1958 — Patterns of living of elderly people in Montreal.Résumé
This study is an enquiry into the manner of living of a group of non-institutionalized old people residing in an urban setting. The present introductory chapter is divided into three sections. Section A is a general orientation to the present study. Section B considers the theoretical background to the current trends of research in the field of old age. In Section C, the scope and method of the present study will be described. In recent years an increasing attention has been directed to the phenomenon of an ageing population and to the implications which this has for the individual and … Lire la suite

1958 — The role of chronic encephalitis in the pathogenesis of epilepsy.Résumé
This paper presents histopathological evidence that chronic encephalitis may play a pathogenetic role in some cases of focal cerebral seizures. Correlation of the pathological findings with the clinical picture in such cases demonstrates a fairly constant interrelationship. Furthermore, the clinical data, including the history, physical findings, electroencephalographic and radiological studies, laboratory findings, psychological test data, findings at surgery, and follow-up information, suggest a unique clinical syndrome. 1958 — Teachers’ views on the problem of mental health in the schools.Résumé
In modern democratic societies the right of the individual to develop his capacities to the fullest for his own happiness and for the benefit of society is of fundamental importance. One of society's major tools in furthering this ideal has been free and ''universal11 elementary education. Formal education has traditionally concerned itself with the intellectual aspects of a child’s development. “Emotional education” has remained the function of the family. A modern child has the opportunity to learn ideas foreign to his parents, but his emotional life is often restricted by his parents' limited emotional capacities. Society now has a valuable … Lire la suite

1958 — Three-body forces in hypernuclei.Résumé
An investigation is made to ascertain the relative importance of three and two-body /\-nucleon potentials which have the same order of coupling constant. The three-body potential, which is derived using perturbation theory from a pseudoscalar interaction, is found to be weakly singular and hence much smaller than the two-body potential. ln addition, the largest terms are non-central. In the hypertriton where correlations are large, it is found that three-body forces are repulsive for S states and may amount to 4%. D state admixture tends to make the three-body force less repulsive. Lire la suite

1958 — Price and income effects of international capital movements : Canadian case.Résumé
"The so-called unfavourable balance may mean glorious things for a nation." Since a current account deficit and a net capital inflow are merely opposite sides of the same coin, there can be little doubt that the unfavourable balance, which Canada often has with the rest of the world, has been, in general, a great boon to the Canadian economy. 1958 — A study of the hemicellulose of milkweed floss (Asclepias syriaca, L.).Résumé
Seed-hairs are fibers located on the seeds of various plants, designed by nature to make it possible for the seeds to spread by the wind. One of these seed fibers, cotton, is exceptional in its high content of cellulose and has attained an importance far exceeding that of any other material of its kind. Other sources include kapok, tree cotton, cat-tail floss, milkweed floss and cotton grass. Kapok is a seed fiber, cultivated in the East Indies and is commonly used for upholstery and lifebelts. None of the others have shown much commercial importance. Lire la suite

1958 — Some aspects of atmosphere-earth energy relationships.Résumé
All geological processes taking place at the surface of the earth are either influenced or caused by the energy relations between the sun, the surface of the earth, and the atmosphere. Since the surface and atmosphere, unlike the sun, cannot be divorced from the effects of surface geological processes, it follows that these processes, in turn, affect the energy relations between the earth and atmosphere. In short, there is a relationship between geological and atmospheric phenomena which is of utmost importance in both geology and paleoclimatology. Lire la suite

1958 — Adaptations to adoptive parenthood.Résumé
This project studied the parental self-picture of adopters, processes of adjustment to adoption, assessment of adjustment, and adopters’ attitudes regarding racially mixed adoptions. The adopters had been unable to procreate their families, and in this respect were different from natural parents. Some adopters might be conscious of this difference, while others might- feel that the adoptive family approximates the natural. These feelings of “sameness” or “difference” were thought to affect the adopters’ adaptability to adoption. Lire la suite

1958 — Dispersion in humus and moss, of zinc, copper, nickel and lead, from a glaciated Precambrian terrain.Résumé
This thesis is based on research into the nature and controls on the geochemical patterns resulting from the dispersion in humus and moss, of zinc, nickel, copper and lead from Precambrien rocks. The results have justified certain conclusions which the writer believes will be of practical use to the rapidly expanding science of applied geochemistry. The dispersion patterns studied are the result of weathering and dispersion in mineral soils and ground water, of primary minerals, either related to zones of sulphide mineralization or occurring in trace amounts in unmineralized rock. The metals forming these secondary dispersion patterns have entered the … Lire la suite

1958 — A comparison of embryo sacs and haustoria in selected species of Impatiens.Résumé
The object of this problem was to study the ovule development of selected species of Impatiens. Special emphasis was placed on the occurrence, origin, and nature of the haustoria in these species. The genus, Impatiens, is of embryological interest for two reasons. The conflicting statements concerning the types of embryo sacs in certain of the species must be reconciled (Maheshwari, 1955). The synergid, embryo sac and endosperm haustoria present interesting research material which may aid in the clarification of this family’s phylogenetic position. Lire la suite

1958 — The communist conquest of power in Yugoslavia 1941-1945.Résumé
The Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY) was formed in 1919 through a fusion of various socialist parties and non-organized radical elements in the territory of the new Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later known as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. This unification took place under the impact of the Bolshevik Revolution. It was achieved through peremptory acceptance of a platform which advocated “repudiation of the traitorous policies of the Second International, refusal to participate in the Coalition Government and abstention from the work of the Interim National Assembly”. 1958 — Two-level representation of the atmosphere.Résumé
This paper discusses the adequacy of representing the constant pressure surfaces in the atmosphere by considering only two levels, 1000 mb and 500 mb. The equations of motion and the thermodynamic equation are reviewed, together with the formulation of the Sawyer-Bushby and Godson two-level models. The height data for eight standard pressure levels from 1000 mb to 100 mb for January 1956 were used to determine linear correlation among the various levels. The multiple regression equations, so determined, were tested against independent data in 1958. It is found that the two levels account for most of the contour height variance … Lire la suite

1958 — Corrosion Behaviour of Welded Low Alloy Steel.Résumé
One of many corrosion problems confronting engineers is the failure of metal structures caused by specific corrosive attack at welds. Such attack is especially dangerous when more rapid than the normal corrosion rate of the material, and usually occurs in the following forms: (a) Specific attack of weld metal; (b) Specific attack of parent metal adjacent to a weld deposit; (c) Intergranular corrosion of weld or parent metal in stainless steel due to "sensitization". 1958 — Factors Affecting the Binding and Synthesis of Acetylcholine.Résumé
Feldberg and Schilf (18) have given the name 'Gewebshormone' to pharmacologically active substances which are formed unspecifically by a number of organs and whose normal metabolic action seems to be a local one although they are capable of acting on organs some distance from their site of formation. Acetylcholine and histamine are two such substances. Lire la suite

1958 — The Stratigraphy and Palaeontology of the Beekmantown Group in the St. Lawrence Lowlands, Quebec.Résumé
In southern Quebec the Lower Ordovician or Beekmantown series consists of a thick sequence of dolomite beds with minor amounts of sandstone, limestone and shale. By comparison with Lower Ordovician strata elsewhere, the Beekmantown in southern Quebec is relatively unfossiliferous. As a result, interest in the group has been slight. This study is a dissertation on the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Beekmantown group as exposed in the Quebec portion of the St. Lawrence Lowlands. Lire la suite

1958 — Studies of Radioactive Krypton of Low Mass.Résumé
This thesis deals with (1) technical developments whereby excellent spot and line sources of radioactive krypton were produced for spectrometers and (2) the discovery of an isomeric state in Kr76 m. This isomer decays with a half-life of 15.5 hours predominantly by electron capture to Br76 and is followed by a strong Ml gamma ray of 45.6 kev in energy. Indeed the conversion lines for six gamma rays were observed to decay with the 15.5 hour half-life. An isomeric transition in Kr76 was not definitely recognized among the many weak conversion lines. 1958 — Investigation of the Response of Electromechanical Servomechanisms in Combined Linear and Nonlinear Operation.Résumé
The work described in this thesis comprises the first in a series of projects dealing with servomechanisms at the Department of Electrical Engineering of McGill University. The particular problem investigated was the control of a servomechanism with one nonlinearity, the saturation of the driving element. As a result of the work a twofold purpose was fulfilled. An insight was gained into the problem of utilizing nonlinear control to optimise the transient response, and test equipment and procedures were developed to facilitate complete testing of all aspects of servomechanisms. In 1947 a mould was found growing as a contaminant on a Lowenstein's slope which had been inoculated with sputum for the isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Investigation of the mould showed that it produced, in addition to an antibiotic probably identical with penicillin, a substance capable of neutralizing various bacterial exotoxins (Diena, 1954, 1956; Murray, Denton, Stevenson, and Diena, 1958). The toxin neutralizing substance, now known as noxiversin, was shown to possess, in addition to its antitoxic properties, some activity against influenza virus (Diena, 1956). Lire la suite

1958 — Studies of a New Thermionic Cathode.Résumé
A new thermionic cathode has been made which has many of the characteristics of the E-cathode made by Dr. Ekkers of the Brown-Boveri Co. In contrast to the oxide-cathode, the new cathode has a firmly bound supply of emitting material near the metal surface; it has a relatively high emission and stands exposure to air. The cathode is made by passing an arc in an atmosphere of argon to a preheated oxide-cathode. The discharge destroys the oxide coating and leaves a thin gold-yellowish layer full of very small craters. Lire la suite

1958 — Studies in Pulmonary Diffusion.Résumé
In the past decade pulmonary function tests have assumed an increasingly important and useful role in the field of diagnostic medicine. Many such tests have been devised, but if we consider the lung as ultimately concerned with the exchange of gas between atmosphere and blood, the measurement which perhaps best estimates this process is the pulmonary diffusing capacity. Although the test was conceived early in the century, in the past few years there has been a sudden spurt in its development. [...] Lire la suite

1958 — Chaucer's Use of Dress.Résumé
We may, of course, understand a great deal of Chaucer at first sight; but we shall never comprehend the full Chaucer but by studying those minutiae which are matters of history to us, but which were present everyday commonplaces to the people for whom he wrote. Few minutiae become "matters of history" more quickly than fashions and caprices in dress. We laugh at the styles of twenty-five years ago, consider our grandmother's clothing quaint and the garments of two generations ago romantically beautiful. Fashions which have special significance in their day are quickly changed and forgotten. [...] Lire la suite

1958 — Latency and Amplitude of Response and the GSR.Résumé
In 1943, Hull (8) proposed a theoretical model of learning phenomena, which he labeled "the primary laws of molar behavior." The four dependent variables in his model were latency and amplitude of response, probability of reaction evocation, and number of unreinforced responses to extinction; these are related to a number of "major symbolic constructs" or intervening variables (e.g. habit strength, reaction potential), and to various antecedent events and manipulable conditions (e.g., reinforcement, deprivation). 1958 — Isolation of Carbohydrates from Periodic Acid-Schiff Reactive Sites.Résumé
The science of histochemistry is of primary importance in understanding natural phenomena, for it is a science which permits the visualization of the chemistry of a cell component in relation to the cell itself, to the organ of which the cell is a part, and often to the body as a whole. The histochemist is therefore often able to understand the intimate relationships of biological systems better than the chemist or biochemist who is involved with the study of isolated systems. The frequency variation of various nuclear interactions under lead has been studied by comparing the number of different kinds of stars produced in Ilford G5 emulsion exposed directly to the air, and under 15.1cm and 10.lcm of lead. From these observations the attenuation lengths in lead are found to be: 320 +/- 12g. per cm^2 for all stars; 274 +/- 27g. per cm^2 for stars with charged primaries; 200 +/- 35g. per cm^2 for stars with uncharged primaries, excluding simple evaporation stars. The size-frequency distribution of stars and its relation to the composition of the emulsion is discussed. Lire la suite
