The ruminant animal, by virtue of the population of active microorganisms which is supported in the rumen, can utilize a much wider range of nitrogen containing substances for body maintenance and production than can the monogastric animal. The rumen microorganisms, chiefly the bacteria, synthesize microbial protein of high biological value from non-protein nitrogen sources in the rumen, and this becomes available to the host animal by normal processes of protein digestion in the abomasum. Biological invasions are a major component of global environmental change and are increasing in frequency. Most community-level impact studies of invasions are concerned with interactions between exotic and native species. However, interactions among exotic species are becoming increasingly common, potentially altering their respective impacts on invaded ecosystems. This research identifies one possible outcome of such interactions: the growing phenomenon of 'exotic species replacement', whereby a newly arriving exotic species surpasses the abundance of a functionally similar incumbent exotic species. Biological invasions threaten the stability and biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems worldwide. The impacts of an invading species often vary across systems, making their prediction difficult. When data from multiple invaded sites are available, statistical models can be developed to correlate an invader's distribution and abundance with local environmental variables; such models could then provide managers with useful tools to help prioritize efforts to control the invader. The perception of isometric forces was examined under normal conditions, during sustained constant force contractions, and during vibration of the muscle tendon. In these experiments a contralateral limb matching procedure was employed, and force and the brachial biceps and triceps electromyogram (EMG) were recorded from each arm. Under normal conditions it was found that smaller forces were consistently overestimated in magnitude. During sustained constant force contractions the matching forces exerted by the unfatigued arm increased linearly as did the EMG of the fatiguing muscle. A novel approach whereby one can use probiotic bacteria for the purpose of topical and oral therapy is presented. More specifically, a treatment modality using enzymatically active probiotic production of gaseous nitric oxide (gNO) for wound healing, antimicrobial, cosmetic, and dermatologic therapy is presented. In another aspect, a probiotic treatment modality for metabolic disease and metabolic syndrome using nitrate reductase (NiR) active probiotic bacteria is explored. A novel approach whereby one can use genetically engineered cells for the purpose of deconjugating bile acids and lowering cholesterol is presented in this thesis. The concept of oral administration of artificial cells has been used for this purpose. In concurrence to these requirements, several in-vitro methods are designed and discussed in this report. For these studies, alginate-polylysine-alginate microcapsules were used. Process parameters for Lactobacillus plantarum 80 (pCBH1) cell microencapsulation have been presented. The contemporary discussion on the topic of multicultural education in the Canadian literature relates questions of race, ethnicity or culture to public schooling, with little attention given to the area of teacher preparation. In this study we review the political and social background of multicultural education. This study notably presents the results of a 42 item survey of pre-service teachers' perceptions of: (a) the concept of multiculturalism and; (b) the adequacy of their training for multicultural classrooms. Physical and/or mathematical models can be used in order to achieve optimum conditions for the clean steel during steelmaking processes. In the present study, important metallurgical transport phenomena in steelmaking ladles and tundishes have been investigated using both mathematical and physical (water) models. Through appropriate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations, the intermixing of fluid within gas-stirred ladles can be modelled quite satisfactorily. The St. Charles titaniferous magnetite deposits lie on the north shore of the Saguenay River, fifteen miles downstream from Lake St. John, on lots 44-48, Bourget township, Chicoutimi County.
