Soil heterogeneity is probably the greatest obstacle in the way of the correct interpratation of experimental data. Whether the experiment deal with the testing of varieties, of fertilizers or of rotations, soil heterogeneity is always a confusing factor. Of those experimental fields which have been investigated, practically all were found to be sufficiently non uniform as to affect seriously the tests conducted on them.
