1952 — Analysis of protein disintegration under proton bombardment.Résumé
Dry bovine serum albumin and bovine haemoglobin have been irradiated with 50 Mev cyclotron protons. The measured dosage rate was 6.1 ± 2.7 x 10^5 rep/second. Irradiation times varied from one to eight minutes. Fragments of gram molecular weight estimated at 1000 were round in sedimentation experiments on serum albumin irradiated with 7.3 x 10^7 rep. These fragments did not absorb at 2920 Å. It was concluded that molecules of serum albumin in which a single primary ionization occurs are broken preferentially at one point to give fragments of this size. Sedimentation experiments on haemoglobin irradiated with dosages of protons … Lire la suite

2004 — The effect of Mycobacterium bovis-BCG infection on longevity and autoimmune disease in MRL//pr mice /Résumé
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a debilitating autoimmune disease affecting 1/1000 Canadians, primarily women of childbearing age. Mycobacterium bovis-BCG, the tuberculosis vaccine, is a potent immunomodulator and has been used to treat other autoimmune diseases. To study the impact of M. bovis-BCG on disease progression in the MRL/ lpr mouse model of lupus, groups of MRL/lpr and background control MRL/+ mice were infected with BCG at 16-18 weeks of age, and their longevity, kidney function and serologic characteristics examined. MRL/lpr mice infected with BCG showed a slight improvement in longevity, and were protected from kidney failure. This was accompanied by … Lire la suite

1949 — The oxidation of mercaptans by potassium persulfate in homogeneous solution.Résumé
[...] The small decrease of the rate of disappearance of potassium persulfate, k1, at high mercaptan concentrations is not explained by this mechanism. If the effect is real, as itappears to be, since the magnitude of the decrease in the rate is approximately twice that considered to be significant, the some other factor must be complicating the reaction at thesehigh mercaptan concentrations. There is the possibility that the presence of large quantities of mercaptan affect the analysis for potassium persulfate. If a constant, absolute amountof potassium persulfate were not found in each analysis, i.e., a larger amount of eerie sulfate … Lire la suite

1960 — Legend and tradition in the novels of Thomas Hardy.Résumé
Thomas Hardy's Wessex novels contain a remarkable amount of Dorsetshire legend and tradition. This material includes countrymen's proverbs, folk-magic, seasonal festivals, and rites descended from primitive religions. Some of the legends are connected with Angle-Saxon and Roman relics -- barrows, roads, burial grounds, fortifications ethers with old country families. Witchcraft and many sorts of superstition become important themes in several of the novels. Lire la suite

Secondary gall production indicated that the bacteria really travelled greater distances in the plant than is indicated by isolations. The migration of the organism is greatly influenced by the transpiration stream. [...] Lire la suite

1998 — Shakespeare and freedom of conscienceRésumé
This thesis studies the human rights philosophy presented during the first productions of Shakespeare's plays, putting it in touch with that reflected in United Nations human rights law and the political theory of John Rawls. Its opening chapter discusses twentieth-century scholarship exemplary of the criticism relevant to human rights ideas in Shakespeare. The sixteenth-century historical context, so emphatically identified by historians with the institution of modern freedom, is kept in sight throughout, and provides, with the cultural context (especially the semantic context), the key to detailed explications, of four plays: King John, Much Ado About Nothing, Hamlet and All's Well …

1964 — Measurements and analysis of meso-scale pressure patterns.Résumé
The simultaneous and continuous recording of two meteorological parameters, atmospheric pressure in a meso-scale network of microbarographs and precipitation by a 3-cm radar, permitted the study of two pressure phenomena (jump line and pressure dome) in relation to precipitation. The jumps were found to be of two basic types, one followed by a pressure dome and associated with severe weather, and the other showing as a step on the barograph traces and not associated with weather. The pressure domes were found to be closely associated with precipitation, some starting with, some developing towards and others intensifying with the radar echoes. … Lire la suite

1907 — The subconscious / Edith M. East.Résumé
The doctrine of "Petites Perceptions" as set forth by Leibnitz about two hundred years ago was the means of opening up a field of investigation, the interest in which has continued to increase until at the present day it is recognized that mental life can no longer be interpreted in terms of consciousness alone, a fact of such supreme psychological significance that Prof. James speaking in this connection says, "I call this the most important step forward because unlike the other advances which Psychology has made this discovery has revealed to us an entirely unsuspected peculiarity in the constitution of … Lire la suite

1955 — Precipitation mechanisms in convective clouds.Résumé
The past decade has seen an increasing interest in the problem of rainfall from convective clouds. It has been stimulated by the recognition that the mechanism must differ fundamentally from that in layer clouds. Bergeron's (1933) theory, with modifications by Findeisen, is the generally accepted mechanism of precipitation from stratiform clouds. He showed that ice particles can grow rapidly in supersaturated water cloud, then melt and fall as rain. This explanation, which has received rumple experimental confirmation, tended to get carried over to precipitation from convective clouds. Lire la suite

1953 — Turbulence in clouds as a factor in precipitationRésumé
Rain and snow are made out of excess water vapour in the atmosphere, but not directly. When conditions are such that the atmosphere can no longer hold all the water it contains as water vapour, clouds appear first, and precipitation may or may not fall out of these clouds. Clouds can remain relatively unchanged for several hours, they may then evaporate without precipitating at all, or precipitation, in small or large quantities, may form after a shorter or longer time. 1960 — Stress corrosion cracking studies in cartridge brass.Résumé
Stress-corrosion cracking is currently defined as the cracking resulting from the combined effect of corrosion and stress (1). Cracks so produced are of a brittle nature and may be intercrystalline or transcrystalline depending upon the alloy and corrosive atmosphere involved. Frequently the amount of corrosion associated with the cracking is extremely small. The types of alloys that may be made to stress corrosion crack are numerous. In fact it seems probable that every alloy will so fail given the correct conditions. It is fortunate that the corrosive atmospheres that cause such cracking are relatively few. Lire la suite

1943 — Studies on lignin progenitors.Résumé
A number of new compounds have been synthesized. They include, among others, eugenol acetate oxide and its chlorhydrin; 1-hydroxyl-( 3,4 dimethoxyphenyl)-propanone-2; 1-(3,4 dimethoxyphenyl)-propanedione-1,2, and probably 3-chlor-1-(4-acetoxy-3 methoxyphenyl)- propanone-2. Several interesting intramolecular rearrangements of aromatic halogenated and hydroxylated ketones of the types, R-CH2-CO-CH2Cl, R-CHOH-CO-CH3 and R-CHBr-CO-CH3 (where R = 3,4 dimethoxyphenyl) have been demonstrated and their bearing on the structure of lignin pointed out. 2008 — Field-scale nutrient transport monitoring and modeling of subsurface and naturally drained agricultural landsRésumé
Eutrophication impacts the quality of many surface waters worldwide. Algal blooms threaten lake water quality and in order to control their growth, understanding of nutrient transport at the field-scale is essential. In order to accomplish this, a combination of field monitoring and computer modeling with the SWAT model was undertaken. Four sites located in the Pike River watershed of southern Quebec were instrumented to monitor nutrient losses from both clay loam and sandy loam soils under both subsurface and naturally drained conditions. Results illustrate how the presence of subsurface drainage influences phosphorus loss depending on soil texture and structure. Total … Lire la suite

2024 — Population coding of natural stimuli in the nucleus praeeminetialis, a feedback center in the electrosensory systemRésumé
This master’s thesis uses multi-unit recordings to analyze population-level neural activity in the nucleus praeeminentialis (nP), a key feedback area in the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish. The study has three main findings. First, noise correlations between neurons have minimal impact on the ability of a linear decoder to reconstruct stimuli from nP neural responses. Second, the research characterizes previously unrecorded neuron types in nP based on firing rates. Third, it reveals new aspects of sensory encoding, including nP multipolar cells’ ability to encode envelopes, discriminate communication signals, and exhibit phase-invariant responses to those signals. Overall, the work elucidates … Lire la suite

1992 — Differential function of costal and crural diaphragm in the awake canineRésumé
These investigations examined the relative function of costal and crural diaphragm segments. This work produced the first direct measurements of length and electromyogram (EMG) of the diaphragm in an awake, intact animal. Examination of diaphragm function following laparotomy revealed a consistent pattern of postoperative segmental recovery, and showed the inadequacy of EMG alone as an indicator of diaphragm activity. Segmental contraction during airway occlusion was confirmed to be non-isometric and different per segment. The basic relation between segmental velocity of shortening and mean inspiratory flow, was confirmed for diaphragm but not for intercostal musculature. Anesthesia produced a distinctive alteration in … Lire la suite

1998 — Morphologic channel response to flood events in a salmon spawning streamRésumé
Changes in channel morphology in response to two flood events were measured within three reaches on the Sainte Marguerite River, Quebec. The first event was the spring freshet---peaking in mid-May, 1996---while the second event---peaking on July 20, 1996---was the largest flood on record for the region. The resultant channel adjustments can be classified as either bedform evolution---in which a clear, systematic pattern of adjustment is evident---or as bedform change, in which local hydraulic and sedimen tologic conditions produce a seemingly random pattern of channel mobilization. Where bedform evolution has occurred, it is consistent with the existing paradigm for meander development. … Lire la suite

1969 — Studies on antideoxyribonucleic acid antibodiesRésumé
This investigation was undertaken to find a method of anti-deoxyribonucleic acid (anti-DNA) antibody measurement more accurate and more direct than complement (C') fixation. Anti-DNA antibodies were produced in rabbits by immunization with complexes of denatured E. coli 0111 B DNA and methylated bovine serum albumin. Dilutions of normal rabbit serum and anti-DNA antiserum up to 1/320 fixed different amounts of C' with denatured DNA. Above this dilution the difference became negligible. Normal rabbit serum enhanced the DNA polymerase-catalysed incorporation of nucleotides into a DNA template, Anti-DNA antisera failed to give statistically significant suppression. Anti-DNA antibodies cou1d be measured by precipitation … Lire la suite

The value of corn as a cereal crop in the warmer portions of North America has long been recognized, but its dependability in the cooler regions of the continent depends to a large extent upon the variety or strain grovm. In localities where temperature is the limiting factor there exists the ever present danger of frost injury to that which is being matured for seed, and the larger part of Canada, outside of a portion of south-western Ontario, is included in this area.[...] Lire la suite

1961 — The development of trade unionism in Jamaica, W. I.Résumé
The account which is presented in this work constitutes, to the best of my knowledge, the first really comprehensive and reasoned history of trade union development in Jamaica. It is hoped, however, that the patient reader will find it much more than a history. Comparative studies suggest that there are certain characteristics (described in Chapter I) which are shared by nascent unionism in developing countries which enjoy at least a modicum of political democracy, notwithstanding the vast differences in their cultural, economic and political backgrounds. The unity amidst the sea of diversity centres around the leadership, ideology, politics and structure … Lire la suite

1961 — The development of trade unionism in Jamaica.Résumé
There has been an upsurge of interest since World War II in the study of economic growth and development, and the literature on the subject is now voluminous as reference to any of the standard bibliographies will show. The change in climate has involved academicians, statesmen and politicians as well as citizens, subjects and electorates. The present over-riding concern with the processes of economic development owes a good deal of its impetus to the Second World War. Lire la suite

The influence of carbon dioxide and low oxygen concentrations on the physiological activities of apple tissue has been studied. It has been shownthat low (6 percent) and high of carbon dioxide (53 percent) concentrations/stimulate and depress respectively the respiratory activity of fruitsduring a period of six days. Low concentrations of oxygen (l percent) increased the output of carbon dioxide of apples; when these fruits werereturned to air the rate of oxygen uptake was found to be lower than in those fruits stored continuously in air. Fruits which had been stored in 5percent and 10 percent carbon dioxide at 3-5 C … Lire la suite

2019 — Pastoral and Pulcinella: respresentations of a 'Commedia dell'Arte' character in the countryside, 1791-1793Résumé
