1932 — The cellophane industry in Canada and its relations to allied and inter-related industries.
    Résumé

A perusal of this thesis reveals meagre references to printed material and a very scanty bibliography. The absence of this information is not due in any way to lack of research work on the part of the writer, but arises primarily from the newness of the cellophane industry. The comparatively recent establishment of the industry largely accounts for the lack of literature dealing with it. Furthermore, a large number of patents originally covering the process of manufacturing cellophane has expired, thereby exposing the DuPont cellophane company in the United states and the cellophane subsidiary of Canadian Industries Limited in Canada …  Lire la suite

1932 — The microbiology of air-dried cultivated soils.
    Résumé

The beneficial effect of the drying of soils upon their fertility has been a recognised fact in agricultural practice for many centuries. Russell, (16., p.p. 343-344), points out that this effect has been brought about, either by the exposure of the soil to the baking heat of the sun -- as in India and in Egypt, (Prescott (15) ), or by deliberate burning ofthe soil. The increasing interest in soil science within recent years has stimulated investigation of this phenomenon from various viewpoints: evidence has accumulated to show that the beneficial effects of drying are due to changes in both …  Lire la suite

1932 — Hormonal studies of the placenta and theanterior lobe of the pituitary body.
    Résumé

Investigations have been made in the McGill Biochemical Laboratory during the last three years on the endocrine functions of the ovary, placenta and anterior lobe of the pituitary, with the hope of bringing to light some of the relations that exist between them. Some of the results have already been published (29)(30)(39)(40)(41)(42) (43)(44) but much work is still in progress. As the work of this thesis has been largely confined to the anterior hypophysis and placenta, they alone will be discussed in detail and the ovary only in so far as it is related to these organs. The literature of …  Lire la suite

1932 — Generation and reception of ultra short radio waves.
    Résumé

The communication of intelligence between remote points on the earth's surface without the aid of connecting wires was developed from a fantastic dream in the minds of visionarytheorists and optimistic experimentalists into a practicable working possibility in the closing five years of the nineteenth century. Credit for the final developments madeat that time must go to Marconi, but his work was the culmination of a long series of investigations carried out by Clerk-Maxwell, Preece, He~.tz, Branly, Lodge, Tesla, Popoff, Righi, and many others, all of whom were responsible for theoretical or experimental advances wh'ich brought one step closer the goal …  Lire la suite

1932 — The Preparation and physical properties of aliphatic acetylenes.
    Résumé

The work to be described in this thesis deals with the preparation and investigation of the physical properties of the lower members of an homologous series namely the alkyl acetylenes. In view of the fact that small differences in properties would be observed in the case of isomeric substances and also that the validity of the observations in the case of certain properties depends solely on the purity of the compound investigated new details have been developed in connection with the methods of preparation and special care devoted to the purification of the compounds. 1932 — The relation between particle size and light absorption by suspended particles.
    Résumé

The use of light as a means of measuring the physical properties of various systems has numerous advantages. Perhaps the greatest of these is the fact that it is not necessary to alter the system under investigation in order to determine the property desired. Thus in experiments involving such phenomena as the flocculation of colloids and the rate of formation of precipitates, optical measurements give a rapid means of determining the extent of the reaction without the necessity of arresting its course. The use of various types of apparatus based on the principle that the intensity of light transmitted, or …  Lire la suite

1932 — The value of planning in the establishment of large industrial enterprises.
    Résumé

The development of modern business gradually has resulted in the substitution of method in operations in place of haphazard chance, and has rewarded richly those corporations and small businesses which have followed some well coordinated scheme to reach their objectives. The value of planning is admitted generally, but the scope of its possible employment and the details of its operation seldom are recognized. Proper planning of all operations is regarded as an excellent theory by the average individual in business, but he is either ignorant of the fact or not willing to reoognize that planning can be applied to his …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

A survey of the methods used in agricultural experimentation reveals a tendency toward a more accurate procedure, for the reduction of experimental error and improvement of field technique. With cereals and forage crop tests, some marked progress has already been made in experimental procedure. At experimental stations and agricultural colleges more accuratemethods of testing have been employed and more care has been exercised in mechanical operations. In order to reduce soil error, changes have been made in the size and arrangement of plots as well as the number of replications. The periods of testing have been lengthened in order to …  Lire la suite

Imperial Preference in matters of trade is by no means an invention of the 1ater nineteenth century. Theory of e1asticity treats of the analysis of stresses set up in a body, subjected to external forces. It leads us to differential equations which have :Jeen solved only in a few simple cases. For calculating stresses set up in structures the Theory of Strength of Materials has been developed from pure Elasticity, by making certain assumptions and approximations. It leads us to solutions, which, although not exact, are accurate enough for engineering purposes. [...]  Lire la suite

Its chief feature may be said to be the conductivity of organic peracids. In order, however, to provide the correct setting of this work it is necessary to review at somelength all those previous studies which have a direct bearing on the subject. 1932 — The biology of Podisus Serieventris.
    Résumé

An epidemic of the black-headed budworm, Peronea Variana Fern., in the balsam-spruce forests of southern Cape Breton was reported to the Dominion Entomological Branch in July, 1929. A survey of the infested territory showed that severe and widespread defoliation of the new foliage of mature balsam fir (1) and white spruce (2) had occurred. Biological studies of Peronea Variana in Cape Breton were carried on during 1930 by Mr. R. E. Balch, entomologist-in-charge, Dominion Entomological Laboratory, Fredericton, N. More arbitrary and traditional in England Patent Theatres' Act, 1843, confirmed the censorship'under the Lord Chamberlain, assisted by a permanent Examiner of Plays Select Committees, 1866 and 1909, reported on censorship. The early history of scientific description of the salivary gland is obscure. No doubt the intensive use of mercurial medicines and the consequent salivation induced had early directed the attention of the anatomist toward these glands in regard to their anatomy and relationships in gross. The landmarks of eponymic terminology record only the duct of Wharton (1610 - 73) - the submaxillary duct, the duct of Stenson (1638 - 1686) - the parotid duct, and the nerve of Jacobson (1783 - 1843). The term spruce saw-fly as applied to the species is not a satisfactory one, it having been previously applied to another speoies, Diprion (Lophyrus) abietis, of the same family (Swaine '13 and 115). It would seem, however, that this practice of preserving their quasi-historical and religious teachings in their memories, and passing them on by word of mouth, was a result of their wish to incur as little as possible the displeasure of the government-supported orthodox church, by providing investigators with little or no documentary evidence upon which to secure a conviction of heresy. The field of social custom was opened up with a study of the most obvious element of society, the upper classes. It is found from this study, that there is no absolute definition, but that true satire must contain humour, at least the semblance of a purpose and good literary form.
