1956 — A study of the effect of physical, botanical and chemical characteristics of the nutritional value of western Canadian oats.Résumé
The value of oats as an animal feed has been recognized for many years. Its position in our livestock feeding program is shown by the fact that among the cereal grains grown in Canada, oats production is exceeded only by that of wheat. During the crop year of 1951 production amounted to 488 million bushels and during the same period approximately 372 million bushels were used as animal feed. Oats holds a unique position in the Canadian livestock feeding program that cannot be filled by any other grain. Lire la suite

1956 — A study of tryptophan metabolism in man.Résumé
Tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids required by the mammalian body for protein anabolism. In recent years increasing interest has arisen in its intermediary metabolism. This is evidenced by the mass of literature which has appeared describing various aspects of its degradation. A number of pathways of tryptophan breakdown have been described and partially clarified, but only a portion of the total tryptophan intake by the mammalian body can be accounted for by the excretion of its known metabolites. Numerous studies have been made on variations in the urinary excretion of individual metabolites or on the appearance in … Lire la suite

1956 — The settlement of the Victoria region, British Columbia.Résumé
Between Victoria and the mainland coasts of British Columbia and Washington State lie the Straits of Georgia and Juan de Fuca. These two arms of the Pacific Ocean occupying structural depressions in the cordilleran system, the one a portion of the Pacific Coast downfold and the other transversing the direction of this strike and of uncertain origin, sever the Vancouver range from its neighbours causing it to rise as an island. 1956 — The development of education in Jamaica.Résumé
As in most other systems, the development of education in Jamaica appears to have occurred without benefit of plan. In its present state it is an inadequate and amorphous conglomerate developing from the contributions of endorsements, government grants, voluntary agencies chiefly religious, and private enterprise, the latter initiated for commercial rather than educational purposes. Educational facilities range from the youthful University College of the West Indies, inaugurated after years of investigation, study and careful planning, to the dame-school type of school where the alphabet and multiplication tables from the entire curriculum. 1956 — Inverse Segregation in Aluminum-Copper Alloys.Résumé
Segregation which occurs in slowly cooled castings and in the direction indicated by the equilibrium diagram is called "normal segregation". The first crystals to separate from the molten alloy during solidification are rich in the higher melting point alloy and occupy a position close to the mold face. As the solidification proceeds the growing dendrites push before them the residual liquid which is becoming continually enriched in the lower melting point alloy (usually the alloy of high solute concentration). 1956 — Serological Investigation of the Corynebacteria.Résumé
At present there is neither a general scheme nor are there even well defined criteria which may be followed in placing an organism within the genus corynebacterium. Morphological and physiological studies to date have not provided a satisfactory solution. The literature is indicative of extensive serological investigations but is, on the whole, concerned with the type species C. diphtheriae. [...] Lire la suite
