To the best of this writer’s knowledge, there has been no recent text devoted to a thorough examination of the subject and only sporadic interest has been shown by researchers. Sigmund Freud, the father of modern psychiatry, began his learned observations by analyzing the mental health of adults. The incidence at conception is greater, but more than 80% will not reach term (Connor and Ferguson-Smith 1985). Presumably, numerous factors, genetic and environmental are influencing this process. The extant Manasara is one of the authoritative treatises of vastusastra, traditional Indian architectural theory. The dissertation addresses the question of the nature of vastusastra, traditional architectural theory, as enunciated in the Manasara, and the relationship of theory to traditional practice. Vastusastra claims itself to be a priori with respect to practice. Two aspects of theory, theology and nomology, constitute the ontological and epistemological foundation and structure for this claim. This thesis proposes an innovative solution to detect and localize anomalous events in a video stream from a static camera. Anomalies are defined as events with a very low probability of occurrence in the scene or as events typically uncharacteristic of the scene. In this work, we employ a constrained convolutional auto-encoder to learn the scene characteristics. The autoencoder is trained on spatio-temporal video-volumes extracted from recorded videos of the scene. This essay is an analysis and description of the compositional tools and methods developed during the compositional process. The piece attempts to explore a relationship between emotional expression in the human voice and emotional expression in music. The aims of the study were to examine substance abuse and physical and mental health in an urban Aboriginal population. Data was collected through structured interviews (n = 202) with Aboriginals in the greater Montreal area. The majority were single, unemployed, and lived in the urban area for a long time (mean of 9.96 +/- .76 years). One third reported having a current substance abuse problem. Results indicated high levels of psychological distress augmented by substance abuse. Substance abusers were also more likely to have been the victims of abuse. Cercariae of the digenean Plagiorchis noblei penetrate and kill a variety of aquatic larval dipterans. The present study determined whether these parasites can infect blackfly larvae, and established what biotic and abiotic factors affect parasite acquisition and the survival of infected hosts in the laboratory. Four species of blackfly larvae, Prosimulium mixtum, Simulium vittatum, S. decorum, and Stegopterna mutata, were exposed to cercariae in flowing water. Prevalence and intensity of infection of all species varied directly with exposure intensity and decreased with increasing water velocity, prevalence increased with larval size. The kinetics of production and role of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-$ alpha$) and nitric oxide (NO) during the early phase of blood-stage infection with Plasmodium chabaudi AS were investigated using two inbred strains of mice which differ in the level of resistance to this parasite. This thesis studies how Native women make life choices and set goals for themselves, and what influences those choices. In Chisasibi, James Bay, young Cree women learn their roles and responsibilities--what is expected of them as women--at school, at home, in the bush and, most importantly, from the examples set for them by older women in the community. Cree women's descriptions and perceptions of their own lives, in their own words, forms the basis of the framework used here to analyze women's comments on their aspirations, expectations and obligations. This project explores the power dynamics within the Iranian political system, asking what accounts for the rise and fall of a president's power relative to the other dominant formal and informal institutions in Iran. Comparing perspectives that focus on charisma, ideology and political bargaining, I argue that the relative power of the president is contingent on a variety of institutional and behavioural factors which define his ability to bargain within an institutional structure of overlapping spheres of control. The localisation of B lymphocyte precursor cells in mouse bone marrow and their associations with stromal reticular cells and macrophages have been investigated by in vivo radioimmunolabeling combined with light and electron microscope radioautography. The objective of this feasibility study was to determine for the elderly at-risk for falls the effects of a 10-week program in Argentine Tango dancing or Walking on cognition. Thirty healthy community dwelling seniors (60+) were recruited to take part in the study. They were evaluated at baseline, post-intervention and follow-up on divided attention (Walking-While-Talking) and working memory tasks. It was found that Tango dancing significantly improved divided attention capabilities while the Walk program significantly improved working memory. These findings need to be replicated with a larger number of subjects.  Read more

This dissertation is a study of gender transitivity as I see it at work in three of Robert Schumann's dramatic works: the Szenen aus Goethes Faust, WoO 3, the opera Genoveva op. 81, and the oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri op. 50. In this study, I use the term gender transitivity to refer to the fluid movement along feminine and masculine subject positions.
