Integrative drama/theatre is a process founded upon the principles and practices of educational drama/theatre, and incorporates approaches and techniques intended to facilitate the integration of students with disabilities into regular classrooms. This educational approach is open-ended, creative and child-centred. This study explores the integrative drama/theatre process in two projects implemented in a regular high school in Montreal. Oxytocin (OT) is a nonapeptide produced in hypothalamic neurons. This neuropeptide hormone plays important roles in the physiology of reproduction. The gene encoding OT has been cloned in several species including human, rat, cow and, most recently, mouse. Although the gene sequences were known for some time, no information about the mechanisms regulating the OT gene promoter in any of the species has become available. Background. Adults admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) often experience pain. A multimodal approach to pain management is recommended, including nonpharmacological interventions such as music. To determine the effect of music interventions for ICU pain management, our systematic review of randomized controlled trials supported that 20-30 minutes of music with a tempo of 60-80 bpm was efficacious to reduce pain in ICU patients able to self-report. Dynamic muscle function was studied in human normal, pathological (rheumatoid arthritic, post-meniscectomy) and prosthetic knee joints. Function in the knee extensor and flexor muscles was defined from data derived from evaluations of joint motion, strength and electromyographic activity. Strength was measured during maximal voluntary isokinetic knee extension and flexion movements (torque-angle curves) at 30(DEGREES)/s, 90(DEGREES)/s, and 180(DEGREES)/s. Electromyograms (surface electrodes, rectified, time averaged) were recorded from five muscles of the lower extremity during knee movements in activities: gait, stair ascent and descent and chair rising and sitting. Increasing urban development, in addition to changing climatic conditions, are just a few of the factors negatively impacting Jamaica's water resources. Therefore, conceptual tools are required for the management of water resources during water scarce conditions. Such tools include drought indices, irrigation requirement guidelines and computer simulation models for irrigation planning.Monthly irrigation demands were calculated for three sites in Jamaica: Savanna-la-mar in the parish of Westmoreland, Beckford Kraal in the parish of Clarendon, and Serge Island in the parish of St. Thomas. Objective. The use of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors may impair load-induced bone formation but also prevent menopause-associated bone loss. We hypothesized that COX-2 inhibitor use would be associated with an increased bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women not using estrogen therapy and conversely, a decreased BMD in men. Methods. We used data from the Canadian Multicenter Osteoporosis Study, a longitudinal, randomly selected, population-based community cohort study. The outcome measure was percent difference in bone mineral density (g/cm2). The purpose of this study was to identify the best set of variables measured at in-hospital interview to predict perceived pain-related impairment of function at three week follow-up in 361 hospitalized adult patients with pain (173 males, 188 females; mean age 48.3 years). Multiple regression analyses were performed on a subset of data from a large prospective pain prevalence study. Three models were developed to predict perceived overall function, physical function and psychological function on a training sample (n = 252) and tested for reliability on a cross validation sample (n = 109). Recent criticism has cast the suburban playhouses of Early Modern London as marginalised institutions, in at least a topographic if not a symbolic sense. This thesis will contend that marginality is a relative term, and that for the inhabitants of the suburb, of Clerkenwell, the salient social function of the Red Bull theatre was not to serve the City as a site for licence, but to provide a neighbourhood space in which bonds of community could be formed. Dominant theories of aboriginal rights articulate the relation between rights and identity in terms of a logic which treats identity as an irreducible good and rights as the instrumental means of its protection. However, identity claims and legal claims emerge in our use of language. Identity and the institutions in which identities are expressed and experienced are constituted in speech. A close analysis reveals the degree to which law and identity are a systemic imbrication of normative claims characterized by an innate indeterminacy. This indeterminacy renders all rights and identity claims contingent on their reception and validation by others.  Read more

This study examined the exposure of the Eastern Screech-owl (Otus asio) to contaminants in apple orchards of southern Quebec. Using a worstcase scenario approach, secondary exposure to three organophosphorus insecticides, (phosmet, azinphosmethyl and phosalone), two anticoagulant rodenticides, (chlorophacinone and diphacinone), and residues of previously applied organochlorines, particularly DDT and metabolites, was assessed. Exposure to PCBs and trace metals was also considered. Small mammal species preyed upon by Screech-owls were captured in orchards for residue analysis on a continual basis for persistent compounds or after insecticide and rodenticide applications. Generally speaking, the 'National Interest’ may be termed the driving force of international politics, the essential framework for the definition of state objectives and the conduct of policy. The currant fruit fly, Epochra canadensis Loew, a native insect, is an important factor limiting the production of currants and gooseberries in the greater part of Canada, and in parts of the United States of America. Studies have shown this insect to be vulnerable in the adult stage to stomach and contact insecticides. This thesis analyses the Australian Government's responsibility for asylum seekers held in immigration detention at Manus Island, Papua New Guinea and Nauru Regional Processing Centres. The first section highlights the enforcement gap in international law with regards to Australia's extraterritorial immigration control. It concludes that international law is currently limited in its protection of asylum seekers held in offshore detention. The argument advanced in the second section challenges the sovereignty/irregular migration dichotomy regularly advanced by states. The site of the vasopressor action and the distribution of angiotensin II have been studied in the mouse with physiological techniques and a new morphological method. The site of conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II in the isolated lung has been studied with these methods. A comparison of the ratios of l4C angiotensin II and 3H inulin at the time of the pressor effect and the inactivation shows an extracellular location of the peptide. The aim of the work is to determine the effects of electron interactions on the power absorbed by a dense electron gas under the conditions of cyclotron resonance. This is accomplished by computing the transverse, complex conductivities within self-consistent field theory. A relaxation time is used to express the effects of scattering on the conductivities. The validity of this assumption is discussed fully. The power absorption is calculated for the propagation of microwaves along the direction of the uniform magnetic field in a finite sample of the gas. When a decision on where to put a protected area to conserve biodiversity must be made at a given time, the decision must be based on the best data available. But, adequate data are often lacking. This thesis examines the use of surrogate measures of biodiversity in conservation decision-making in Guyana, South America. The distribution of vervets in Barbados was not uniform across the island, vervets being more abundant in parishes with high vegetative cover and low human population density. Ranging patterns for 4 troops of vervets in Barbados were shown to be influenced by the maximum daily temperature and the mean daily humidity. The frequency of use of an area decreased with increasing distance from the sleeping site, and the duration of use increased with increasing distance from the sleeping site. Solvolysis of 3 B-cholesteryl derivatives have been known to result in the formation of derivatives of 3 A, 5-cyclo-cholestan-6 B-ol. By analogy with the cholesteryl series one might expect that solvolysis of 4, 4-dimethylcholesteryl 3 B-esters would yield the corresponding 3 A, 5-cyclo steroids of similar configuration at C6. The existence of such a compound, however, still awaits positive confirmation. Because of our interest in 4-alkylated steroids and especially on account of recent investigations on the solvolysis of 4, 4-dimethylcholesteryl tosylate, it was considered essential to synthesize the 3 A,5-cyclo-4, 4- dimethylcholestan-6 B-ol in an unambiguous fashion.  Read more

"The introduction of goldfish (Carassius auratus) into Quebec offered the opportunity ta perform a series of cause and effect experiments ta investigate the impacts of an exotic on native aquatic communities. Experimental work with outdoor artificial ponds showed that significant levels of turbidity were generated by goldfish foraging. This turbidity did not have a direct effect upon vegetation, however the substrate temperature of turbid pools was found ta be as much as 3°C ecaler than the non-turbid controls. The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a hardy exotic species that have established sporadically distributed feral populations throughout North America. In one shallow seasonally anoxic pond goldfish formed a large stunted population of 15-17,000 ind ha$ sp{-1}$, with 53% being small young of the year. Goldfish were predominantly benthic herbivores with little diet overlap with resident red-spotted newts (Notapthalmus v. viredescens). Thus in relatively simple systems lacking fish predators goldfish can be very successful. However in systems with a complex native fish community, goldfish have had less success in colonizing. Activation of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine (DA) system has been linked to food-rewarded behaviors. For some time, these pathways were thought to mediate the behavioral reinforcing action of rewards. Data from this thesis contribute to an emerging body of evidence in stark opposition to this conventional hypothesis. In vivo voltammetry, with monamine-selective probes, was used to monitor changes in DA transmission in nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) of rats receiving rewards of condensed milk. This electrochemical technique offers the high temporal resolution necessary to characterize, in detail, the fluctuations in mesocorticolimbic DA transmission which parallel food-reinforced behaviors. Roy is a character, a reference and an inspiration; her books and her brilliant green eyes enthral Poulin and his protagonists. She is present through intertextual references---the mention of her name, her books, her characters or her quotes---but also, in a more abstract sense, through influence.
