L’ironie du « Pleurer-Rire » chez Henri Lopès

Résumé

En faisant intervenir les théories pragmatiques de l'ironie, l'article interroge les modalités de constitution de l'élément ironique dans le Pleurer-Rire, roman contemporain de l'écrivain congolais Henri Lopès. Il s'agit ici de mettre en évidence le symbolisme discursif de l'ironie dans l'écriture de Lopès, en analysant le rapport du roman à son contexte socio-discursif de production et d'intelligibilité - le " Pleurer-Rire " du roman africain post-colonial - et ses modalités formelles d'intégration de l'élément ironique. Au terme de cette analyse, nous avons pu formuler un certain nombre d'hypothèses quant au symbolisme discursif du recours à l'ironie chez Lopès, hypothèses qui, au demeurant, en appellent non seulement au rapport de l'écrivain au pouvoir politique duquel il participe et qu'il met en écriture, mais encore à son rapport à l'institution littéraire négro-africaine francophone : d'une part, une stratégie défensive qui prend la forme de l'autocensure, d'autre part une stratégie offensive qui tend à relativiser le discours sur les spécificités de la littérature négro-africaine post-coloniale.

Abstract

This article examines the nature and emergence of the ironic element in Henri Lopès's le Pleurer-Rire, by bringing pragmatic theories of irony to bear upon the contemporary Congolese novelist's work. The discursive symbolism of Lopès's irony and the formal modes of its implementation are explored by placing the novel within the socio-discursive context of its production and interpretation as a post-colonial African novel. A number of hypotheses follow from the exercise, illuminating the author's relation, not only to the political power he participates in and reflects upon in his book, but also to French-language Black African literary institution. More particularly, Lopès's irony takes the form, on the one hand, of a defensive strategy of self-censorship, and, on the other, of an offensive strategy that views the specificities of post-colonial Black African literature in a perspective of relativism.
