2023 — Optimizing golf ball detection by applying channel pruning to a YOLOv3-Tiny detectorAbstract
This thesis presents an approach to golf ball detection using a channel pruned YOLOv3- Tiny detector. Object detection is a challenging task, influenced not only by the appearance of objects but also by the surrounding environment. In the case of golf ball detection, the object can vary in size, color, and texture, and may be partially or fully occluded by other objects in the scene. Additionally, environmental factors such as lighting conditions and background clutter can further complicate the task. In addition, the fast motion of the golf ball adds another level of difficulty to the detection process. The proposed … Read more

2019 — Value-Based Connected Autonomous Vehicles Business ModelingAbstract
Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAV) industry is expected to grow rapidly in the upcoming years. Many enterprises will need to adapt new techniques to be able to participate in CAV growth. Although some manufacturers promise high level of automation by 2025, the needed infrastructure investment will take longer time due to the huge investments’ capital and the time needed for constructions. CAV will need to continuously communicate with their surroundings in order to guarantee efficient and safe trips. One of the main communicating methods is Vehicle to Infrastructure, which mainly depends on Roadside Equipment in North America. There’s a need to … Read more

2023 — Optimal pricing and control strategy for electric vehicle charging stationsAbstract
The increasing popularity and number of electric vehicles (EVs) globally have resulted in a growing demand for efficient, affordable and convenient electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) infrastructure. However, the development and implementation of this infrastructure involve various challenges, such as EV battery and charging station parameters, transportation and power system congestion, user satisfaction, and station operators' profitability. This study proposes an optimized pricing and control strategy for EVCSs, considering the integrated operation of the transportation network and the power distribution system. This model offers a competitive pricing strategy that accounts for both competitive and non-competitive charging demand. Additionally, the model … Read more

2013 — Rural Chinese Restaurants: Current Perspectives on Family and Business StructureAbstract
Chinese immigrants have been a presence in Canada since the mid-1800s. Early immigrants faced numerous barriers due to race, limited work skills, and a lack of English-language fluency. Chinese immigrant entrepreneurism in the restaurant industry emerged as response to these barriers. Although current Chinese immigrant restaurant owners possess higher skill levels and more English-language facility, Chinese restaurant entrepreneurship continues. The restaurants allow immigrant entrepreneurs to build relationships in the communities as well as to provide a service. This research presents a current perspective on Chinese immigrant labour in the rural restaurant industry. This study addresses the role of family and … Read more

2014 — Analytical Modeling of Transient Heat Transfer Coupled With Fluid Flow in Heavy Oil Reservoirs During Thermal Recovery ProcessesAbstract
Tremendous resources of heavy oil are located in western Canada. Among the many heavy oil recovery methods proposed, thermal recovery methods which employing hot fluid injection or in-situ combustion, have been conventionally utilized to enhance heavy oil recovery. Temperature profiles in heavy oil reservoirs are important factors for making operation and production plans in thermal recovery processes. A significant factor in these processes is to study the heat energy transfer in the oil formations. In previous studies, heat transfer by conduction has been commonly considered as the main mechanism of heat transfer in porous media. However, this assumption is not … Read more

2023 — Efficacy of an Internet-delivered self-compassion intervention in preventing depressive relapse and recurrence: A randomized controlled trial in a clinical sampleAbstract
Depression is a prevalent and burdensome mental health condition. Unfortunately, depression is chronic and recurrent, with a lifetime average of four to five episodes. Although evidence supports the efficacy of self-compassion interventions for a range of psychological disorders (Ferrari et al., 2019), research on scalable forms of compassion-based interventions for recurrent depression remains scarce. The primary purpose of this two-arm randomized controlled trial (RCT) was to examine the efficacy of a 6-week internet-delivered, self-directed self-compassion intervention in preventing depressive relapse and recurrence over a 12-month period in a clinical sample of adults with a history of depression. The efficacy of … Read more

2018 — Cross-Cultural Examination of the Cognitive Theory of Depression Among Individuals of Chinese and Canadian DescentAbstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) or major depression is a debilitating condition affecting members of all cultures around the world. The cognitive theory of depression is one of the most researched theories of the disorder worldwide; however, the theory’s cross-cultural applicability has not been extensively studied, especially among Chinese participants. According to the cognitive theory of depression, symptoms of major depression are hypothesized to strongly associate with negatively distorted cognitions about the self, world, and future. The present investigation examined five descriptive hypotheses (e.g., negativity hypothesis, exclusivity hypothesis, severity/persistence hypothesis, schema activation hypothesis, and selective processing hypothesis) derived from the cognitive … Read more

2014 — A Suite of Fast and Efficient Cryptographic Mechanisms for Wireless Ultra-Low Power Device NetworksAbstract
Mobile computing technology is reaching every corner of our lives. Smart phones, tablets, laptop computers are just a few examples of the most known applications. Recent advances in the ultra-low power technologies enabled the development of even smaller, more mobile, autonomous devices. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Smart Dust, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) are several examples of this trend and have been applied to a large number of areas and will be more and more popular for various applications. Security is a critical factor to many applications due to the impact on privacy, trust and control, and is also important … Read more

2015 — Analytical Model for Fluid Flow Coupling With Heat Transfer Integrating Heat Conduction and Convection in Radial SystemAbstract
Enormous heavy oil resources has been found in western Canada. But some factors especially high viscosity limit their development. Thermal recovery methods which injecting heat into the reservoir or in-situ combustion, have been widely used to enhance heavy oil recovery. The viscosity of the crude oil has been lowered by raising the temperature of the reservoir, so temperature and pressure profiles are important factors for making operations and development plans in thermal recovery process. Understanding how heat transfer influences the fluids flow is the key knowledge for us to make the right decisions. In this study, a novel heat transfer … Read more

2020 — Analytical Coupling Methodology of Fluid Flow in Porous Media Within Multiphysics Domain in Reservoir Engineering AnalysisAbstract
Fluids flow in porous media are usually affected by multiphysics domains. Thermal, mass transfer, and hydraulic domain will all significantly affect the features of fluids flow in porous media. Thermal fluids coupling problems occur almost in every area of reservoir engineering such as geothermal energy development, and heavy oil recovery. Mass transfer is another important mechanism that should be considered in solvent based heavy oil recovery and unconventional enhance oil recovery methods. This research focuses on using analytical source and sink function method applied in heat transfer and mass transfer to simulate two domain coupling model. Based on thermal source … Read more
