It is a well known fact that culture media, when sterilized by autoclaving, undergo certain changes which affect their original constitution. Attention is here drawn to the abundance of precipitated substances, the changes in hydrogen ion concentration, the hydrolysis of carbohydrates, and the formation of caramel in heat-sterilized culture solutions. The catalytic effect of heat in making these rapid alterations, and possibly others also which have so far evaded observation, proves to be a disadvantage in physiological studies which call for an exact knowledge of the chemical constitution of the media employed. Since sulpbur and oxygen are very similar elements, especially as regards the compoundsthey form, it appeared that the changes taking place daring the sulphurization process would be analogous to those in the oxidation process, and quite recently (1) this was shown to be the case. The experimental facts of the stark-effect in hydrogen and helium are quite well known. In 1913 J. stark discovered that the spectral lines emitted by a gas were broadened, and in some cases were actually split if the gas was subjected to a high electric field. This effect, named after its discoverer, has been examined in great detail by many later workers.Stark and his collaborators used a modified canal-ray tube in which the electric field was produced between the usual perforated cathode and an auxiliary oathode placed a few millimetres away. With the advent of the nineteenth century, a new era dawned in the progress of analytic geometry. The appearance of Poncelet's, "Traite des proprietes project ives des figures", in 1822, really initiated modern geometry. Mobius, five years later, in his "Barycentrische Caleul", introduced homogeneous co-ordinates, which greatly facilitated the discussion of descriptive geometrical properties. The outstanding contributor to analytic plane geometry in this significant period, however, was Johann Pliicker (1801-68), and we may regard him as the true founder of the modern theory of algebraic curves.
