2018 — Envisioning new futures: Portrait photographs of black Victorians in Montreal, 1861-1901Résumé

1997 — Fractured beings : exploring theories of identity formation, while encouraging social changeRésumé
This thesis explores both modernist and poststructuralist theories of the identification process as a vehicle for understanding the makeup of individuals and their relationship with social movements. It is asserted that individuals are made up of multiple lines of identity, such as sexuality and gender, which interact with societal normative discourse. This essay develops the theory of the fractured being to account for these arrangements and asserts that individuals continually rearrange their identity in order to negotiate axiomatic activities. By demonstrating that it is possible to affect change at micro and macro levels, the fractured being retains agonistic power relations. … Lire la suite

2022 — Designing toxicogenomics to support decision making in environmental toxicologyRésumé

1946 — Production of 2,3-butanediol and the nature of the bacillus soil fermentation.Résumé
2,3-Butanedlol (diol)* has long been known as a product of carbohydrate fermentation, but prior to Pearl Harbour interest in it was purely academic. The loss, to the Japanese, of the principal source of natural rubber created an urgent need for four carbon compounds to be used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber. It was suggested at that time that if diol could be produced in substantial volume it could be used as an intermediate in the production of butadiene. The first investigation was undertaken by the Northern Regional Research Laboratories, United States Department of Agriculture, in 1942, to study the … Lire la suite

1993 — Justifying humanitarian interventionRésumé
The time is ripe for a re-examination of the doctrine of humanitarian intervention, and in particular, of its legal basis in international law. This thesis attempts to draw attention to the significance of the decision to justify humanitarian intervention in a certain way, and to some of the implications of that decision. The thesis compares the two justificatory options which seem to be most appropriate to the multilateralism of the post-Cold War era: collective humanitarian intervention under Chapter VII of the UN Charter and mulitilateral humanitarian intervention under customary international law. It reviews recent state practice, arguing that a mulitilateral … Lire la suite

2020 — Assessing risk factors associated with a positive graded oral challenge (GOC) in children with suspected amoxicillin allergyRésumé

2006 — "To be sold, a Negro wench" : slave ads of the Montreal Gazette, 1785-1805Résumé
The purpose of this thesis is to provide a close textual reading of representations of slavery in The Montreal Gazette, primarily within the period of 1785-1805, the first twenty years after the newspaper became bilingual. This project has three main outcomes. Firstly, it provides a history of black slavery in Montreal details the founding of The Gazette and evaluates its spatial layout, particularly the classified section where slave ads appear. Secondly, it analyzes the representation of black slaves in two distinct news forms: (1) ads of sale and (2) notices of escaped slaves, with particular focus on representations of race, … Lire la suite

2008 — Inhibition of bacterial adhesion to biomaterials by cranberry derived proanthocyanidinsRésumé
Nosocomial, or hospital acquired, infections, are ubiquitous within the modern clinical setting leading to over $5 billion annually of related healthcare costs in North America. All indwelling devices are highly susceptible to bacterial colonization where physico-chemical interactions between bacteria and biomaterial surfaces have been implicated as determinant factors in the fate of the initial adhesion processes. It has been proposed that by exploiting interference strategies within this critical step of infection the ability to create 'non-infective' biomaterials may be developed. This thesis demonstrates the effectivity of North American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) derived proanthocyanidins in preventing the adhesion of pathogenic bacteria … Lire la suite

2025 — The Participation of Local Governments in International Law: Between Theory and Practice. A Necessary Formalization?Résumé

2024 — Towards the Development of a 10-Minute Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging ProtocolRésumé

1975 — Methods of assessing radiographic progression in the pneumoconioses.Résumé
The main aim was to evaluate methods of assessing radiographic progression of pneumoconiosis (lung dust disease) for investigating relationships with dust exposure in individual subjects. It was found that only two methods needed to be compared:- (i) side-by-side reading of all five films in known temporal order; and (ii) independent randomised reading. The standard (ILO U/C 1971) classification was used, except that for method (i) the scales of abnormality were elaborated four-fold. Five chest radiographs, spanning c. 20 Years, for 283 workers in the Quebec chrysotile producing industry were assessed by four film readers of international repute. The new scales … Lire la suite

2013 — International law and the intentional harmful interference with communication satellitesRésumé
During the Arab Spring effected governments in the Middle East Northern Africa sought to jam satellite transmissions from news agencies carrying news and information of the uprisings into their respective territories. The news agencies pushed back and in addition jumping satellites and changing signals, some of these agencies reported that such jamming was a violation of international law. As a result of these claims, the first part of this thesis explores the intentional harmful interfere with transnational radio and satellite broadcasting, those States most impacted by jamming, and the legal justifications that a State may assert in order to jam … Lire la suite

2015 — Degradation of maternal mRNA in oocytesRésumé

2019 — Unitary taxation of multinational enterprises for a just allocation of income: Nigeria as a case study of Africa’s largest economiesRésumé
This thesis makes a case for the tax law treatment of multinational enterprises (MNEs) as unitary firms by Nigeria and other African countries under the recently negotiated African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA). MNEs strategically exploit their legal structures in order to shift their global profits to low or no tax jurisdictions and away from the countries where their real economic activities occur. Treating MNEs as unitary firms has the potential to significantly curtail these tax avoidance practices. Doing so is particularly important for African countries because they are more dependent on corporate income tax revenues for their national budgetary … Lire la suite

2002 — Gene expression is differentially regulated in the epididymis after orchidectomyRésumé
The epididymis is the site for the transport, maturation and storage of spermatozoa. It is well established that epididymal structure and function are dependent on the testis for circulating androgens and factors in luminal fluid. Using cDNA microarrays, our objective is to characterize the expression of genes that are regulated over the first week post-orchidectomy in the epididymis of the adult Brown Norway rat. We describe four patterns of gene expression that are simultaneously activated in the epididymis after orchidectomy. We identify potential androgen-dependent genes including glutathione S-transferases and calcium-binding proteins, as well as potential androgen-repressed genes such as glutathione … Lire la suite

1995 — Tango : the trace analysis generatorRésumé
This thesis describes the development of an automatic generator of backtracking protocol trace analysis tools for single-module specifications written in the formal description language, Estelle. The generated tool automatically checks the validity of any execution trace against the given specification. The approach taken was to modify an Estelle-to-C++ compiler. Discussion about nondeterministic specifications, multiple observation points, and on-line trace analysis follow. Trace analyzers for the protocols LAPD and TP0 have been tested and performance results are evaluated. Issues in the analysis of partial traces are discussed. Lire la suite

2006 — Extraction and segmentation of MRI brain imagesRésumé
Brain image segmentation is an active research in computer image analysis. The challenge lies in the fact that the brain anatomy is not identical for all normal subjects let alone subjects with abnormal tissue. In this thesis, we explain the research we have implemented to extract the brain from T1-weighted MRI images, and then segment the brain into the three prominent compartments (i.e. the cerebellum and the two hemispheres of the cerebrum). The brain extraction is implemented using morphological operations after thresholding. The brain segmentation, however, is implemented in two separate steps. The first step segments the two hemispheres by … Lire la suite

1995 — Fast image segmentation using stereo visionRésumé
Binocular stereopsis is a biologically motivated approach that uses two slightly different views of a scene to extract information about its three-dimensional properties. The two underlying principles of our approach to stereo vision are local computation of binocular disparities and the use of the resulting disparity map for image segmentation. The cepstrum is used to provide an estimation of binocular disparity between corresponding regions of the stereo image pair. We study the cepstrum and its properties, and suggest improvements to the initial disparity estimation stage. Next a modified median filtering scheme is employed for the refinement of the initial disparities … Lire la suite
