Centred around English language theatre produced in India after the country attained independence from colonial rule in 1947, this thesis studies queer representation by two Indian playwrights. This dissertation seeks to examine the religious ideas in Mill's writings. Recipient of a unique education, Mill was trained to uphold a reformist ideology, Benthamite Utilitarianism. The secular biases thus instilled were greatly reinforced by his own inductivist outlook in epistemology. But Mill's sensitive mind succumbed to other influences too, especially after his "crisis". Based on a review of these key contextual factors, the ensuing study highlights (1) the persistence of a religious interest throughout Mill's career, (2) the sceptical (yet undogmatic) character of his religious thinking, and (3) the later Mill's drift towards a more sympathetic interpretation of religion. …  Read more

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term sensorimotor disability. A large portion of stroke survivors are impacted by upper limb (UL) hemiparesis which may reduce the range of active elbow extension leading to the use of compensatory shoulder and trunk movements to assist reaching. Bacterial adhesion and subsequent biofilm formation are the common pathogenic events associated with the severity (symptoms) and duration (chronic) of an infection, inferring a heavy socio- economic loss. Several factors including surface charge, surface topography, and physicochemical property play a crucial role in bacterial attachment and its subsequent biofilm formation on any biotic or abiotic surface. Trypanosoma brucei bloodstream forms (BFs) evade the host immune response by switching their variant surface glycoprotein coat (VSG) by a process called antigenic variation. The genome of T. brucei encodes for about 2,500 VSG genes. However, only one is expressed from one out of 20 telomeric expression sites (ES). VSG genes are silent in the procyclic forms (PF) of the parasite which express another surface protein known as procyclins. Efficient joint designs are key to exploit the full potential of composite materials, which are being increasingly used in aircraft structures. Composite structures are traditionally joined by either mechanical fastening or adhesive bonding. Recently there has been a renewed interest in combining both these joining techniques despite the different stiffness of the load paths offered by the adhesive bond and the bolts. Face recognition from 3D shape information has been proposed as a method of biometric identification in recent times. This thesis presents a 3D face recognition system capable of recognizing the identity of an individual from his/her 3D facial scan in any pose across the view-sphere, by suitably comparing it with a set of models stored in a database. Despite the culturally diverse history of psychedelics, dominant cultural assumptions constrain emerging psychedelic healing practices and therapeutic models in contemporary Western biomedical practice. I draw on Kirmayer’s “Psychotherapy and the Cultural Concept of the Person” (2007) to discuss how the emerging model of psychedelic psychotherapy inherits the egocentric cultural concept of self embedded in psychotherapeutic practice. I examine the ways that psychedelic healing practices integrate dominant cultural conceptions of the self in their structure by examining the examples of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy and Santo Daime ayahuasca practices. We aimed to determine whether pre-transplant diabetes increases the risk of fractures among patients receiving solid organ transplantation. Methods. This was followed by the gradual implementation of a communist regime and its attendant atheist ideology in a region where over 80% of the population subscribed to protestantism. This thesis examines the policies of the SED towards the Protestant Church in Eastern Germany and attempts to define the various phases, motives, methods, and principles underlying that religious policy from 1945 to 1953. Echinoid (Ed) is a homophilic cell adhesion molecule previously implicated in the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton during the development of Drosophila melanogaster. In the ovary, borders between populations of follicle cells that express Ed and those that lack Ed are associated with localized contractile actomyosin structures that function in the normal morphogenesis of this epithelium. This study used trapping and visual census surveys to assess whether a marine reserve in Barbados effectively protected coral reef fish stocks and whether there was evidence of emigration from the reserve. Fish abundance and sizes were higher in the reserve than in surrounding non-reserve areas. Relative differences in abundance and size between reserve and non-reserve of different taxa were positively correlated to vulnerability to traps (the most common fishing method) but not to mobility of fish.
