomes possible to arrive at some conclusions as to the benefits derived by these patients from past contacts with the clinic. Such a study may also serve to indicate the need for refinements in the present treatment approach which might add to the type of service given in the future.  Read more

2011 — Evaluation of high water soluble carbohydrates annual forages for dairy cattle
    Abstract

Read more

2011 — Time-mode reconstruction IIR filters for sigma-delta phase modulation applications
    Abstract

Read more

1999 — A study of the factors affecting the disposal of high sulphide tailings as paste fill /
    Abstract

The safe environmental disposal of sulphide bearing materials is fast becoming a major economic factor in determining the profitability of mining operations. Among sulphide minerals, iron sulphides are the most common mining wastes. Surface disposal of pyrite and pyrrhotite mine waste is the major cause of acid mine drainage generation and the consequent environmental damages. This thesis investigates the use of new technologies and ideas to improve the disposal of mine waste containing pyrite and pyrrhotite. The first recommended improvement is to backfill the materials instead of disposing of them on the surface. There are new approaches and better technologies …  Read more

1961 — Geographic and occupational wage differentials in Quebec and Ontario.
    Abstract

Public and professional interest in wage determination has, in the past, been occupied with an analysis of the determination of the level of wages, both absolutely and relatively to the rewards of the other factors of production. Consequently any analysis of the wage structure has been given relatively minor attention. But the issue of what the wage structure should be, and how it is determined, is just as important as the larger questions of the determination of the wage level and the distribution of the proceeds of production between the labour and the other factors of production.  Read more

2009 — From chipped to ground: the spatio-temporal systematics of 9,000 years of archaeological change in southwest British Columbia
    Abstract

Read more

2016 — Floodplain livelihoods, rural-urban linkages, and aquatic resource conservation in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Peruvian Amazon
    Abstract

…  Read more

    Abstract

This thesis will involve an examination of Enlightenment notions of humans and nature, and how these have been embedded in modern human activities. The thesis will focus on the key theories arising from: Hobbes and the materialists; Descartes and the dualists; and Newton and the classical economists. Particular ideas, concerning the natural philosophy of Descartes and Hobbes, and the physics of Newton and its impact on classical and neoclassical economists, will be examined. A broad historical trajectory of their ideas, and their influence, will be traced through time to today. The example of livestock agriculture, focussing on the practice of …  Read more

    Abstract

A transistorized, neutron time-of-flight spectrometer has been designed and built for measurement of the energy of neutrons generated with the aid of the McGill cyclotron. Circuitry of the type used in fast coincidence measurements has been used, with avalanche transistors as fast discriminators and limiters. The intrinsic electronic resolution is considerably better than one nanosecond. The spectrometer was used to examine the radio frequency structure of proton pulses generated by the cyclotron. This was found to vary greatly with operating conditions and to depend greatly on the stability of the radio frequency oscillator. The short-term width at half height was …  Read more

2005 — Inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enteritidis in liquid egg products using pulsed electric field
    Abstract

Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) processing, a novel, non-thermal food preservation method, has been shown to inactivate both spoilage and pathogenic microorganisms, while minimizing changes in the physical and organoleptic qualities of the food, such as those observed under conventional thermal processing. An understanding of the inactivation mechanisms and kinetics of microorganisms exposed to lethal or sub-lethal PEF treatments would allow industry and consumers to better understand and evaluate the potential of PEF technology as an alternative or complement to traditional methods of food preservation. This study consisted of three sets of experiments which sought to determine: (i) the electrical conductivity …  Read more

2003 — Identification of antibiotic-resistant staphylococci and epidemiological typing of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
    Abstract

Staphylococci strains are among the most widespread multidrug-resistant nosocomial pathogens in Canada. Rapid and accurate identification and epidemiological typing of methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and its discrimination from coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) and glycopeptide-intermediate S. aureus (GISA) are crucial for appropriate therapy and for monitoring and limiting intra- and inter-hospital spread of epidemic MRSA strains. Although pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reaction methods for the identification of MRSA are reliable, they are technically demanding, time-consuming and inappropriate for routine clinical diagnosis. Moreover, no reliable method exists for discrimination of epidemic MRSA from sporadic MRSA and from GISA strains. The objective …  Read more

1987 — Separate integral responding in children demonstrating attention deficit disorder
    Abstract

Integral (holistic) and separable (analytic) processing were studied in ADD-H and normal children using restricted classification tasks composed of separable dimensions and triad/tetrad combinations. In Studies One and Three classifications of ADD-H children and controls were compared on size/brightness and length/density combinations. In Study Two classifications of four age groups of normal subjects (mean ages 5-3, 7-9, 11-1 years and adults) were compared on size-brightness combinations. ADD-H children demonstrated significantly fewer separable responses than normal controls only on the tetrads. Normal subjects showed a developmental trend towards differential separable responding to size as compared to brightness. ADD-H children appear to …  Read more

2002 — Predicting the variations in water quality along an irrigation canal in Punjab, Pakistan
    Abstract

The Indus Basin Irrigation System (IBIS) irrigates 16 million ha of land in Pakistan. The irrigation water is also used for domestic consumption in rural areas and where the ground water is brackish. Many major cities and towns dispose their untreated wastewater directly into the irrigation canal network, which ultimately has adverse impacts on the downstream water quality. In order to better understand the water quality variations, several parameters were measured along a 45 km long irrigation canal (Hakra-6R) in Punjab, Pakistan during the year 2000. The parameters measured were: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate (NO3), ammonia (NH3), Escherichia coli …  Read more

2015 — Targeting the DNA repair pathway in pelvic epithelial cancer: a novel treatment strategy combining IGF-1R kinase and PARP inhibitors
    Abstract

Notre …  Read more

2018 — Knot formation on nanochannel-Confined DNA and Flow-assisted DNA disentanglement and linearization
    Abstract

Inspired by the knot abundance on biopolymers such as extracted DNA from phage capsids, DNA in nanofluidic systems and proteins, we introduce a knot factory on-chip based on hydrodynamic compression of single T4 DNA molecules against barriers in nanochannels. The proposed method provides an efficient way to form knots on DNA under compression and detects the independently evolving knots during the relaxation process following the compression. We observe that knotting probability increases with pressure as well as with the waiting time in the compressed state. Moreover, we develop a free energy formalism derived from scaling arguments, which describes our experimental …  Read more

2005 — Equivalent numerical model for honeycomb subjected to high speed impact
    Abstract

Due to their high specific strength and stiffness, honeycomb sandwich structures are used in impact-resistance applications. Their structural efficiency depends to a great extent on the lightweight core separating the face sheets and providing overall high stiffness. Detailed finite element modeling of the penetration of honeycombs by a projectile can be fairly complex, and computationally expensive as shown in the first part of this study. A computationally efficient axisymmetric equivalent numerical homogeneous model for Aluminum 5052-1119 1/8in - 0.001in hexagonal honeycomb subjected to high speed impacts in the range of 60 m/s to 140 m/s is then developed. 2021 — A transparent, tough, and impact-resistant bio-inspired glass composite with tunable mechanical properties
    Abstract

Glasses have numerous applications due to their exceptional transparency and stiffness; however, poor fracture and impact resistance limit their applications. One strategy to improve their mechanical properties is through bio-inspiration. Structural biological composites such as nacre, the protective inner layer of mollusk shells, offer far superior mechanical properties relative to their constituents. This has motivated researchers to mimic the design principles in natural composites to create tough transparent materials. However, current bio-inspired composites suffer from poor optical transmission and trade-offs between rigidity, toughness, and fabrication scalability. Here, we present an optically transparent tough nacreous glass composite material with a four-fold …  Read more

2018 — Spontaneous imbalance in rotating stratified turbulence
    Abstract

Whereas high-frequency waves are valid solutions to the Boussinesq equations in certain limits, their amplitudes are generally observed to be small in large-scale atmospheric and oceanic data. Traditionally, this has led to the development of balance models, reducing the dynamics to only the slow subset. Their solutions, however, can spontaneously generate imbalance in the context of the full equations. To study this phenomenon, we perform high-resolution turbulence simulations of the non-hydrostatic Boussinesq equations, starting with a high-order nonlinearly balanced initial condition. To produce this initial condition, we employ the nonlinear normal mode initialization scheme that was introduced by Baer and …  Read more

2016 — On the use of Gauss' principle in vibration analysis
    Abstract

Read more
