1934 — Certain histo-physiological aspects of gland secretion.Résumé
A study was made of the effects of stimulation, and of section on cells of the eat's submaxillary gland. Sympathetic and adrenalin stimulation caused discharge activity in demilune cells. Parasympathetic stimulation acted similarly on alveolar cells but not on demilunes. Both types of stimulation caused changes in striated ducts but the implicationa are not clear. A true augmented secretion was demonstrated. Histological results showed it to be mainly an increased sympathetic-demilune activity. Section of chorda tympani caused marked changes in striated ducts; alveolar cells were largely inactive; demilunes were in continued activity. Section of cervical sympathetic and extirpation of superior … Lire la suite

1934 — Pierre Loti et la Turquie.Résumé
This thesis presents a brief review of the cbildhood, early manhood and character of Pierre Loti before visiting Turkey. The five visits of Loti to Turkey are discussed, particularly in their relationship to the influence they have on the character and mental outlook of the man. Loti's impressions of Turkey, its people, their social customs and their religion are compared with those of contemporary writers on Turkey. Finally, the description of the Turkish women and her life in the harem as depicted in "Les Desenchantees", is considered, and the question discussed as to whether it is truly representative of the … Lire la suite

1934 — Transportation as a national problem.Résumé
The writer points out the profound influence which the railways, as "equalisers of opportunity," have had in creating and maintaining the existing economic structure of Canada and how the recent development of competition from motor transport and in lesser degree, air transport, threatens to make it impossible for them to continue this function, with serious consequences to the economic life of the nation. After a discussion of the vexed question of motor vehicle taxation and of the various means which might be taken to meet the growing competition from motor transport, it is concluded that the rationalisation of railway services … Lire la suite

1934 — The kinetics of the oxidation of gaseous propionaldehyde.Résumé
The kinetics of the oxidation of gaseous propionaldehyde have been investigated from 120 to 170°C by a static method. The reaction is a chain process and is similar to the oxidation of acetaldehyde. The rate is proportional to the square of the aldehyde concentration, and independent of that of oxygen. The apparent heat of activation is 15,400 calories per gram molecule. The following mechanism is suggested for the oxidation of aldehydep {...] Lire la suite

1934 — Aqueous solution ; third year scholarship essayRésumé
The power of water is so varied and extensive in its applications that its study is of singular iinterest. Water is responsible for the formation of many existing geological structures; in the realms of engineering and locomotioin it is one of the chief resources of power; although it is very widely recognized in its connection with steam, nevertheless, steam's modern competitor, electricity is also primarily developed from thsi same source. This serves ito illustrate how widely distributed are the powers of water. [...] Lire la suite

1934 — Hexendones.Résumé
Tetraphenylcyclopentadienone can be used as one of the components in the diene synthesis. Products are described resulting from the addition of maleic anhydride, maleic, fumaric, and acetylene dicarboxylic esters, and benzoyl phenylacetylene. In some instances the primary addition products containing a carbonyl bridge (hexendones) could be isolated. Tetraphenylbenzene derivatives result from secondary reactions. Neither benzalacetophenone, dibenzoylethylene nor diphenylketene added to tetraphenylcyclopentadlenone. [...] Lire la suite

1934 — Pyrrhotite in rocks and mineral deposits. --.Résumé
Although pyrrhotite is a mineral of common occurrence in nature its distribution has never been systematically investigated. This thesis represents the first attack on the problem. The polished surfaces of some 174 rock specimens were examined and the opaque minerals identified. Pyrrhotite was found to occur in basic igneous rocks and in metamorphic rocks. The results indicate that it occurs more commonly in rocks which contain nepheline. Pyrrhotite is most common in rocks of the Monteregian province. As pyrrhotite was found in only 14 of the 174 sections examined it would seem that this mineral does not occur as commonly … Lire la suite

1934 — The development of physical education for women at McGill University.Résumé
Physical Education for women in colleges, both in Canada and the United States, seems to have passed through three stages. It was first introduced to combat physical defects as a result of study. The Calendars of McGill (1907-8 etc) make frequent mention of exercises "to counteract bad and harmful positions assumed during study hours." The second stageconsiders this subject as a prevention for these defects, while the third stage though not discarding the first two ideals, recognizes social, mental and moral values also arising through Physical Education. Nary Lyon, the founder of Mount Holyoke College recognized these values as early … Lire la suite

1934 — Cyclic acetal formation, the Hibbert-Michael partition principle, and its relation to polysaccharide chemistry.Résumé
Propionaldehyde, isobutyraldehyde, trimethylacetaldehyde, and dibromacetaldehyde have been condensed with glycerol, the isomeric five and six membered glycerol acetals isolated in each case, and their structure and physical properties determined and compared with those of related compounds. The ratio in which the two isomers are formed from the different aldehydes has been carefully determined in each case and shown to depend to a marked degree, on the polarity of the aldehyde in question. The ease of glycerol cyclic acetal formation {total mixed glycerol acetal formation) is shown to decrease, with increase in the negative polarity of the aldehyde group, while the … Lire la suite

1934 — The structure of beech-wood lignin : an investigation into the isolation of lignin by the direct acetylation of beech-wood meal.Résumé
The direct acetylation of a prepared beechwood meal has been carried out with a view to the separation of an acetylated lignin. The maximum solution by acetylation uas 76.7% of the lignin present in beech-wood. A separation of the acetylated lignin in high yield by preferential solvent extraction was not obtained. The soluble acetylated product was subjected to methylation followed by hydrolysis and a lignin fraction separated. The maximurn yield was 24.7% of the lignin present in beech-wood. The hydrolysed product was partially solublein dioxane. The dioxane soluble fraction was separated into an ether soluble and ether insoluble fraction. [...] Lire la suite

1934 — The effect of partial tracheal occlusion on thecompensatory hypertrophy of autotransplants and remnants of the thyroid gland.Résumé
Experiments have been carried out in guinea pigs to demonstrate that hyperplasia of the thyroid gland and reversion to the colloid phase could be induced by subtotal extirpation ofthe thyroid gland and partial tracheostenosis. This reversion was observed in the thyroid remnants of the neck; also, in another series of experiments, reversion to the colloid phase took place in the neck remnants and autotransplants. It was concluded that the changes so produced must be due to a bloodborne factor. A "cyclic hypothesis" of thyroidphysiology was presented, in which it was stated that the body requirements for thyroxin, the thyreotropic hormone … Lire la suite
