A hithertofore unknown aldehyde has been isolated from the ethanolysis products of maple wood as a pure crystalline compound. The structure of this new compound has been completely elucidated from an investigation of its properties and derivatives. The isolation and identification of this aldehyde has thrown new light upon the structure of lignin and the mechanism of the synthesis of plant pigments. A new method has been developed for the complete, chemical separation of the syringyl and guaiacyl components found in the aldebydic fraction from the ethanolysis products of maple wood.  Read more

Meredith Monk's multi-modal work incorporates theatre, dance, film and music. Her claim is that music and specifically the voice lie at the heart of all her work. At this core, she uses auditory gesture in wordless vocal lines to express her meaning, usually the hidden narrative of emotion, to enable universal intelligibility. This thesis uses the concept of gestus in the sense of Brecht and Weill as an instrument to examine vocal gesture in three scenes in Monk's opera ATLAS, and then relates it to her compositional process. This thesis works to outline some of the contemporary responses to the work and person of Paul de Man. These responses are particularly viewed in light of the recent discovery of de Man's World War II journalist writings. Through this critical survey, the thesis approaches a reading of deconstruction through the debate surrounding the authority of one of the theory's principal practitioners. This thesis reports results on the investigation of the thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) on a platinum electrode at pH 7.4 in a wide temperature range using the electrochemical techniques of cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and differential capacitance (DC). The adsorption of BSA at anodic potentials has been found to be a competitive process occurring in parallel with platinum oxide formation. It has been found that the adsorption charge is directly proportional to the amount of protein adsorbed. The technique of protein A-gold immunoelectron microscopy was used to determine the distributions of two photosynthetic complexes in the thylakoid membranes of the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum. The fucoxanthin-chlorophyll a/c light-harvesting complex, believed to be associated with photosystem II, was found to be equally distributed among appressed and unappressed membranes, whereas photosystem I was slightly more concentrated in the latter. These results suggest that in diatoms, the two photosystems and their associated light-harvesting complexes are essentially equally distributed on the two types of membranes, in marked contrast to the lateral heterogeneity observed in higher plants and green algae. CD4+ regulatory T (TREG) cells are important contributors to the induction and maintenance of peripheral tolerance. This heterogeneous population consists of naturally occurring and induced CD4 + TREG cells that share between themselves key immunoregulatory characteristics. Their phenotype and function often relies on the expression of Foxp3 transcription factor and the presence of the immunomodulating cytokine TGF-beta1. The inter-dependence between TGF-beta1 and Foxp3 in the induction and maintenance of peripheral tolerance is gradually being elucidated.
