2020 — Exploring Parental Intentions to Engage In A Parent-Administered Internet Cognitive Behavioural Therapy ProgramAbstract
More than 6% of Canadian children experience anxiety at a severity which warrants a diagnosis. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for childhood anxiety but it can be difficult for parents to access due to factors such as cost and geographical obstacles. Parents have successfully and effectively implemented CBT to their children in the past, and we wanted to know if parents were interested in fusing parent-administered CBT with the Internet to overcome accessibility issues. The objective of this study was to investigate parents’ interest in assuming the role of laytherapist in online therapy and the factors associated … Read more

2021 — An Empirical Test of the Relative State Model with Texas Holdem Poker ScenariosAbstract
This study empirically tested predictions from a new evolutionary model of risky decision-making, the relative state model (RSM), using Texas holdem poker scenarios. The RSM suggests that risk taking is a product of one of two interacting pathways—need (desperation) and ability (affordance). According the RSM, decisions are made based on an assessment of one’s relative state, attributable to the interaction of embodied and situational factors within the environment of competition. Embodied factors are inherent physical or psychological capabilities of the decision-maker; situational factors determine how those capabilities compare relative to others in an environment. In the present study, I tested … Read more

2015 — Three-Way Classification ModelsAbstract
In 1982, Pawlak proposed a theory of rough sets for data analysis. A fundamental concept of rough sets is the approximation of a set by a pair of lower and upper approximations or three pair-wise disjoint positive, negative and boundary regions. In 1990, Yao et al. introduced a probabilistic version called decision-theoretic rough sets (DTRS). Motivated by a three-way interpretation of the probabilistic positive, negative and boundary regions, in 2012 Yao proposed a theory of three-way decisions based on the actions of acceptance, rejection and non-commitment. The theory pro- vides a uni ed framework that integrates rough sets, interval sets, … Read more

2014 — BETWEEN LANGUAGES: LA TRADUCTION DE REARVIEW, UNE PIÈCE DE THÉÂTRE FRANSASKOISEAbstract
… Read more

2012 — Effects of Waterflooding, Solvent Injection, and Solvent Convective Dispersion on Vapour Extraction (VAPEX) Heavy Oil RecoveryAbstract
In this study, the detailed effects of waterflooding and solvent injection on vapour extraction (VAPEX) heavy oil recovery are studied by using a visual rectangular sandpacked high-pressure VAPEX physical model with a low permeability. The physical model is sandpacked and then saturated with a heavy oil sample at the connate water saturation. Pure propane and a mixture of n-butane and methane are used as respective solvents to extract two different heavy oils. The waterflooding effect is examined by performing a series of VAPEX tests with the initial waterflooding prior to the subsequent solvent injection. In addition to the visual observation … Read more

2008 — A critical exploration of voluntary sector social policy advocacy with marginalized communities using a population health lens and social justice.Abstract
There appears to be little data on the social policy advocacy work of the voluntary social service sector, also known as community-based organizations (CBOs), in Canada and their role in helping to create healthier communities. Research on this topic is timely in light of the following: shifting expectations of social service CBOs over the past few decades; questions about CBO-government relations; a growing importance of measuring the outcomes/impacts of the social service CBO sector; a need to alter free market ideology and introduce the counterweight of social justice principles to reduce health inequities; a growing interest in holistic policy development; … Read more

2017 — Policy Agenda Setting and Twitter - Three Cases from CanadaAbstract
Social media sites are arenas for online collaboration, political controversy or, at times, mob justice. These sites are also arenas for discussion about policy problems. Dramatic events, amplified by Twitter, create an opportunity for citizens to support solutions to social problems or to hold politicians to account for decisions made or not made. While media portrays such events as transformative and heroic, most policy decisions have a historical pedigree that is invisible to the public. By focussing on three cases of political discussion on Twitter (Idle No More, Copyright, and Cyberbullying), this dissertation measures the extent that policy theory explains … Read more

2015 — “Citizenship and the Emergence of the Antigonish Movement in Maritime Canada”Abstract
Canadians exited World War I with a new hope for their relationship with the state. After four years of government control and intervention in their lives, citizens demanded increased state involvement in their welfare, an expectation that became more pronounced during and following the Great Depression. Coupled with these increased demands on the state, there was a changed notion of citizenship that looked to increased protection by government of the basic social, political and legal rights of all citizens. Those new notions of citizenship and the role of the state helped to shape the Maritime co-operative movement that emerged most … Read more

2016 — "all alongingly the way": Ontology and Longing in bpNichol's The MartyrologyAbstract
bpNichol’s (1944-1988) long poem, The Martyrology (published between 1972 and, posthumously, 1993), is a work that is comprised of text, illustrations, and musical notations. Its sheer length, both in time of composition and page range, as well as its reach, in its thematic inclusion and incorporated written styles, constitute its demanding and comprehensive form. Critics have neglected to examine the poem as a work preoccupied with the philosophy of ontology—the study of being—through a literary mode of longing. Instead, The Martyrology is treated as a work that is substantiated by history and mythology, as opposed to the ubiquitous theme of … Read more

2013 — Colonialism’s Impact upon the Health of Métis Elderly: History, Oppression, Identity and ConsequencesAbstract
In this dissertation I examine colonialism through the theoretical lens of racialized power relations. I consider the identity regulation imposed upon Aboriginal peoples and extrapolate the impact of colonialism on the health of a sample of elderly Métis. Health, care and access to services are vital social indicators in any society. The traumas of colonialism can be measured by the health of colonized people. I focus on the Métis elderly because our elders are the most revered members of Aboriginal society and they have been impacted by colonization the longest. Unlike status Indians, the federal government does not have a … Read more

2018 — Voices of the File Hills Farm ColonyAbstract
A reserve in southern Saskatchewan, Peepeekisis Cree Nation is home to a unique and particular history. A radical agricultural and social experiment by the Canadian government, the File Hills Farm Colony influenced the development of this reserve and altered the demographics of the community. Implemented by Indian Agent William Morris Graham, the Colony was composed of First Nation graduates of Indian Residential and Industrial schools in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The Colony was active between the years of 1897 and 1954, and intended to demonstrate the manner in which Canada’s “Indian Problem” could be solved. However, beneath the surface of this … Read more

2021 — Segmentation of Ultrasound Images Using Deep Neural NetworksAbstract
During brachytherapy sessions, medical specialists record ultrasound images of prostate cancer patients and segment these images manually. In the process of analyzing patient records, it is a fundamental task to localize the catheters (needles) in the recorded ultrasound images. Due to the signi cant amount of noise in ultrasound images, localizing multiple catheter positions in ultrasound images is more challenging than similar image segmentation tasks for MRI and CT images. The manual segmentation process is very time-consuming and relies on experienced clinicians. Hence, a tool for the automatic localization of catheters in ultrasound images is highly desirable. In the medical … Read more

2015 — Stereotypes and Perceptions of Child Witness CredibilityAbstract
Research has examined factors that influence child witness credibility because it has the potential to influence case outcomes. This study investigated beliefs that impact perceptions of child witness credibility in cases of physical abuse. Participants (N = 95) were asked open ended questions inquiring about factors that either contribute to or detract from credibility. Using the responses provided, a check-list was created to assess the strength of the association between the words generated and the categories (i.e., credible and not credible; N = 64). The second part of this study examined whether a training protocol could ameliorate belief activation and … Read more

2017 — Low Power MAC Security Mechanisms for WSNs in a Smart Grid EnvironmentAbstract
Smart Grid cybersecurity is one of the key ingredients for successful and wide scale adaptation of the Smart Grid by utilities and governments around the world. The implementation of the Smart Grid relies mainly on the highly distributed sensing and communication functionalities of its components such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and other protection devices. This distributed nature and the high number of connected devices are the main challenges for implementing cybersecurity in the smart grid. As an example, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) issued the Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards (CIP-002 through CIP-009) … Read more

2017 — Litho- and Biostratigraphic analysis of the Upper Cretaceous Carlile and Niobrara formations in southern Saskatchewan, CanadaAbstract
The Carlile and Niobrara formations were deposited during the regressive phase of the Greenhorn cycle and the transgressive phase of the Niobrara cycle (early Turonian-late Santonian). The lateral distribution of these units was controlled by eustatic sea level changes and differential accommodation space generated by dynamic and flexural subsidence of the Western Interior Basin (WIB). Analyses of these two units and stratigraphic equivalents within the Canadian portion of the WIB have been made mainly in the neighboring provinces of Alberta and Manitoba, but little is known about them in Saskatchewan. To fulfill the litho- and biostratigraphic gap of information in … Read more

2018 — 'This Is How I Know": A Qualitative Study of Parents' Experience and Perception of IntuitionAbstract
Intuition has been a topic of interest and research in many disciplines such as management, business, nursing, psychology, counselling, and parent education/support. However, little has been researched or written that reflects parents’ experience and perception of intuition as a source of knowledge within the parent-child relationship. Through the process of narrative inquiry, this qualitative research study endeavoured to explore the role of intuition within the parent-child relationship as a viable source of knowledge and connection. Building on the premise that parents know their children best, this study explored the experiences and perceptions of intuition through the eyes of parents. The … Read more

2015 — An Evaluation of Some Robust Estimators of Regression CoefficientsAbstract
In the theory of regression analysis, the method of least squares is most commonly used because of its mathematical beauty and computational simplicity. However, this method is now criticized more and more because it often has very poor performance when there are outliers in the data. In this connection a variety of robust statistics are developed for that they are not unduly a ected by outliers. In this thesis comparison studies have been made for several robust statistics to see which performs better than the others. Monte Carlo simulation has been used to carry out the comparison of these statistics, … Read more

2021 — Modeling of Solid Particle Transport in Fractures and Its Applications to Proppant Placement During Hydraulic Fracturing OperationsAbstract
In addition to conventional enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technologies, extensive efforts have been made to explore new approaches to sustain the increasing global oil and gas consumption while lowering the operational costs. In recent decades, nanoparticles (NPs) have seen their promising potentials in recovering hydrocarbons from numerous laboratory experiments and field pilots. Also, hydraulic fracturing techniques have unlocked a significant quantity of hydrocarbon resources from unconventional reservoirs. Solid particle transport including NP transport, dispersion, and distribution in hydrocarbon reservoirs, proppant placement within hydraulic fractures, and sand production is critical to the efficient and effective hydrocarbon exploitation. Considering the petrophysical complexity … Read more

2018 — A Randomized Non-Inferiority Trial of Technician-Guided and Self-Guided Transdiagnostic Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Cancer Survivors: Making Treatment ScalableAbstract
Many cancer survivors face difficulties adjusting to life after cancer; approximately 14-24% of cancer survivors experience clinical problems with anxiety, depression, and/or worry about the future. Depression and anxiety have significant consequences for survivors in terms of distress, quality of life, and physical health. In turn, depression and anxiety result in increased costs to the health care system. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) has demonstrated efficacy treating anxiety and depression in cancer patients and survivors; however, many individuals do not seek mental health treatment for these problems or are not referred to available services. Barriers to receiving treatment include: geographical distance, … Read more

2014 — Linguistic Analysis of Communication in a Therapist- Assisted Internet-Based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Program for Individuals with Generalized Anxiety DisorderAbstract
Background: Therapist-assisted Internet-based Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (TAICBT) is an empirically supported method of treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). In addition to the cognitive and behavioural elements found within face-to-face Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), TAICBT includes elements of expressive writing, through email communication with a therapist. Expressive writing has been associated with positive outcomes; furthermore, certain linguistic dimensions in expressive writing have been associated with psychological and physical health benefits, such as less frequent use of negative emotion words, and greater use of positive emotion words. No research to date has analyzed linguistic dimensions in client communication over the course of … Read more

2018 — Comparing Hobbes's Gratitude and Aristotle's MagnanimityAbstract
Hobbes's natural law of gratitude needs to be brought back into perspective when reading his political works. Often when reading Hobbes, many use his depiction of human nature and natural rights to demonstrate the innate propensity toward unsociability. However, contrary to this presumption, Hobbes presents a collectivist dimension to his argument even within the state of nature. The natural law of gratitude demonstrates the importance of preserving sociability and collectivity. In both On the Citizen and Leviathan, gratitude creates and sustains sociability with utility-based friendships. Gratitude is preserved best in a monarchy, because it secures covenants that rely on gratitude; … Read more

2017 — Modeling and Optimization of Cell Formation Problem Using Progressive Modeling and FactDesignAbstract
Cellular manufacturing is the most efficient manufacturing system design option in the mid-volume/mid-varietymanufacturing environments.Designing a cellular manufacturing system is a complex multi-level process consisting of four interdependent stages: 1) cell formation (CF), 2) inter and intra-cell layout design, 3) work scheduling and 4) resource allocation. In this thesis, our focus will be on cell formation stage, widely known in the literature as the Cell Formation Problem (CFP). In this study, a new comprehensive, user-friendly framework is proposed and developed to address a variety of problem formulations. A CFP could be simply modeled as a simple incidence matrix or as complex … Read more
