Sports injuries that could be prevented by protective equipment are a serious cause of morbidity among children. The objectives of this study were to: determine the frequency of protective equipment use among children participating in winter sports, identify the reasons for non-use of equipment, explore whether an injury prompted an intended change in the use of protective equipment, and compare an open-ended and a categorical method for collecting data on sports injuries. The responses of the atrioventricular node (AVN) to changes in activation rate is complex. A variety of approaches have been used to explain the different responds of AVN, but none has been able to describe fully nodal behavior. Three rate-dependent nodal properties referred to as recovery, facilitation, and fatigue contribute to rate-induced changes in nodal conduction time. We developed a model incorporating a quantitative description of these properties that was able to accurately predict AV node conduction during steady state atrial pacing. The objectives of this study were: (1) to compare lung fibre concentration and dimensions found in two groups of former Quebec chrysotile miners (Asbestos and Thetford-Mines) and, (2) to investigate the relationship between lung-retained mineral fibre concentration and dimension (length, diameter, and aspect ratio) to severity of interstitial lung fibrosis (asbestosis) within these groups. Lung fibre content was determined for 86 former employees of chrysotile mines and mills in two Quebec mining regions: Thetford-Mines and Asbestos (Jeffrey Mine). The two major proteolytic enzymes, chymotrypsin and trypsin, were used at different ratios (E/S, 0.0-0.3%), temperatures (25$ sp circ$C-45$ sp circ$C) and time of hydrolysis (1-3h) for frozen and fresh shrimp. This study analyzed the economic welfare implications of the 1990 intraregional trade liberalization scheme within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on member country producers and consumers. Four countries were chosen as a point of focus: Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana and Mali, and two commodities: millet and sorghum. Seasonal ice cover off Canada's east coast was examined in relation to synoptic scale atmospheric events. Ice concentration information derived from Nimbus-7 scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) measurements of surface brightness temperatures, supplemented by AES composite ice charts, provided timely coverage of the study area during the 1971/72, 1980/81 and 1984/85 ice seasons, 1971/72 and 1984/85 seasons with high ice concentrations and 1980/81 a season with low concentrations. The immunological responses in hosts infected with Trypanosoma lewisi were examined during the course of infection and after recovery. Peak antibody levels coincided with the time of parasite elimination, but remained significantly elevated for over one year after the end of the infection The antigen repertoire recognized by antibodies demonstrated that some were revealed only by sera taken during the infection, and other antigens were revealed for the first time only by post-recovery sera. We reported that transgenic mice constitutively expressing the B7.2 (CD86) T cell costimulatory ligand on microglia spontaneously develop a T cell-mediated demyelinating disease. We have shown that CD8+ T cells are the primary effector T cell-subset that initiates the pathological process. This demyelinating disease appears to be initiated by the activation antigen-specific CD8+ T cells within the central nervous system (CNS) and shows a complete dependence on IFN-gamma receptor signalling. Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) catalyzes the reduction of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate to 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, a substrate for remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. Methionine is then converted to S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), the universal methyl donor. In the mouse, MTHFR levels are highest in the testis and mice deficient for a targeted mutation in the Mthfr gene are infertile. Analysis of prenatal gonocyte development provided evidence that the defect in the Mthfr mouse testis occurs shortly after birth. The concept of a "crisis of masculinity" cannot address these dimensions sufficiently and is of little use to the historian. Nanopores with diameters ranging from 30 nm to 50 nm were drilled in siliconnitride membranes using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) electronbeam. High pressures of cold helium gas were applied to one side of themembranes to achieve flow through the nanopores. Mass flows for pressuregradients up to 1000 psi were measured with the goal of achieving transonicflow. Cell adhesion molecules are known to play crucial roles in a variety of developmental processes. The neural cell adhesion molecule N-CAM is strongly implicated in neurulation and neural crest cell (NCC) migration and was thus studied in splotch (Sp) neural tube defect mutant embryos. At the 20 somite-stage of gestation day 9, Sp N-CAM was found to contain polysialic acid (PSA) side chains which are normally only present beginning at gestational day 11. Cellular senescence is a tumour suppressor mechanism which prevents the proliferation of malignant cells. In normal cells, oncogenic stimuli induce a senescence response and growth arrest coordinated by tumour suppressor genes, but the loss of expression of these genes impairs the establishment of senescence in cancer cells. We studied the role of histone methylation and oncogenic histone modifiers to assess their responsibility throughout the bypass of tumour suppressor pathways.
