2020 — 10,000 Drowned: Commemorating the CaribouAbstract
This exhibition commemorates a caribou herd that drown during their fall migration in 1984. The disaster occurred when Hydro-Quebec opened the Caniapiscau reservoir spill gates two hundred and seventy miles upstream from Limestone Falls on the Caniapiscau River. This caused the river level to rise and send a torrent of water towards the Ungava Bay. At their traditional river crossing, thousands of caribou were swept over the falls and drowned. This paper supports my MFA graduating exhibition, 10,000 Drowned, installed in The Fifth Parallel Gallery from November 25 to December 6, 2019. 10,000 Drowned is an installation of six large … Read more

2020 — Risks Governance of Innovative Power Generation Technologies in Saskatchewan: Pathways to a Sustainable Energy FutureAbstract
Literature on socio-technical transitions acknowledge that negative risk perception is important to socio-technical transitions. However, beyond acknowledging risk as a potential barrier to the deployment of innovative technologies, this study points out that the acceptance or rejection of innovative technologies due to their associated risks can be a predictor of the socio-technical transition pathway that will be followed. This dissertation uses socio-technical transitions in the electric power generation sector of Saskatchewan as a case study. It finds that existing literature in the field of energy systems transitions fail to fully map the relationship between risk analysis and socio-technical transition pathways. … Read more

2016 — Mass Transfer Studies on Catalyst-Aided CO2 Desorption in a Post Combustion CO2 Capture PlantAbstract
Two solid acid catalysts of contrasting characteristics were studied on their effects on the liquid-side mass transfer performance for the desorption of CO2 from CO2-loaded 5M monoethanolamine (MEA) solvent. The characteristics of the catalysts were both physical (surface area of catalyst which increases the interfacial area for mass transfer) and chemical (the catalyst acid sites to catalyze the desorption of CO2). Protonated zeolite socony mobile-5 (HZSM-5) representing a higher Brφnsted/Lewis acid site ratio in a catalyst and γ-Al2O3 representing lower Brφnsted/Lewis acid site ratio were used. The experiments were conducted in a 1.07 m height x 0.051m diameter packed column … Read more

2022 — An efficient Internet of Things (IoT) device fingerprinting approach using machine learningAbstract
Internet of Things (IoT) usage is steadily becoming a way of life. IoT devices have applications in smart homes, factories, and farming. Thousands of IoT devices are hooked up to the cyberspace each day. However, the increased usage of IoT devices comes with many security concerns due to their small and constrained build-up; consequently, perpetrators could target an IoT device as an access point to attack the whole network. Further, the number of IoT device manufacturers keeps expanding by the day, although a high number of these manufacturers have less or little knowledge about IoT security. Therefore, a comprised IoT … Read more

2016 — An Exploration of Leisure Innovation in the Self-Management of Co-Morbidities in Older AdultsAbstract
Leisure has been shown to be relevant in coping with, adjusting to and adapting to negative life events such as chronic illness (Kleiber & Hutchinson, 2010) and therefore, it may play an important role in accomplishing the tasks of self-management. However, disability resulting from chronic illness can limit leisure participation. Innovation theory of successful aging may provide insight into leisure among older adults living with chronic conditions. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of leisure innovation among older adults living with more than one chronic illness. A hermeneutic phenomenological design was used to explore leisure … Read more

2024 — Modeling of birth and death oscillations in provinces of CanadaAbstract
We discuss several statistical properties of the new proposed Log-Logistic Erlang (LLogE) distribution. Additionally we analyse birth, death oscillation of Canadian provinces in depth as well as the correlation between birth and death and those with temperature that has been collected from center of population of each provinces. While the focus of this study is on Canada, temperature may have a global influence on fertility. Even if there is no consensus how seasonality of birth phenomenon modelled, yet environmental factors specifically temperature, plays a role in explaining the seasonality observed in birth in many countries over many years. There are … Read more

2018 — A Love That Points: The Teleologies of Evelyn Waugh and Iris MurdochAbstract
Both Evelyn Waugh and Iris Murdoch use their novels to work out the ways in which metaphysical ends undergird and direct the world of lived experience. In other words, both authors are consistently teleological, though they disagree wildly on what (or who) the ultimate teleological good actually is. I have chosen to examine Waugh’s and Murdoch’s teleologies in light of the nature of love, which functions for both authors as a virtue and as a teleological engine. In my first chapter I treat the relationship between love and sex in Murdoch’s The Black Prince and Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited, considering Murdoch … Read more

2025 — Flue gas pretreatment method for removal of SO2 for solvent-based post-combustion carbon dioxide captureAbstract
There is no doubt that our current best bet to significantly reduce the carbon footprint in the atmosphere while buying us the time to shift from our over-dependence on fossil fuels to greener/cleaner energies is the amine-based post-combustion carbon capture process (PCC). Nevertheless, amidst advances in amine-based PCC technology and its well-known reputation in CO2 capture, flue gas impurities (SO2 and NO2) cause much harm to the capturing efficiency and render the absorbing solvent unable to stand the test of time (degradation). Conventional pretreatment technologies such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Selective Non-catalytic Reduction (SNCR), and Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) … Read more

2020 — Aen Loo Pawatamihk: Inherited and Personal Memories Shared Through Storytelling and Mediated Interactions with More-Than-Human-BeingsAbstract
This critical engagement paper represents the fundamental framework conducted for my MFA thesis project, Aen loo Pawatamihk: Inherited and Personal Memories Shared Through Storytelling and Mediated Interactions with More-Than-Human Beings. My project connects storytelling, photography, video, and audio recordings of personal encounters with animals and the land. Autoethnographic research paves a path for reconciliation as I discover my Métis identity. This qualitative research with more-thanhuman interactions is a creative, cultural, social, and ecological narrative analysis, exploring hidden colonial truths of inherited and personal trauma. Representation of mediated interactions demonstrates personal stories and connections with animals and the land, reflecting on … Read more

2017 — Examining Change in Health Anxiety Symptoms Resulting From Transdiagnostic, Internet-Delivered Cognitive Behaviour Theapy: The Impact of Therapist SupportAbstract
Internet-delivered Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (ICBT) is a relatively new method to improve access to psychological services and is based on the principles of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), a well-established and efficacious treatment option for various mental health concerns. The presence of therapist support is regarded as an important element in ICBT, yet less is known about how much therapist contact is needed; namely, whether optional therapist contact is as effective as weekly communication with a therapist. ICBT programs have historically been disorder-specific in nature, wherein specific information relevant to one disorder is presented; disorder-specific ICBT is efficacious in the treatment … Read more

2016 — Effects of the Intergenreational Residential School Experience and Negative Racial Stereotyping on Ojibwe Speech Patterns in Mid-Northern Ontario AnishnawbekAbstract
The research project The Effects of the Intergenerational Residential School Experience and Negative Racial Stereotyping on Ojibwe Speech Patterns in mid-Northern Ontario Anishnawbek was undertaken in the Sagamok Anishnawbek First Nation area of mid-Northern Ontario. It was anticipated that three groups of participants would participate: 1) speakers who attended residential school and who lost then subsequently regained their fluency; 2) speakers whose parent(s) attended residential school; and 3) speakers who did not attend or who had minimal attendance at residential school and who never lost their fluency. Instead, two groups of self-identified Ojibwe speakers emerged: 1) those who did not … Read more

2013 — Dewatering Behavior of Centrifuged Oil Sand Fine Tailings for Surface DepositionAbstract
Tailings footprint reduction efforts have led to the investigation of several treatment technologies (natural, physical, chemical and physicochemical processes) to improve tailings dewatering. Most of these methods develop slurries with solids content ranging between 50% and 60% (Devenny, 2010). However, this solids content is not enough because the material cannot be readily reclaimed as a soil. The required improvement is achieved through subsequent dewatering in the disposal facility by evaporation that, in turn, is governed by the prevalent climate. Centrifuge technology is being adapted as part of long time management of oil sand fine tailings. The main objective of this … Read more

2017 — English-only instruction: A comparative case-study of a rural and an urban basic school in GhanaAbstract
This study takes a critical look at ‘English-only’ medium of instruction in Ghana. Like many African countries, Ghana has multiple languages. Davis and Agbenyega (2012) estimate that Ghana has approximately 49 spoken languages and dialects. Local languages are used for everyday life in local communities. English is learned in school and spoken mainly in official places. English was used by British administration as the language of government, law, education and the national newspaper (Sey 1973) and remains the sole official language of Ghana today. This study draws on a historical overview of Ghanaian language-in-education policy (from 1961 Education Act to … Read more

2022 — "Chew and pour learning strategy": A co-participant's account in a collaborative narrative research to examine learning challengesAbstract
This collaborative narrative research study explores the experiences of three co-participants who studied at different locations in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The three co-participants include myself, researcher and two of my former junior high school students. I purposively selected my co-participants. The sample comprised of Boateng and Ntim who were students at two of the three respective junior high schools in which I taught. Drawing on two theoretical frameworks, critical-constructivism (Kincheloe, 2005), and language and symbolic power (Bourdieu, 1971; 1990), this study explores stories shared by the co-participants to identify learning challenges and successes over the use of English … Read more

2020 — Étude Descriptive et Comparative du Programme de Français au Nigeria et en SaskatchewanAbstract
Teaching and learning a new language in a culturally and linguistically diversified country can be very challenging, and Nigeria is no exception to this. Although the country has declared French as its second official language in 1996 in an official declaration by the late Head of State Sani Abacha, over two decades later, Nigeria still struggles to have in place a good French language program that favours the production of students who are efficient and confident in their practical knowledge of French language. This study concerns the language in education policy of two communities: Nigeria and Saskatchewan, Canada. More specifically, … Read more

2020 — A Machine Learning Classifiers Approach for Cardiovascular Disease DiagnosisAbstract
This Thesis study investigates the application of Machine Learning in cardiology and the role that ensemble classifiers can play to help diagnose cardiovascular disease. The computing power and technology available to humans has helped in the development of the application of computers in cardiology. With this development comes a redundancy of some data. When there is a large amount of data as input variables, a Machine Learning model performs poorly instead of helping us to make better decisions. In light of the above, this Thesis study investigated how to select the essential variables from among a set of routine clinical … Read more

2023 — "Call him what he is—a cannibal killer": Representations of mental illness in Canadian news and social media through a case study of the Greyhound bus attackAbstract
Using the 2008 Greyhound bus attack in Manitoba, Canada, as a case study, this project explores representations of mental illness in the media. The study analyzes news coverage of the case from 2008 to 2017, public Facebook comments on stories posted via news agencies’ Facebook profiles, and in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, professionals, and subject matter experts. The data were analyzed through a combined and updated theoretical framework of C. Wright Mills’ sociological imagination and Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model of communication, and an interpretivist approach to data analysis using sociological discourse analysis. The findings of this project demonstrated significant gaps … Read more

2013 — Fear Rises from the Dead: A Sociological Analysis of Contemporary Zombie Films as Mirrors of Social FearsAbstract
This thesis explores three contemporary zombie films, 28 Days Later (2002), Land of the Dead (2005), and Zombieland (2009), released between the years 2000 and 2010, and provides a sociological analysis of the fears in the films and their relation to the social fears present in North American society during that time period. What we consume in entertainment is directly related to what we believe, fear, and love in our current social existence. Thus, this paper argues that the rise in popularity of zombie films, and zombies in general, is directly connected to our fears and anxieties as a culture, … Read more
