1939 — Transition phenomena in the critical region.
    Résumé

Interest in the critical temperature phenomena was stimulated in this laboratory some ten years ago when Maass and Sutherland (60), in an investigation of the influence of molecular forces and orientation upon reaction velocity, made an interesting observation. They found that the velocity coefficient of the reaction between propylene and hydrogen chloride in the liquid state increased with rise in temperature but suddenly dropped off to zero at the critical temperature of the mixture. This was the fillip of a number of investigations on various phases of the critical temperature phenomena, of which the present is one. [...]  Lire la suite

1939 — The external anatomy of the four-lined leaf bug.
    Résumé

The scope of this thesis is restricted to the external anatomy of the adult of the four-1ined 1eaf bug, Poeci1ocapsus 1ineatus Fab. (1798). The writer had a taxonomic interest in the Miridae, and selected this species for a morpholog1ca1 study because it is a large and well-known form, and may be considered typical of the family. Its heavy sclerotization and relative lack of pigmentation render it particularly suitable for such a study. [...]  Lire la suite

1939 — Studies on the toxicity of nicotine in combination with various adjuvants.
    Résumé

Any material used in combination with nicotine to produce a more effective kill than would be otherwise obtained by using nicotine alone, may be termed an adjuvant of the nicotine. The adjuvant may or may not have toxic qualities in itself, depending on such factors as the species of insect concerned and the meteorological conditions at the time of application. The effect which an adjuvant has upon nicotine may be due to either physical or chemical factors but more probably to a combination of both. Physically, the adjuvant may bring about more effective spreading and sticking, with greater ability to …  Lire la suite

1939 — An investigation of the transition region of liquid to gas in the systems ethylene and ethylene-air mixtures.
    Résumé

One of the most interesting problems of the physical sciences has been the investigation of the changes of form and properties which occur when matter passes from one state of aggregation to another. Of these transitions, no the least fascinating is that from liquid to gas. For well over a hundred years, the nature and mechanism of the changes which a liquid undergoes as its temperature is raised, have been the subject of much experimentation and contemplation. Even now the problem is still a controversial one. There are two distinct schools of thought, "both presenting good evidence in support of …  Lire la suite

    1939 — Cyclotron ion sources.
    Résumé

One of the principal items entering into the operation of the cyclotron is the ion source: - central source supplying an adequate current of protons, deuterons or helium ions. In first developing the cyclotron, Lawrence chose to ionize the gas by electron bombardment which method is used in the majority of cyclotrons now in existence. A flat spiral filament one-half inch in diameter was mounted in the centre of the cyclotron chamber directly above the diametral gap in the dees and kept at 1000 volts negative with respect to its water cooled shield and the walls. The gas to be …  Lire la suite

    1939 — Reactions of tetrahydrolinalool.
    Résumé

Considerable work has been done on the halogenation of optically active secondary carbinols. Pickard and Kenyon have prepared a number of optically active secondary halides trom the corresponding carbinols. They used hydrogen halides as the halogenating agents and in every case tested the conversion was found to be accompanied by a change in sign of rotation. They produced evidence that a Walden inversion was associated with this change of sign of rotation. They also believed that no racemization had occurred. In a later paper they reported the regeneration of an optically active secondary carbinol trom the halide by hydrolysis. [...]  Lire la suite

1939 — A revision of the American species of Gonia Meigen (Diptera: Tachinidae) together with a study of the male genetalia in calyptrate Diptera based on the same genus.
    Résumé

The tachinid genus, Gonia Meigen, has long been known to contain several distinct American species. Descriptions of at least nineteen of these have been published. Determinations have been based on many different characters, of which those of the male genitalia have been favoured recently. It is, however, admittedly difficult, if not almost impossible, to describe in words slight differences in the shape or contour of such structures. Yet in no case has one of these characters been illustrated. [...] To this end the present work was undertaken. An attempt has been made to clear up the taxonomy of the group, …  Lire la suite

The photosynthesis of carbohydrates by the chloroplasts of green plants is an important process, and one that has received considerable study. Most of these studies have been concerned with the effect of external factors, such as light, temperature, and carbon dioxide concentration on the rate of photosynthesis by the plant. These studies have yielded valuable information, but the actual mechanism of photosynthesis is yet unknown; a new line of attack is necessary before the chemioal changes involved in the photosynthesis of carbohydrates by the whole plant can be elucidated because these changes are complicated by other processes, such as respiration, …  Lire la suite

    Résumé

Twenty-seven fertilizer treatments with celery were set out in duplicate on muck soil on 1/57.6 acre plots. The yields were recorded by weight, and analysed by the analysis of variance. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potash all gave very significant increases over the nil treatment. Doubling the phosphorus and potash in the basic treatment resulted in further increments in yield. Celery was grown in quartz sand in the greenhouse and nutrients approximating the fertilizers used in the field were applied as nutrient solutions. The effect of nitrogen, phosphorus and potash on the growth of tops and roots and on the number of …  Lire la suite

The arrangements are such that the lags occurring after a change in temperature in the critical region can be followed, and their effect as an error in the heat capacity measurement eliminated.
